Claude Monet is generally considered to be the most outstanding figure among Impressionists. The term Impressionism derives from his picture Impression: Sunrise. A title was needed in a hurry for the catalogue of the exhibition in 1874. Monet suggested simply Impression, and the catalogue editor, Renoir's brother Edouard, added an explanatory Sunrise. The artist was not to know that because of criticism which seized upon the first word he had given the entire movement its name.

However, when considered with reference to Monet's life and work, the concepts applied in interpreting Impressionist art - in particular, those of the impression, the stroke, the contrast of colors, and the consistency with which the consequences of the Impressionist ideas visible at the beginning of an artist's career are elaborated in the long course of that individual career - make Monet's position central. "By his fellow painters Monet was regarded as a leader, not because he was the most intellectual or theoretically minded or because he was able to answer questions that they could not answer, but because in his art he seemed to be more alert to the possibilities latent in their common ideas, which he then developed in his work in a more radical way than did the others. Considering how all these painters developed their intensely personal manners with respect to the new artistic ideas, we may observe that the new elements appeared most often for the first time in the work of Monet and then were taken over by the other Impressionists, who incorporated them as suggestions or as definite means and applied them in their own ways.

Monet, with Pissaro , is recognized as being one of the creators of Impressionism , and he was the most convinced and consistent Impressionist of them all. From his earliest days as an artist, he was encouraged to trust his perceptions and the hardships he suffered never deterred him from that pursuit. Claude Monet was born in Paris on November 14, 1840 but all his impressions as a child and adolescent were linked with Le Havre, the town to which his family moved about 1845. His father had a grocery store there. In his youth he painted caricature portraits and exhibited them in the art supplies store in which worked at the time. Eventually Boudin persuaded the young Monet to paint in the open air with him and become a landscape painter. His family was not against his wish to become a painter, but his independent views, criticism towards academic art and refusal to enter a decent school of art led to constant quarrels with his family. After finishing his military service in Algeria ... Continued...

Claude Monet was a key figure in the Impressionist movement that transformed French painting in the second half of the nineteenth century. Throughout his long career, Monet consistently depicted the landscape and leisure activities of Paris and its environs as well as the Normandy coast. He led the way to twentieth-century modernism by developing a unique style that strove to capture on canvas the very act of perceiving nature. annual Salons of the 1860s. of life's beauty and transience. Claude Monet was born November 14, 1840 in Paris, France. Monet was the leader of a group of French artists called the "Impressionists," which included such painters as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro
Monet's family moved to the port town of Le Havre in 1845. He took his early art lessons from the painter, Eugene Boudin . Boudin, who worked up sketches out-of doors, encouraged Monet to do the same. "Suddenly the veil was torn away.... My destiny as a painter opened out to me," he later said. For the next 60+ years Monet explored the effects of light on outdoor scenes. He was the first artist to let his initial impressions stand as completed works, rather than as "notes" done in preparation for work in the studio.
Monet moved to Paris in 1859, where he met and befriended Pissarro and Edouard Manet . He married in 1870, and in 1871 settled in Argenteuil. He fixed up a boat with an easel and painted his way up and down the Seine River, capturing his impressions of the interplay of light, water and atmosphere.
In 1874 Monet and a group of painters including Pissarro and Renoir banded together to form a society of artists. They gave a public exhibition of their work at the studio of a Paris photographer. Monet exhibited a painting called "Impression: Sunrise." His painting gave the group its name, coined in derision by critic Louis Leroy referring to the entire exhibition as "Impressionistic." Despite the financial failure of this first exhibit, the Impressionist continued to exhibit together until 1886. Monet slowly achieved recognition in the years after the Impressionists disbanded. In 1883, he settled in Giverny, France and continued to paint, and explore his fascination with light until his death on December 5, 1926.

One Of The Greatest Painters
Born: November 14, 1840

Claude Oscar Monet was a French impressionist painter who brought the study of the transient effects of natural light to its most refined expression. Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, but he spent most of his childhood in Le Havre. There, in his teens, he studied drawing; he also painted seascapes and landscapes outside with the French painter Eugene Louis Boudin. By 1859 Monet had committed himself to a career as an artist and began to spend as much time in Paris as possible. During the 1860s he was associated with the pre-impressionist painter Edouard Manet, and with other aspiring French painters destined to form the impressionist school—Camille Pissarro, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley. Working outside, Monet painted simple landscapes and scenes of contemporary middle-class society, and he began to have some success at official exhibitions. As his style developed, however, Monet violated one traditional artistic convention after another in the interest of direct artistic expression. His experiments in rendering outdoor sunlight with a direct, sketch-like application of bright color became more and more daring, and he seemed to cut himself off from the possibility of a successful career as a conventional painter supported by the art establishment.

Claude Monet: 1840-1926
A Review by Mark Harden The Art Institute of Chicago recently closed the curtain on one of the most successful art exhibits of all time. "Claude Monet: 1840-1926" was the largest and most comprehensive exhibition ever devoted to the paintings of the leader of the Impressionists. One hundred fifty-nine works from around the world were brought together for this once-in-a-lifetime show. The attendance was unparalleled. During its run from July 22 to November 26, 1995, advance admissions were completely sold out, leading to the surreal spectacle of tickets for an art exhibit being scalped as if it were the Super Bowl. The show was an aesthetic as well as a popular success, with the selection of paintings offering the finest examples of Monet's work from every period of his career. For the many art enthusiasts who were unable to attend the show, Glyphs presents a selection of eight important works, with commentary. We would like to express our appreciation to the Art Institute of Chicago for providing slides for our digital reproduction. "Haystacks at Chailly at Sunrise", 1865

Home Virtual Museum Individual Artists : Claude Monet Impressionism as a technique devoted to capturing effects of light out of doors is exemplified most purely in the painting of Claude Monet, who forced it to its limits, and then beyond. Monet was born in Paris on February 14, 1840 the son of a grocer; his parents refused to support him in a career as an artist, offering to buy him out of his military service if he would abandon the idea. This he refused to do, and by the time he was sixteen he had a local reputation as a caricaturist in his home city of Le Havre. His interest in landscape was stimulated by painters who came to Le Havre to paint the port or the beaches, particularly by Eugene Boudin . In 1859, at the age of 19, Monet went to Paris. That year he visited the Salon several times. He refused to return home or to enter the Ecole-des-Beaux-Arts, but began instead at the Atelier Suisse, where Gustave Courbet had worked and Camille Pissarro sometimes came. At a dealer's exhibition the following year, Monet noticed pictures by Courbet , Eugene Delacroix, and the works of the Barbizon School. Meanwhile he often found members of

Claude Monet (1840-1926)
Monet was a French artist, the leading member of the Impressionist group of painters. In 1870, Monet married Camille Doncieux, who had already borne his son. To escape the Franco-Prussian war, the family moved to London. After their return to France they settled at Argenteuil, a boating centre on the Seine which drew many other Impressionist painters. Working from nature was a particular hallmark of the Impressionist movement, and one that Monet embraced, reflecting in his paintings the ever-changing impact of light and weather conditions. In 1872, he visited Le Havre where he painted 'An Impression, Sunrise'. When exhibited in 1874 part of its title was used derisively by a critic to label the whole movement 'Impressionism'. This exhibition is now known as the First Impressionist Exhibition.

Monet, Claude Oscar (November 14, 1840, Paris - December 5, 1926, Giverny), French painter, is generally considered to be the most outstanding figure among Impressionists. The term Impressionism derives from his picture Impression: Sunrise . A title was needed in a hurry for the catalogue of the exhibition in 1874. Monet suggested simply Impression , and the catalogue editor, Renoir's brother Edouard, added an explanatory Sunrise . This had given the entire movement its name. Monet took his paints and canvases into the field to paint directly from nature. He wanted to capture the momentary effects of color and light in his paintings. He created several series of paintings, in which he painted the same subject (a cathedral, haystacks, etc.) many times to capture the effects of sunlight and the seasons. Monet loved to paint nature and landscapes, but also liked painting people in beautiful surroundings. He was using a short brush strokes, which often looked rather like spots of paint, not lines. Often, when you looked at his painting from a short distance you couldn't see what it was, but if you stepped away you could see a beautiful scene. This was a completely new way of painting that became the mark of Impressionism By the time he was in his 50s, Monet was a successful and prosperous artist. It was during this period that he produced numerous versions of his famous

Claude Monet (CLAWD maw NEH) was born in Paris, France. Even as a young teenager it became apparent that he had artistic ability. He would draw caricatures of his teachers on his schoolwork. A caricature is a drawing that represents the person, but certain features will be exaggerated, or made larger than they actually are. He began to charge people to draw their caricatures and was able to have a steady income and even save some money.
He served for two years in the military in Algeria on the continent of Africa, but he became ill and was sent home to recover.
He married and he and Camille had two sons. Unfortunately Camille died a year after their second son Michael was born.
He enjoyed painting outdoors observing how the light would change as the day progressed. He painted some scenes over and over again, and each would be different from the others because it was painted at a different time of day.
Monet and several other artists were experimenting with a method of putting paint on the canvas without blending the colors. Brush strokes and dabs of color would be placed side by side. Monet called it the "division of colours". When you stepped back from the canvas, your eyes would blend the colors together. This was not the traditional method of painting, and many people rejected their works.

Claude Monet's Biography

Oscar-Claude Monet was born in Paris, France on November 14, 1840. He was the second child born to Claude Adolphe and Louise-Justine Monet. When Claude was about five, the family moved from Paris to the small town of La Havre. His father's brother-in-law, Jacques Lacadre, owned successful wholesale business in La Havre. His wife, Marie-Jeanne Lecadre, convinced him to offer Claude's father a job.

Claude Monet spent his childhood in La Havre. He first became known for his caricatures and exhibited this work locally. During this time, he befriended fellow artist Eugene Boudin who became his mentor. Boudin influenced Monet to begin plein air or outdoor painting. He also encouraged Claude to try oil paint and pastels, instead of charcoal as a medium for his artwork. "It is only now that I have read the kind article you wrote on my exhibition, published in the Journal de Paris. Allow me to express my rather belated thanks. I am doubly grateful since very few of the critics have the courage to defend me, or atleast to write what they think. But as you rightly say so, people must first of all learn to look at nature, and only then may they see and understand what we are trying to do."
