  • Born: 7 March 1872 Birthplace: Amersfoort, Netherlands Died: 1 February 1944 Best Known As: Dutch abstract artist with the colored rectangles
Name at birth: Pieter Cornelius Mondriaan, Jr. Piet Mondrian was a 20th century abstract painter whose most famous compositions are made up of black lines and colored rectangles. Mondrian's early works were naturalistic and impressionistic landscapes, but his discovery of cubism around 1910 put him on the path toward pure abstraction. He left his home in the Netherlands for Paris in 1912, but returned to the Netherlands in 1914 to care for his sick father. He remained there during World War I, exploring abstract forms and formulating an approach he called neo-plasticism. Back in Paris after the war, he made what may be his most famous painting, Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue

Born as Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan Jr. in Amersfoort (The Netherlands) on March 7, 1872, his future lay in teaching. Piet Mondrian's father, who was also a teacher, wished that his son with follow in his footsteps. Piet Mondrian earned his diploma in teaching but decided In 1892 to enter the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.
MONDRIAN'S FIRST YEARS AS AN ARTIST
Piet Mondrian was heavily influenced by what he learned at the Academy of Fine Arts. Mondrian's first works were classical landscape and still-life impressionistic paintings. In 1909 and 1910 Mondrian experimented with symbolism and cubism. It was after visiting an exhibition of Braque and Picasso (the two founders of Cubism) that Mondrian decided to move to Paris, the heart of visual arts.
Soon after his arrival in Paris, Mondrian reached international fame with exhibitions in Paris and Berlin. Mondrian didn't make a living by selling his own work, but instead he sold works he copied at The Louvre. In Paris he first started developing his own abstract style.
THE STYLE
In 1914 when World War I began, Mondrian was visiting his home country and was unable to return to Paris. During the war years, Mondrian continued reducing the geometrical shapes and colors in his paintings which defined his neo-plasticism, also known as The Style (De Stijl). This movement which included Theo van Doesburg, Bart van der Leck, and Georges Vantongerloo, extended its principles of abstraction and simplification beyond painting and sculpture to architecture and graphic and industrial design. Their newly founded magazine 'De Stijl' contained several essays on abstract art of Mondrian. In July 1919 Mondrian returned to Paris, where he decided to withdraw from The Style when the artist van Doesburg introduced diagonal elements into his work.

Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue is characteristic of the artist’s later work, for which he is best known. Mondrian created a new style called Neoplasticism , based on some of the ideas of the cubists. He created a series of almost identical geometric paintings based on a theory of universal harmony. Neoplasticism is the theory and practice of the de Stijl group, chiefly characterized by an emphasis on the formal structure of a work of art, and restriction of spatial or linear relations to vertical and horizontal movements as well as restriction of the artist's palette to black, white, and the primary colors. B I O Mondrian, Piet (Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan) 1872–1944, Dutch painter, who carried abstraction to its furthest limits. Through radical simplification of composition and color, he sought to expose the basic principles that underlie all appearances. He developed "neoplastic" aesthetic involving reduction of paintings to elements of straight lines, primary colors, noncolors. Mondrian became the most radical abstractionist artist of his era. After studying cubism, Mondrian’s work became increasingly nonrepresentational, until his compositions such as

Known as "the father of geometric abstraction," Piet Mondrian (1877-1944) was a pivotal figure in the revolution of Modern Art that began with Cubism in the early 20th century. In 1940, the great artist fled the war in Europe to New York City. A t his death in 1944 , all that was found in his apartment was a cache of personal papers. He had pared down his few possessions to some postcards, cablegrams, address-book pages, a notebook, an important unpublished essay, and his horoscope readings, all of which provide an intimate glimpse of a significant artist. The correspondence details his fears and anxieties elicited by the war. Personal photographs include old-style cabinet cards depicting his parents, candid shots of his early studio in Holland, and a wallet-size photo of Madame Blavatsky, the founder of Theosophy. These items were held, unseen and unpublished, by Mondrian's estate until a buyer for them could be found.
In a recent arrangement between ASRL and Stanford University Libraries, the papers will be placed online using ASRL's original cyberBOOK+ Software. (A similar arrangement has been made for ASRL's extensive holdings of the papers, manuscripts and antiquarian library of the late Stephen Jay Gould, noted Harvard scientist and writer.)

MONDRIAAN, PIETER CORNELIS [MONDRIAN, PIET] [1872-1944]
Piet Mondrian lived the last four years of his life in the United States, and he never became a naturalized U.S. Citizen, so one might ask why consider him one of the famous Dutch Americans. The question is a fair one, and the reason he was picked was because the art he produced during the last four years of his life became an important part of his overall oeuvre. In addition, all of his life's work is now prominently displayed in the most prestigious art museums of the world. Mondrian died in early 1944 from pneumonia and was then still actively engaged in artistic activity, as can be seen by the studio he left behind. He was not ready to die but he caught pneumonia and was unable to survive it. He was only 71. Mondrian was engaged in artistic activity during his entire life. His father was a school principal, and Mondrian as the oldest son decided to pursue a school teaching career, following in his father's footsteps. But during his early school teaching years his hobby was sketching and painting. And his entire career from there on until his death was consumed in the graphic arts. While a youngster and a teenager, he lived with his family in the town of Winterswijk, the Netherlands, from 1880 to 1892. The town in his honor unveiled a sculpture of him in 2006. Mondrian's birth name was Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan. He was known as Piet and while in Paris in 1911 he dropped one "a" from his last name and there after was known as Piet Mondrian. Piet had four siblings. They were Carel [1880-1956], Johanna Christina [1870-1939], Willem Frederik [1874-1945] and Louis [1877-1943]. Mondrian never married and as a result there are no offspring. When asked why he never married his response was that he could not afford being married in his younger years, and he never met the right woman in his later years.

Up through 1907, Mondrian’s paintings followed an effective trend of art in The Netherlands. His paintings were usually calm landscapes painted with delicate colors, and picturesque lighting, and his subjects were usually in the meadows and pastures around Amsterdam. In 1903 Mondrian gained an artistic reputation when he won the Willink van Collem Prize for a still life painting. During the same year Mondrian visited one of his friends in Belgium. There, the beauty of the landscape had a profound influence on him. He decided to remain in Belgium and did not returned to Amsterdam until 1905, his art having visibly changed. He no longer strove to grasp the picturesque lighting as before; instead his paintings had more of rhythmic and compositional structure to them. Yet his paintings still seemed remain within the traditional framework of contemporary Dutch art. Jan Toorop led Mondrian to begin experimenting with brighter, more vibrant colors in 1908. Toorop had led the Luminist movement in The Netherlands and mastered Diviosionalism, a movement that emphasized the use of the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. Mondrian began to do the same by also limiting his use of color to the three basics. His Luminist works were exhibited in a group show at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1909, which firmly established him among the Dutch individualist painters. In 1911 Mondrian saw, for the first time, the Cubist works of Georges Braque and Pable Picasso in Amsterdam. He was so deeply amazed by their works that he moved to Paris in 1912. In Paris he found a home in the Montparnasse district and almost immediately began to adjust the principles of Cubism to his own use. He produced many analytical series such as “Trees” (1912-1913) and “Scaffoldings” (1912=1914). He progressively moved towards increased abstraction, which led him to a style of only vertical and horizontal brushstrokes.

Piet Mondrian biography
Due to the artist's less than flamboyant lifestyle and temperament, a Mondrian biography is easily written. This does not however, reduce the importance of the work of this very exciting artist and this Piet Mondrian biography serves as a tribute, as well as a source of information.
Pieter Cornelis Mondrian was born on March 7th 1872 in Amersvoort in central Holland and lived there for the first eight years of his life. He was the second child of four, with two brothers and one sister. His father Pieter Cornelis Sr. was headmaster of an elementary school, a gifted draftsman and amateur artist. Uncle Frits Mondrian was a self-taught painter and commercially successful, even the Russian court bought his work. As Piet Jr. progressed towards abstract art, he came into conflict with uncle Frits, which seems to have had something to do with Piet Mondrian signing his paintings with " Piet Mondrian " (instead of Mondriaan) from 1912 on.
The Mondrians, devout Calvinists, were an artistic family who painted and made music and Mondrian Sr. could afford a decent education for his four children. Early on Piet Jr. proved to have a talent for drawing. His father gave him drawing lessons and took his son to the countryside to sketch. Uncle Frits taught him the basics of painting.
As a teenager Mondrian was thoroughly educated in drawing and visited several schools. His education was complemented by a retired art-teacher Baet van Ueberfeldt. Mondrian Sr. intended his son to become a drawing teacher so that Piet would be able to make a living. Mondrian won his licences and was allowed to teach at primary and secondary schools. With his licences under his belt, having fulfilled his father's demands, Piet Mondrian decided to become an artist, not a teacher, in 1892. His father could not afford an education at the National Academy of Art in Amsterdam, but Uncle Frits managed to obtain an allowance for Piet Mondrian; he was 20 when he moved to Amsterdam.

Back in Paris after the war, he made what may be his most famous painting, Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue (1921), a composition of primary colors in rectangles on a grid of black lines. In 1938 he went to England and in 1940 he moved to New York, where he continued to discard "non-essentials" and restrict his works to "basic forms of beauty." Influenced by the philosophical approach of theosophy, Mondrian believed painting to be a two-dimensional interpretation of nature that is guided by the artist's intuition. His paintings include Still Life with Ginger Pot I Composition (1916) and Broadway Boogie Woogie Other 20th-century abstract artists include the Spanish multimedia specialist and American dripper Jackson Pollock
