Human History of Yellowstone Objective
Students will identify Thomas Moran as an artist who accompanied the Hayden Survey of 1871, and recognize the importance of his watercolor sketches in the creation of Yellowstone as the country's first national park. Method
Students will study Moran's watercolors on the Influence of Art in Yellowstone Electronic Field Trip and discuss their importance in the history of Yellowstone National Park. Students will then capture their own scenes through painting with watercolors. Background
Moran's watercolors portray Yellowstone's remarkable scenery and grandeur, although at times even Moran was daunted by its sheer beauty. It is said that, when he first gazed upon the canyon now known as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, he remarked that its beautiful colors "were beyond the reach of human art." Nonetheless he proceeded to record what he saw with his watercolors, just as Jackson recorded what he saw with his camera.

54. Phoenix Art Museum - Thomas Moran: Zoroaster Temple At Sunset
thomas moran painted this view of the Grand Canyon in 1916.
Western American Collection
Thomas Moran painted this view of the Grand Canyon in 1916. The peak in the center is Zoroaster Temple, one of the canyon’s best-known rock formations. Notice how dark shades in the foreground move to paler shades in the background, creating an astonishing sense of depth. There is a thumbprint in the paint in the lower right corner. This was the artist’s own, his mark of authenticity. Moran once told why he painted the Grand Canyon so many times:
"Its tremendous architecture fills one with wonder and admiration, and its color, forms and atmosphere are so ravishingly beautiful that, however well traveled one may be, a new world is opened to him when he gazes into the Grand Canyon of Arizona."

"Water, Carry Me"
(Reviewed by Karma Sawka FEB 21 2002) "On calm nights, when the soft wash of the sea on the shingle of our bay seemed like the whispers of a dream, my grandda told me stories of the ocean's dead. I was little and never doubted the answers to the questions I asked. We lived at the far side of Cobh, seaward from the quay and the lofty dun cathedral that loomed above it, close to where the water met the shore. Cobh is at the head of Cork Harbor. A dark place, Cobh." Medical student Una Moss has lived with her grandda, Rawney, in the South of Ireland since her mother and father were killed in a car accident when she was a young girl. Una sometimes senses that things in her family are not what they seem, and gradually learns generations of political secrets from which she has been sheltered all her life.

The exhibition comprises 81 works on paper spanning the years 1856 through 1900. Also included is the oil painting, Vera Cruz (1885). The exhibition is drawn in its entirety from the Gilcrease Museum, which, since purchasing the contents of the artist’s studio from his daughter, Ruth Moran, in the late 1940s, has been the largest repository of works by Moran in the world. Guest curators Donna Gustafson, chief curator of exhibitions at the AFA, and Anne Morand, curator of art at the Gilcrease Museum, arranged the works chronologically, charting the artist’s many journeys throughout the United States, Europe, and Mexico, and demonstrating his wide-ranging interests. While celebrated as one of the finest chroniclers of the American West, Moran strove to incorporate his personal experience of landscape into his paintings, relying on drawings he created in the field to capture the essence of any given scene. As Gustafson writes in her essay accompanying the exhibition, The Poetry of Place focuses on Moran as an artist for whom the poetry of a landscape, or as Moran would say, the 'impression' that a landscape induced, was more compelling than any topographical accuracy.
