February 12 marks the birth of painter Thomas Moran (1837-1926). His depictions of Western landscapes inspired Americans to conserve and cherish spectacular wilderness areas as part of their national heritage. In the summer of 1871, Moran joined the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories . Headed by Ferdinand V. Hayden, this scientific exploration of lands along the Yellowstone River in northwestern Wyoming and southeastern Montana included a painter and a photographer. Visual documentation not only served to verify textual reports but also stimulated public interest.

Thomas Moran apprenticed to a Philadelphia wood engraving firm, but by 1858 at the age of twenty-one, he had exhibited an oil painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Encouraged by the marine painter, James Hamilton, Moran traveled to London in 1861 where he was deeply impressed by the dynamic effects and glowing color of J. M. W. Turner. He also visited France and Italy in 1866 to study the Old Masters, but his early American reputation was gained as an illustrator. In 1871 Moran went west with the Hayden Expedition to record the wonders of the Yellowstone area, making annotated drawings and watercolors later used to illustrate articles in the popular press as well as the official report. Moran's watercolors and his very large oil painting, The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone X 144 inches (1872 National Museum of American Art, lent by the U.S. Department of the Interior), convinced the U. S. Congress to set this area aside as America's first national park.
Moran first visited the Grand Canyon of the Colorado in 1873 and the resulting Chasm of the Colorado National Museum of American Art, lent by the U. S. Department of the Interior) further enhanced his reputation as the preeminent painter of the Southwest. In 1879

I have always held that the grandest, most beautiful,
or wonderful in nature, would, in capable hands,
make the grandest, most beautiful pictures. Thomas Moran was born at Bolton in Lancashire, England in 1837, the son of a hand-loom weaver. His family, including brothers Edward and Peter, emigrated to the United States in 1844. He grew up in Philadelphia where he was apprenticed to a wood engraver, sketching designs on the blocks. His older brother, Edward, who was an established landscape painter, provided Thomas with his first art lessons.
Moran worked initially with watercolor but soon turned to oil. He exhibited his first oil in 1858 and made his first sketching trip westward in 1860, to Lake Superior. He continued his studies with local artist James Hamilton but in 1861-62 he returned to England with brother Edward where they fell under the influence of J.M.W. Turner while copying his works. Moran went to Europe again in 1866-67, meeting another influence, Corot , and making studies of Venice.

Religion is either the blessing or the bane of human existence depending on how you look at it.
If you're looking for a site that gives you a fairly broad overview of many different faiths, try here:
    Facets of Religion

    Christianity
My favorite historian, Edward Gibbon, wrote two beautifully sarcastic chapters in "The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" on the origins of Christianity. They should be required reading for all Christians, so that they can see how their beliefs might be perceived by someone looking at them from a slightly different perspective:
The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire: Chapter 15

The Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire: Chapter 16

The following websites, however, are a tad more orthodox.
You'll find out more than you probably want to know about Christian theology at one of the most amazing sites on the entire Web:
    Hall of Church History

If you're looking for Christian Classics, look no further: Christian Classics If you want the Catholic perspective, try: The Holy See These sites could be called "Catholics And How They Got That Way": Early Church Fathers Two Thousand Years of Catholic Writings This is my favorite Christian text. Even an unregenerate atheist reads this work in total awe of one of the most powerful minds that ever lived:

In 1871 the Hayden expedition set out to survey the sources of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers, the area that was soon to become the nation's first national park. Thomas Moran joined as artist of the team and depicted many of Yellowstone's geologic features and landscapes. These depictions later proved essential in convincing the United States Congress to establish Yellowstone as a national park. Thomas Moran was born in Langshire, England in 1837. In 1844 his family moved to Baltimore and later settled in Philadelphia. Around the age of 16, Moran began his artistic training as an apprentice in a wood engraver's shop. After two years Moran left his apprenticeship to begin a full-time painting career.

    Thomas Moran (1837 - 1926)
Towards the end of his life, the painter Thomas Moran wrote: "It has often occurred to me as a curious and anomalous fact, that American artists are prone to seek the subjects for their art in foreign lands, to the almost entire exclusion of their own.... That there is a nationalism in art needs no proof. It is bred from a knowledge of and sympathy with [one's own] surroundings and no foreigner can imbue himself with a spirit of a country not his own. Therefore he should paint his own land...." As a young man, Moran did just what he admonished other artists for doing: he went to Europe to study painting and find inspiration. But at the end of his prolific career he was more closely associated with the landscapes of the American West than almost any other painter.
Moran first achieved national recognition for the work he created while accompanying a geological and geographic survey headed by Ferdinand V. Hayden. In the late 19th century, the U.S. government made the surveying of Western territory an integral part of its domestic policy. Washington wanted to investigate the West with a view to promoting settlement and commerce and exploiting natural resources. From 1867-1879, the Federal government supported four Great Surveys, each extremely ambitious in scope; each expected to provide a comprehensive written report, accompanied by visual materials. Hayden's own instructions from the Secretary of the Interior were "to secure as full materials as possible for the illustration of your final report, such as sketches, photographs, etc."
