23. Artist Profile: Berthe Morisot, French Impressionist Painter, 19th Century
berthe morisot, French Impressionist Painter Artist Profiile of Her Life and Work.
http://www.ndoylefineart.com/morisot.html
@import url(http://www.homestead.com/~media/elements/Text/font_styles.css); Artist Profile: Berthe Morisot
When I saw more of her work, I was blown away, not only by the amazing quality of her painting, but also because I had been painting many years without knowing that my work was so much like hers. I had admired the Impressionists for so long, and studied their work; but her work held a special place for me. She painted at times in a very loose manner, almost anticipating the gestural painting of the 20th century - much looser, more painterly, than Monet, Renoir or Cezanne - big, bold, almost slashing, strokes, of bright and rich color. Her work also has a very delicate quality, a tenderness, like a tiny, clear bell.
She was born in France in 1841, into a family of a high social class. She and her sister, Edma, were reared with the requisite social and feminine-skill education - needlepoint, drawing, etc., intended to make them more suited to a life of cultivated domesticity (marriage). However, Berthe and Edma took their drawing seriously, much to their mother's dismay. Edma continued her art-making until she was married. Berthe did not marry young, and continued her artwork throughout her life.
She eventually married Edouard Manet's brother, Eugene, an amateur painter. They had a child, Julie. Morisot continued to paint seriously, which she tried to downplay in the presence of her social peers, as it was considered very unusual and a social no-no for a woman to have a serious profession, particularly one so "questionable" as artist.

About the Artist Born January 14, 1841, in Bourges, France, Berthe Morisot was the third daughter of a prominent and wealthy government official. The family moved to Paris in 1852, where her father served as the Judicial Adviser to the Auditor's Office. This powerful position, with its high salary and important political associations, allowed the Morisots to lead a privileged lifestyle as members of the upper middle class. Berthe Morisot

France/Giraudon/Bridgeman Art Library Raised accordingly, Morisot and her sisters were provided tutors for languages and literature and, in 1857, art lessons. Morisot and her older sister Edma quickly developed both a passion and a high level of skill in drawing and painting. Alongside her sister, Morisot copied masterpieces at the Louvre and painted out of doors under the direction of well-known landscape painter Camille Corot. She first exhibited her paintings at the prestigious annual Salon in 1864, and her work was shown there regularly through 1873. top

ARTIST INDEX GO BACK Morisot, Berthe The first woman to join the circle of the French impressionist painters, Berthe Morisot, b. Jan. 14, 1841, d. Mar. 2, 1895, exhibited in all but one of their shows. Born into a family of wealth and culture, Morisot received the conventional lessons in drawing and painting. She went firmly against convention, however, in choosing to take these pursuits seriously and make them her life's work. Having studied for a time under Camille Corot, she later began her long friendship with Edouard Manet , who became her brother-in-law in 1874 and was the most important single influence on the development of her style. Unlike most of the other impressionists, who were then intensely engaged in optical experiments with color, Morisot and Manet agreed on a more conservative approach, confining their use of color to a naturalistic framework. Morisot, however, did encourage Manet to adopt the impressionists' high-keyed palette and to abandon the use of black. Her own carefully composed, brightly hued canvases are often studies of women, either out-of-doors or in domestic settings. Morisot and American artist Mary Cassatt are generally considered the most important women painters of the later 19th century.

    Berthe Morisot
Painter in oil, watercolor, pastel (landscapes, portraits, interior scenes), some sculpture and printmaking. She studied in Paris under G.A. Chocarne, J.A. Guichard, Corot, A.F. Oudinot and Aime Millet.
She married Eugene Manet and was sister in law of Edouard Manet, also his model. She and Mary Cassatt were the only women among the exhibitors and founding members of the French impressionists. Morisot exhibited with the impressionists regularly except for one year, her only child was born.
Mallarme, Degas, Monet, and Renoir (whom she named guardian of her daughter) were close friends. She was of poor health and constantly questioning her talent, yet she received better auction prices than many of her colleagues

With great skill, Higonnet sets Morisot's story against the backdrop of 19th-century art and politics."Christine Temin, The Boston Globe "[Anne Higonnet] has written Morisot's biography with a scrupulous honesty that resists temptations of impertinent interpretation. Drawing on previously unpublished journals and letters, Ms. Higonnet delineates the facts of Morisot's life as if with an incisive etching tool; her cool, logical pen makes a contrast to the supple brush with which Morisot caught transient light. . . . Friday, February 4, 2005; Page WE31 THE FEATURED exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts may not be the ideal introduction to its principal subject, 19th-century French painter Berthe Morisot, but it is true to its title. "Berthe Morisot: An Impressionist and Her Circle" places the artist in her demimonde, which in retrospect is a golden one.

Near the beginning of the show which, like previous displays in this space, is oriented inexplicably toward the elevators, not the grand staircase is an assured picture of a woman painter. It's not a self-portrait, but a depiction of Paule Gobillard, a Morisot artistic cohort who happened to be her niece. Elsewhere are paintings of Julie Manet, Morisot's daughter, who not only grew up to be an artist but also married one, Ernest Rouart. Then there's a striking portrait of Morisot by Edouard Manet, one of the leading impressionists as well as Morisot's brother-in-law. For this crew, blood was almost thicker than oil paint.

      Morisot, Berthe
Morisot, Berthe key , French impressionist painter. She studied with many gifted painters, including Corot . She formed a close friendship with Manet , who became her brother-in-law, and she served as model for several of his best-known paintings. The two greatly influenced each other's artistic development. Her own later work inclined toward pure impressionism in its rendering of light, while retaining an unusual smoothness of brushwork. Her paintings formed an important addition to all but one impressionist exhibit from 1874 through 1885. Her most notable works, including Young Woman at the Dance (1880; Paris) and

Portrait of Berthe Morisot, c. 1869-76. Oil on canvas, 73.6 x 58.34 cm. Leonard C. Hanna, Jr., Collection, 1958.34 Although Manet refused to exhibit with the impressionists, choosing instead to gain acceptance through the Salon , he shared some of their artistic goals, such as the desire to capture a fleeting moment on the canvas without losing any of its liveliness. Manet's distinct brush strokes and exposed ground contribute to an impression of spontaneous realism, and this painting appears unfinished compared to those of the more conservative painters of his time. His innovative techniquessuch as painting on a white ground instead of the traditional red-ochreinfluenced the impressionists. He was interested in portraying contemporary life and understanding how the eye sees light and color. Manet's knowledge and admiration of the work of past masters and his friendship with the younger generation of artists made him a bridge between traditional academic artists and the impressionists. Berthe Morisot - An Interview with Kathleen Adler
This title is no longer available from the Roland Collection. Details remain on this site for the reference of previous customers. Kathleen Adler, author of a book on Morisot, is interviewed by Bryony Fer. Ms Adler describes the restrictions suffered by a woman artist in Paris in the 1860s and 1870s - Morisot was restricted as to the places she could go and therefore what she might paint. Her subject matter was life in the middle-class suburb of Passy in which she lived. Her special interest in the suburban world informs her painting View of Paris from the Trocadero, which can be seen as representing the relationship between suburb and center. Morisot's technique was close to that of the other Impressionists, but her subject matter is of special interest to us now.
