Berthe Pauline Morisot (1841-1895)
Morisot was born in Bourges, France. After moving to Paris with her family, the young girl and her sister received their first instruction in drawing and painting. She took some lessons from Corot. While copying in the Louvre, she met Manet who was also making copies of the pictures there. She became influenced by his technique. Manet used Morisot as a model for some of his pictures. She appears in The Balcony and a number of later works. Berthe married Manet's brother, Eugene.
Morisot worked out an individual style: characteristic of her work are its very light touch and great intimacy of atmosphere (see The Cradle). Her technique, based on large touches of paint applied freely in every direction, give her works a transparent, iridescent quality. She worked both in oil and in watercolor, producing mainly landscapes and scenes of women and children, as in Madame Pontillon Seated on the Grass.
Morisot took part in the innovations of the Impressionists from the beginning and she remained faithful up to the last group exhibition in 1886. She died in Paris in 1895.

18 x 29 5/8 in. © The National Gallery, London, England Subject Style Intrigued by the play of light on her subjects, Morisot painted the swans, the reflections in the lake, and the ladies themselves in the quick, zigzag brushstrokes for which she’s known. In typical Impressionist style, the composition is off center, with the blue-coated woman partially cropped by the edge of the scene. Yet notice how similar brush- strokes throughout the painting pull it together. This sketchy texture captures Morisot’s open-air "impression" of the moment, though art critics of the time often mistook her loose style for sloppiness. "Why, with her talent, does she not take the trouble to finish?" complained one early reviewer. But other critics raved about Morisot’s pearly, soft color harmonies. "She grinds flower petals onto her palette," gushed one writer, "so as to spread them later on her canvas...." Artist Berthe Morisot struggled to be taken as seriously as male counterparts of the time. Reared in a conservative, cultured family, she received the art lessons given all young ladies of her class. She was excluded, as a woman, from nude life-drawing classes, but her ability emerged in paintings of the outdoors and domestic scenes. She married the brother of her mentor, Èdouard Manet, and exhibited in all but one Impressionist show. During her lifetime, Morisot’s canvases often fetched slightly higher prices than those of her male colleagues, but she remained modest. She had merely wanted to capture "something of what goes by...the smallest thing," she wrote in later life. "An attitude of Julie’s (her daughter), a smile, a flower, a fruit, the branch of a tree, any of these things alone would be enough for me."

The Speed Art Museum will host an extraordinary exhibition of Impressionist works from the collection of Berthe Morisot from the Musée Marmottan-Monet in Paris, June 7 through September 18, 2005.  Berthe Morisot: An Impressionist and Her Circle will feature paintings, watercolors and drawings by Morisot herself as well as paintings from her art collection, including paintings by Degas, Manet, Renoir, and Monet. This is the first time this collection from the Musée Marmottan-Monet has traveled to the United States. Along with Mary Cassatt, Morisot was the most well-known and successful female Impressionist painter and one of the most important woman artists of the nineteenth century. She was the first woman to join the artistic circle of the Impressionists, and she exhibited her paintings of intimate domestic interiors, portraits, garden scenes, landscapes, and coastal scenes in all but one of the Impressionist exhibitions of the 1870s and 1880s. Morisot’s paintings of modern Parisian life were highly influenced by her brother-in-law, Edouard Manet, yet Morisot’s work is distinct in its spontaneity and in its brighter, more vivid palette. In fact, it was Morisot who persuaded Manet to lighten his palette. Selected photographs and documents from the Morisot archives at the Musée Marmottan-Monet in Paris will be included in the exhibition.

    Morisot, Berthe
Morisot, Berthe key , French impressionist painter. She studied with many gifted painters, including Corot . She formed a close friendship with Manet , who became her brother-in-law, and she served as model for several of his best-known paintings. The two greatly influenced each other's artistic development. Her own later work inclined toward pure impressionism in its rendering of light, while retaining an unusual smoothness of brushwork. Her paintings formed an important addition to all but one impressionist exhibit from 1874 through 1885. Her most notable works, including Young Woman at the Dance (1880; Paris) and La Toilette (Art Inst., Chicago), are painted in clear, luminous colors. Her early subject matter included landscapes and marine scenes; later she most frequently painted tranquil portraits of mothers and children. Morisot's works have been particularly popular in the United States, and many important works are in American collections. See catalog (ed. by D. Rouart, 1960); her correspondence (ed. by D. Rouart; tr., 2d ed. 1959).
