Home Virtual Museum Individual Artists : Jean Francois Millet Jean Francois Millet: 1814 - 1875 Jean Francois Millet, the second of eight children, spent his youth in a village near Greville in Normandy. His father was a farm laborer and led the music in the parish church, so that a sense of the interaction of religion and life was instilled into the young Jean Francois. He never lost his devoutness, nor his desire to interpret the Bible in terms of the life of the French laborer, much as Rembrandt had done with the life of the Dutch townspeople around him. Millet worked for some time in the fields with his father. But his talent for drawing revealed itself, and at the age of 18 he began his studies under a minor painter in Cherbourg. Five years later he went to Paris, to a studio of a Romantic painter, Paul Delaroche. But he learned far more from the works of the Venetians and Michelangelo and Nicolas Poussin. He did not enjoy Paris. Apparently he kept to himself, avoiding his fellow students, who included Thomas Couture, the future teacher of Edouard Manet . Millet was always short of money, and in order to maintain himself produced small, sensuous oils or pastels in the style of Fragonard, Boucher, or Antoine Watteau, which he could sell to dealers for a few francs.

The Wood Sawyers French artist. A leading member of the Barbizon School , he painted scenes of peasant life and landscapes. The Angelus The Gleaners Born in Normandy of a peasant family, he went to Paris to study in 1837. After a long struggle to earn a living by painting shepherdesses and nude bathers in the 18th-century style galant , he found his true vein in The Winnower of 1848. He settled at the village of Barbizon 1849, with his second wife and growing family, and there, still in poverty, devoted himself exclusively to the paintings of peasant life for which he is famous, such as The Reapers The Gleaners 1857, and The Angelus Typically, his paintings and drawings convey the sombre melancholy of a peasant existence, a melancholy often emphasized by a twilight atmosphere. Though later dismissed as sentimental, such works were among the first to try to convey the dignity of rural life.

Millet jean françois painter french Gruchy near Cherbourg 1814 - Barbizon, 1875
Jean-François Millet, son of Normandy farmers, began studying painting in Cherbourg. In 1838, with the aid of a bursary, he moved to Paris and became briefly, a pupil of P. Delaroche, but soon decided that he preferred to work alone. He made frequent visits to the Louvre Museum , where he was particularly influenced by Michelangelo , Poussin and Rubens. In order to earn a living he painted shop signs and numerous portraits.
In the 1840s, Millet spent most of his time in Cherbourg, and, after the death of his first wife in 1844, spent a year in Le Havre where he exhibited with some success.
In 1849, he was persuaded by Charles-Emile Jacque to settle with his new family in Barbizon and discovered the green landscapes of this region where Rousseau and Diaz were already living. Unlike the other Barbizon painters he was principally inspired by the occupations rather than the scenery of rural life: the daily toil of the peasants became his preferred subject (Le Semeur, 1850; Les Glaneuses the Angelus
