Claude Monet

The most lyrical of the impressionist painters, Claude Oscar Monet was also the most committed to recording transient effects of light and atmosphere. This aim led Monet and his colleagues to develop the techniques of impressionism. Monet advised his fellow painters to concentrate on the play of light and color of the objects that they had before them. The goal was to capture temporary phenomena, and this was pursued in a systematic manner, according to the laws of optics and complementary color relationships; yet the result was often a sheer celebration of painting itself, an expression of Monet's delight in the colors, textures, and shapes of the landscape.
During his youth Monet was struck by the constantly changing appearance of sea and sky on the north coast of France, near his native city of Le Havre. There, he became friendly with Eugene Boudin, a painter of coastal scenes, who encouraged him to become a painter. In 1859, Monet moved to Paris and attended the Academie Suisse, where he met Camille Pissarro. After a break for military service (1860-62) and a brief return to Le Havre, he returned to Paris to enroll in the studio of Charles Gleyre, where he met Pierre Auguste Renoir , Frederic Bazille, and Alfred Sisley. By 1865 he had embarked on a program of outdoor painting of marine and forest subjects, townscapes, and figures in landscape settings.

One of the creators of impressionism, Claude Monet is the eldest son of a Parisian shopkeeper. His paintings captured scenes of middle-class life and the ever-changing qualities of sunlight in nature. His technique of applying bright, unmixed colors in quick, short strokes became a hallmark of impressionism . He told a critic in 1880; innocence and spontaneity were the basis of his art. The family moved in 1845, and he spent his childhood in the port town of Le Havre. Young Monet had a talent for caricature. He took his early painting lessons there from the painter Eugen Boudin, who specialized in scenes of people strolling on beaches, worked up sketches out-of-doors. Boudin took an interest in him and showed him how to paint landscapes in the open and advised him to seek further training in Paris. Monet went there in 1859, but ignored the guidance he had gone to seek.

Claude Monet BACK
Monet is the quintessential Impressionist and as such his world is exhilarating beautiful. His style is characterized by a light, colorful palette, and he often applied unmixed paints directly onto a canvas prepared with a pure white base in order to enhance the luminosity of each color and increase the broken appearance of the picture. It was at the Salon of 1865 that his paintings of the Seine were very well received and prompted Cezanne to call Monet 'only an eye, but my God what an eye'. Monet exhibited in 5 of the 8 Impressionist exhibitions and suffered along with the rest of his group from hostility and lack of patronage. The 1880's were prolific years, but years of continued of poverty and depression. Not until 1889 did he have his first successful exhibition. He settled in Giverny in 1883 and except for a couple of trips abroad in his later years spent the rest of his life there. It was in Giverny that he created a lavish garden arranged elaborately with plants and flowers. This is where he created his famous water lily series of paintings. Monet who said he 'feared the dark more than death', died blind.
An excerpt form Monet by Trewin Copplestone:
Monet usually painted on standard-sized canvases with a white priming, a break from earlier tradition, in which forms and tones had been built up from dark to light on a dark-toned ground. However, although he said in 1920 that he "always insisted on painting on white canvases, in order to establish on them my scale of values," this state- ment is not entirely true; in fact he used a wide range of mid-toned primings, often a warm beige or light gray. From about 1860 the color of these primings became an element in the paintings, with small areas either being left unpainted or very lightly covered.
