Under him she began working plein air (e.g. Artist's Sister and Mother, 1870, Washington DC, National Gallery) and was introduced to the Impressionist circle in Paris. Home Virtual Museum Individual Artists : Berthe Morisot Berthe Morisot: 1841 - 1895 Daughter of a high-ranking civil servant, Morisot was given painting lessons by Joseph-Benoit Guichard, then was influenced by Daubigny and Guillemet. In 1868 she met Edouard Manet , whom she greatly admired, but soon developed a distinctive style that influenced his own painting and encouraged him to work en plein air. Morisot exhibited regularly at the Salon, and at all the Impressionist exhibitions except for 1879. She appears in many of Edouard Manet's paintings, such as The Balcony and Repose . After her marriage to his brother Eugene in 1874, her house in the rue Villejust became a social and inspirational center for the Impressionists. Berthe Morisot was a grand-daughter of the painter Fragonard and the sister-in-law of Manet , but her interest in painting was not the result of this connection. Early in her career she appeared in the Salon, but she foreswore Salon exhibition as a declaration of faith in the impressionist cause. This faith was enduring; she continued to paint impressionistically after Renoir and others had abandoned the cause. She did more than her share of hard work involved in organizing and maintaining an association of frequently difficult temperaments. Her sister Edma also painted for a while, but quit to become a wife and mother. Berthe successfully combined matrimony, motherhood, and a career.

    Birth Year : 1841
Death Year : 1895 Country : France Berthe Morisot was the only French woman of note among the Impressionists. She was born in Bourges, and her father was an important government official, and although both she and her sister studied art, nothing in her early upbringing suggested that she might choose art as a serious career, for the very idea was quite alien to well-bred women in the nineteenth century. Dissatisfied with the instruction she received from her first art professor, and having gained as much as she could from the second, Morisot finally received permission to work under Corot . She remained with the master from 1862 to 1868, showing such ability that she was allowed to sign her works, "pupil of Corot ," and until 1874, her open compositions and treatment of nature continued to show Corot 's influence.

    Biography:

Berthe Morisot was the grandniece of Fragonard. As the daughter of a prominent civil servant, she was able to receive art lessons from Corot. Morisot received good reviews at an exhibition in 1864 in which she displayed two of her landscapes. In 1868, she met Manet with whom she learned and contributed to the development of the Impressionist movement. Her scenes of quiet, everyday rural life were displayed in almost all of the Impressionist exhibitions, which was a large feat for a woman artist at that time. Morisot married Manet’s brother, Eugene, in 1874.

Eventually this circle was to be known as the Impressionists As one of the only women in the Impressionist group, Berthe Morisot found herself drawing special attention from contemporary critics including one critic who dismissed the Impressionists as "five or six lunatics, including one woman" both for her gender and for her deft brushwork. A close friend of Manet and Renoir, she introduced them to the drypoint technique. With the renewal of interest in the women of the Impressioist group, Morisot's critical reputation has risen substantially, and one sign of that hass been a number of recent books and museum shows dedicated to her work and to her role as the organizer of the various Impressionist exhibitions during her lifetime. As the first two works below indicate, she also symbolizes the closeness of the Impressionists: She was Manet's sister-in-law and a close friend of Renoir, who not only made the portrait of her below but also several prints devoted to her daughter, Julie Manet, who is depicted in three versions of

    Berthe Morisot
Impressionism was one of the most revolutionary movements of painting in the 19th century. Morisot along with Mary Cassatt helped form the core of this group. She used light color and loose undisguised brush strokes. Morisot met Manet in 1868 and posed for him many times. She even married his younger brother, Eugene. Despite receiving negative reviews about her style of painting and little commercial success, her unwavering dedication helped make Impressionism what it is today.
    Critics on Morisot
I think one of the best works is the woman at her dressing table, seen from behind,
whose ambered white skin is seen against a background almost as light.
Armand Silvestre, La Vie Moderne, 24 April 1880
The same impossibilities, the same seduction [exist] in the Femme a sa Toilette. She is an ashblonde with a lost profile. The entirety is in gray tones spotted here and there with touches of pale pink.
Paul Mantz, Le Temps, 14 April 1880 Berthe Morisot is French in her distinction, elegance, gaiety and nonchalance. She loves painting that is joyous and lively. She grinds flower petals onto her palette, in order to spread them later on her canvas with airy, witty touches, thrown down a little haphazardly. These harmonize, blend, and finish by producing something vital, fine, and charming that you do not see so much as intuit. . . . Here are some young women rocking in a boat on choppy water; there are some picking flowers; this one walks through a winter landscape; that one is at her dressing table. All are seen through fine gray tones, matte white, and light pink, with no shadows, set off with little multi-colored daubs, the whole giving the impression of vague and undecided opaline tints.

Back to Impressionism Berthe Morisot (1841-1895), French Impressionist painter. She was the daughter of a top civil servant in the Department of Cher and a grand-niece of the Rococo painter Fragonard. She started to take lessons in drawing in 1857. Berthe Morisot was a tireless copyist. She began with the Old Masters and ended with Corot, whose work she had the advantage of discussing with the artist himself. In 1860-1862 she was a pupil of Corot together with her sister Edna (later Mme Pontillon). Corot advised her to go to Auvers-sur-Oise and learn to paint plein-air. Influenced by Camille Corot and Édouard Manet, she gave up her early classical training to pursue an individualistic Impressionistic style that became distinctive for its delicacy and subtlety. In 1874 she married Eugene Manet, the brother of Edouard Manet. Among her closest friends and admirers was the French poet Stéphane Mallarmé, whom she met in her brother-in-law's (Edouard Manet) house.

    Morisot, Berthe (b. Jan. 14, 1841, Bourges, Fr.d. March 2, 1895, Paris)
French painter and printmaker. The first woman to join the circle of the French impressionist painters, she exhibited in all but one of their shows, and, despite the protests of friends and family, continued to participate in their struggle for recognition. Born into a family of wealth and culture, Morisot received the conventional lessons in drawing and painting. She went firmly against convention, however, in choosing to take these pursuits seriously and make them her life's work. Having studied for a time under Camille Corot, she later began her long friendship with Edouard Manet , who became her brother-in-law in 1874 and was the most important single influence on the development of her style. Unlike most of the other impressionists, who were then intensely engaged in optical experiments with color, Morisot and Manet agreed on a more conservative approach, confining their use of color to a naturalistic framework. Morisot, however, did encourage Manet to adopt the impressionists' high-keyed palette and to abandon the use of black. Her own carefully composed, brightly hued canvases are often studies of women, either out-of-doors or in domestic settings. Morisot and American artist Mary Cassatt are generally considered the most important women painters of the later 19th century.
