Paintings The initiator in Impressionism painted many paintings from the Le Havre landscape, where he grew up. Later he spent a lot of time paintings his gardens in Argentueil, Véceuil and Giverny. Very famous is his 'Impression: Soleil Levant (Sunrise)' that directly led to the name Impressionists. Other famous work includes a series of paintings from his 'Haystacks' and 'Water-lillies'.

Quote "Everyone discusses my art and pretend to understand, as if it were necessary to understand, when it is simply necessary to love."

Interesting Impressionism was, at first, an abusive term. Critic Louis Leroy, who had visited Le Salon des Refusés (Salon of the Rejects), first donated the name Impressionism to this art movement. Leroy declared that it could indeed only be an impression and that it could hardly be seen as a finished work. The Impressionists took their new name for granted and a new art movement was born.
Claude Monet had, apart from painting, also another passion: gardening. In fact Monet even combined these two passions by making paintings of his gardens. The last ten years of his life, Claude Monet spent most of his time painting his own water garden.

C laude Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris. A few years later, his family moved the the Normandie harbor town of Le Havre, where his father ran a marine trade supply store. Monet spent most of his youth in Le Havre, drawing caricatures of the locals, a talent which got him into trouble at school. Claude was a rebel, and he frequently disobeyed the rules. Regardless of her son's insubordination in school, Louise Monet was very encouraging of her son's budding talent. By the age of fifteen, Claude was selling caricatures for as much as 20 francs, which did not please his parents, who were well off from their prosperous business. Nonetheless, Monet continued drawing caricatures, and wasn't really interested in painting until he met Eugène Boudin, the man who would become his mentor. Boudin encouraged the young Monet to go outside and paint nature scenes, playing an important role in the young artist's development. Louise Monet died shortly following her son's very first showing, but his Aunt, Marie-Jeanne, soon took over the care and support of the gifted teen, who was showing signs of true talent as a painter.

Claude Monet was a founder and central figure of the 19th century art movement known as Impressionism. Early in his career, Monet painted realistic landscapes, but after the 1870s he focused more on the effect of changing light on everyday objects. Often he painted multiple studies of the same subjects, from train stations and haystacks to the London skyline, the Rouen Cathedral and, most famously, water lilies. During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71) Monet fled from Paris to England, where he formed friendships with Camille Pisarro, Auguste Renoir and other figures central to Impressionism. He returned to Paris at the end of the war, but ended up settling in Giverny, where he began a long series of paintings of haystacks (or grainstacks) during the 1890s. Monet's Impressionistic paintings sold well and his financial success allowed him to purchase property in Giverny, where he built a large garden that became the subject of his series Water Lilies (1906-26). Monet, Claude (b. Nov. 14, 1840, Paris, Fr.d. Dec. 5, 1926, Giverny)
French painter, initiator, leader, and unswerving advocate of the Impressionist style. He is regarded as the archetypal Impressionist in that his devotion to the ideals of the movement was unwavering throughout his long career, and it is fitting that one of his pictures Impression: Sunrise (Musée Marmottan, Paris; 1872)gave the group his name.
His youth was spent in Le Havre, where he first excelled as a caricaturist but was then converted to landscape painting by his early mentor Boudin , from whom he derived his firm predilection for painting out of doors. In 1859 he studied in Paris at the Atelier Suisse and formed a friendship with Pissarro . After two years' military service in Algiers, he returned to Le Havre and met Jongkind , to whom he said he owed `the definitive education of my eye'. He then, in 1862, entered the studio of Gleyre in Paris and there met Renoir Sisley , and Bazille , with whom he was to form the nucleus of the Impressionist group. Monet's devotion to painting out of doors is illustrated by the famous story concerning one of his most ambitious early works
