The name was first used by critics, viewing a new exhibition held in 1874, and was directed precisely — and derisively — at a painting by Monet of a harbor at dawn, which he titled Impression: Sunrise . This painting is a striking example of the new style. How did Monet achieve the effect in this particular painting? Impression Sunrise , Claude Monet, 1873. The sun is set against the dawn, the orange color against the gray and the vibrant force of the sun against its motionless surroundings. To many spectators, the sun undulates or pulsates slightly. Why is this so? The sun is nearly the same luminance as the grayish clouds. Notice how the sun nearly disappears if you remove the color. (Click painting to reset.) This lack of contrast explains the painting’s eerie quality. The sun is perceived differently is different parts of our mind. To the more primitive subdivisions of our brain, the sun is nearly invisible. But to the primate subdivision, the sun appears normal. Thus, there is an inconsistency between our perception of the sun in the

Monet, Claude (1840-1926). French Impressionist painter. He is regarded as the archetypal Impressionist in that his devotion to the ideals of the movement was unwavering throughout his long career, and it is fitting that one of his pictures- Impression: Sunrise (Musée Marmottan, Paris; 1872)-gave the group his name. His youth was spent in Le Havre, where he first excelled as a caricaturist but was then converted to landscape painting by his early mentor Boudin , from whom he derived his firm predilection for painting out of doors. In 1859 he studied in Paris at the Atelier Suisse and formed a friendship with Pissarro . After two years' military service in Algiers, he returned to Le Havre and met Jongkind , to whom he said he owed `the definitive education of my eye'. He then, in 1862, entered the studio of Gleyre in Paris and there met

Forum Articles Impressionism Claude Monet Biography - 1840-1926
Claude Monet was one of the founding fathers of French Impressionism. Monet's concern was to reflect the influence of light on a subject. He never abandoned his Impressionist painting style until his death in 1926 when Fauvism and Cubism were en vogue and when abstract painting came into existence.
First Painting Lessons
Claude Monet was born in Paris, but grew up in Le Havre. His first artistic output were caricatures when he was a little boy. Close to his home was a little shop owned by a marine painter, Mr. Eugene Boudin. He recognized the talent of the boy and gave him his first painting lessons.

The Studio Boat by Claude Monet
Claude Monet painted The Studio Boat in 1874. Shortly after Monet moved to Argenteuil, he bought a boat and converted it into a floating studio. He kept it moored near his home and used it to get a vista of the riverbank from the water. As seen here, he also painted it from the bank to study the effects of shadow and reflection at a distance.

Monet, Claude. The Water-Lily Pond. Carnegie Institute: Pittsburgh, PA, 1920.
A limitless expanse of water lilies covers the walls of a room at the Orangerie in Paris producing a sense of awe at the culmination of Monet’s years of tedious focus upon his pond and the water lilies at Giverny: the Grandes Decorations (1921). Many people assume that his love of observing nature and efforts to capture the different effects of light on a setting, particularly the water in this case, inspired the enormous panels that create such an impressive effect. In fact, C.P. Weekes, author of The Invincible Monet stated, “Even his pictures, which to modern eyes appear the essence of romance, were to him scientifically exact reproductions of the effect of light on nature at any given moment” (Weekes 226). This study was a common theme in the multiple canvases of similar views as Monet explored the effects of light at different times of the day and seasons on the pond at Giverny, similar to what he had accomplished in other series. However, Weekes is wrong in his assumption that the Water Lilies existed devoid of any romantic influence. In fact, the reflections of the water lilies on the water are not a result of sunlight; instead, they symbolize Monet’s personal artistic reflection on his love for Alice Hoschede. Investigation of Monet’s progression, which focuses on the vast beauty of the reflection of the water lilies in his garden, proves that the loving relationship he had with Alice parallels his paintings, proving that this series was far from a simple study on light.

The inn where the couple was staying is reflected by the smooth water of the Seine. The rowboat painted in the foreground On the Banks of the Seine, Bennecourt reveals the early hallmarks of Impressionism: the commonplace subject of an intimate friend relaxing in an open-air, waterside setting in the countryside near Paris ; the broken, vibrating brush strokes that depict the fluctuations of light; a high-keyed palette of rapidly applied blues, greens, and yellows; and forms that evoke a sense of immediacy.

Alfred Atmore Pope, c. 1890.
Archives, Hill-Stead Museum, Farmington, CT. Alfred Atmore Pope, whose daughter, Theodate, designed the Farmington home that later became Hill-Stead Museum , was a self-made, successful 19th -century Cleveland industrialist with a passion for art. Pope carefully collected a small group of what he considered the finest of the then contemporary impressionist paintings. It was unusual for Americans to collect impressionist paintings in the 1890s, and Pope clearly had an appreciation of this new style and its practitioners. During a stay in Paris in 1894 Pope visited Claude Monet at his home in Giverny. He immediately posted his observations of the experience to his close friend, business associate, and fellow collector Harris Whittemore of Naugatuck , Connecticut . The following is an excerpt from the letter he wrote describing his lunch with Monet. Hotel Westminster [ Paris ]
August 25, 1894 Harris dear- The ladies are off for a day to Fontainebleau . I am just in from a trip to Giverny with Mr. Glenzer to see Monet and his cathedrals. Naturally I think of you on such an occasion. Although too sorry that I could not speak the language I enjoyed it more than I could describe in two languages. My love to "you all" as they say in the south.

54. Artist Profile - Claude Monet, French Impressionist Painter, His Life And Work
Artist profile of French Impressionist, claude monet his life and work, his influence on art.
http://www.ndoylefineart.com/monet.html
@import url(http://www.homestead.com/~media/elements/Text/font_styles.css); Artist Profile: Claude Monet
For many years, what I read about Monet seemed to indicate an artist with a prodigious work ethic, who went about the labor of his profession without the hindrance of temperament. His unwavering focus was almost intimidating. Finally, I read a book which described his behavior on the bad weather days - when he couldn't go out to paint the landscape. According to this book, at such times Monet was so inconsolable that he wouldn't get out of bed. What a relief to find him human!
He had to have the best eyesight in human history. What Cezanne was to cerebral painting, Monet was to visual painting. Cezanne supposedly said of him, "Monet is just an eye - but God, what an eye!" His placement of forms, large and miniscule, was so precise that everything in the image was perfectly formed and placed, just like it is when we see it in nature. But anyone who has ever painted, particularly landscapes, knows that to achieve the same coherence on a blank canvas is not nearly as easy as Monet makes it look. The forms and colors are constantly misbehaving, in the wrong places, with the wrong color.
This facility with paint has led some to dismiss Monet's work, along with Impressionism, as merely visual, naturalistic, and committing the ultimate sin - formlessness. But to those who prize color over form, Monet's work is colossal in its nature - just as colossal in its own way as Cezanne. Though he began with Impressionism's fleeting moment in time, Monet's work over time became less interested in external reality, and more in the abstract qualities of paint on canvas. This development peaked with his late water lilies series of large paintings, in which color, light and paint were the subjects, anticipating mid-20th century painterly abstraction.
