Morisot, Berthe (b. Jan. 14, 1841, Bourges, Fr.d. March 2, 1895, Paris)
French painter and printmaker. The first woman to join the circle of the French impressionist painters, she exhibited in all but one of their shows, and, despite the protests of friends and family, continued to participate in their struggle for recognition. Born into a family of wealth and culture, Morisot received the conventional lessons in drawing and painting. She went firmly against convention, however, in choosing to take these pursuits seriously and make them her life's work. Having studied for a time under Camille Corot, she later began her long friendship with Edouard Manet , who became her brother-in-law in 1874 and was the most important single influence on the development of her style. Unlike most of the other impressionists, who were then intensely engaged in optical experiments with color, Morisot and Manet agreed on a more conservative approach, confining their use of color to a naturalistic framework. Morisot, however, did encourage Manet to adopt the impressionists' high-keyed palette and to abandon the use of black. Her own carefully composed, brightly hued canvases are often studies of women, either out-of-doors or in domestic settings. Morisot and American artist Mary Cassatt are generally considered the most important women painters of the later 19th century.

Add to Wish List More about this title Back to top of page The French nineteenth-century painter Berthe Morisot (1841-95) was held by her contemporaries to be the 'quintessential Impressionist'. She was an influential member of the Impressionist group, whose exhibitions she organized with her fellow artists Monet, Renoir, Pissarro and Degas. A landmark tome in this field, this book considers Morisot's work in the context of the artistic and social milieu of the time. It explores the meaning of Baudelaire's famous dictum - to paint 'the heroism of modern life' - for a woman artist painting in the changing city of Paris: a very different city from the Paris of her male colleagues.

Berthe Morisot
Birth Year : 1841 Death Year : 1895 Country : France Berthe Morisot was the only French woman of note among the Impressionists. She was born in Bourges, and her father was an important government official, and although both she and her sister studied art, nothing in her early upbringing suggested that she might choose art as a serious career, for the very idea was quite alien to well-bred women in the nineteenth century. Dissatisfied with the instruction she received from her first art professor, and having gained as much as she could from the second, Morisot finally received permission to work under Corot . She remained with the master from 1862 to 1868, showing such ability that she was allowed to sign her works, "pupil of

BERTHE MORISOT EXHIBITION
From the 20th of june to the 19th of november 2002
Every day between 9 a.m. and 19 p.m.
Berthe Morisot is no stranger to Martigny. During the Manet retrospective held at the Foundation in 1996, the famous painting "Berthe Morisot au bouquet de violettes", in Manet's admirable black hues, had already introduced the public to the intense and passionate gaze of this young artist, whose strong personality the painter had managed to convey with his brush.
THE IMPRESSIONIST WOMEN
The hardships, the cold, the constant roar of the bombings affected her health and she never completely recovered from all these privations. The Morisot family took refuge in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Berthe dreamt of the sea breeze, the inactivity weighed on her and she left to join her sister in Cherbourg.

Berthe Morisot retrospective - Report from Europe - Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille, France - Brief Article
Magazine Antiques March, 2002 by Miriam Kramer Berthe Morisot was born in Bourges France, in 1841 into an upper middle-class family directly related to Jean Honore Fragonard. She and her sister Edma were encouraged to draw and paint, and among their teachers was Jean Baptiste Camille Corot: In late 1867 or 1868 Berthe Morisot met Edouard Manet, whom she introduced to plein-air painting. In 1874 she married Manet's brother Eugene. The following year she visited Britain where she studied J. M. W Turner's technique and painted several sea views. The first impressionist exhibition was held in 1874, and Monsot exhibited at all of them with the exception of the one held in 1879. The last of these exhibitions, which she organized, took place in 1886.

  • Jun 12, 2006: simple update to post the link to the transcription of the December 1907 article on Berthe Morisot in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts
  • Nov 17-27, 2006: I regret that I do not yet have time to update the web page fully. This page is intended to provide web links to the paintings that are mentioned in Dominique Bona's book "Berthe Morisot: La Secret de la Femme en Noir", published by Bernard Grasset, Paris, 2000. (The quotation above is from page 248.) The links are given in order of appearance within each chapter. (Click here for a photo of Berthe Morisot. She was born Berthe Marie Pauline Morisot 14 Jan 1841 and died of pneumonia 3 Mar 1895. The best collection of her paintings in a museum that I have seen is at the Musée Marmottan in Paris.) NOTE: I am NOT trying to compile an exhaustive list of every place on the web where each painting is. I give multiple references for some paintings, in case links go dead or because some of them have useful text with them.
