Biography:

Jean-Francois Millet studied under Delaroche, learning his naturalistic approach to tranquil and pastoral scenes and portraits. Critics were unsettled by the unromantic depictions of rural life, and in the 1850’s, the French government became paranoid of the political and socialist messages his paintings might suggest. After making the acquaintance of Rousseau in 1849, Millet joined the Barbizon School and converted to landscapes.

Jean-Francois Millet
Jean-François Millet was a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. He is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers. He can be categorized as part of the movement termed "naturalism", but also as part of the movement of "realism".
Born in the village of Gruchy, in Gréville-Hague (Normandy), Millet moved to Paris in 1838. He received his academic schooling with Paul Dumouchel, and with Jérome Langlois in Cherbourg. After 1840 he turned away from the official painting style and came under the influence of Honoré Daumier. In 1849 he withdrew to Barbizon to apply himself to painting many, often poetic, peasant scenes.
One of the most well known of Millet's paintings is "The Gleaners" (1857), depicting women stooping in the fields to glean the leftovers from the harvest. It is a powerful and timeless statement about the working class.
Picking up what was left of the harvest was regarded as one of the lowest jobs in society. However, Millet offered these women as the heroic focus of the picture; previously, servants were depicted in paintings as subservient to a noble or king. Here, light illuminates the women's shoulders as they carry out their work. The forms of the three figures themselves nearly silhouetted against the lighter field, show balance and harmony.

    Millet Jean-Francois - January 1st 1970
Jean-Francois Millet (4 October 1814 - 20 January 1875), French Realist painter, member of the Barbizon School Today he is famous mainly as a painter of peasants and rural scenes. He was a member of the Barbizon School , but he chose to concentrate on figure painting, abandoning landscapes till the last years of his life. His way of painting rural scenes are marked by the nostalgia of a lost, golden age, classical in composition but with a strong realist manner of representing things. He was inspired by his own childhood memories, the Barbizon School , and also the old masters. Passionate, almost obssesed by the realism of his paintings. Millet was the son of a farmer and was born in Greville in Normandy . Since childhood he showed a great interest and talent in drawing, and despite his family's opposition, he left for Paris in 1838, where he was the student of Paul Delaroche. As he didn't have no means, he would fight poverty for the most part of his life, chosing to sacrifice everything for his art. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1840. At that time he was influenced by Poussin and Eustache Le Sueur, and painted mainly mythological subjects and portraits. He had the briliant idea to return to his childhood for subjects, and chose to paint the peasant life, which he will do for the rest of his career. He will exhibit one of the first of these paintings in 1848 at the Salon, and was praised by Theophile Gautier. The painting was bought by Alexandre Ledru-Rollin, the Minister of the Interior.

French painter. Born to a peasant family, he studied with a painter in Paris, but when one of his two submissions to the Salon was rejected (1840), he returned to Cherbourg, where initially he painted mostly portraits. His first success came with The Milkmaid (1844), and in 1848 another peasant scene, The Winnower , was shown at the Salon. In 1849 he settled in the village of Barbizon. Because he continued to exhibit peasant scenes that emphasized the labours of rustic life, he was accused of being a socialist, but his aims were not political. His Angelus (1859) became one of the most popular paintings of the 19th century. Works Cited Jean-Francois Millet, like Courbet , attempted to show his political leanings through the subjects and style of his paintings by portraying everyday peasants in idyllic settings as a way to attack the upper classes while dignifying the working class. Millet, born in 1841, grew up in the rural countryside of France. He spent most of his childhood in extreme poverty, living among the working class peasants that he later used as the subjects for his paintings. Millet studied under Paul Delaroche in 1838, and became a Realist, like Courbet. However, unlike Courbet, Millet prefered to paint his subjects with an idyllic gloss in order to criticise the bourgeoisie. L'Angelus picture courtesy of http://home.connectnet.com

But though a family of rustics, the Millets were far removed from rusticity of manners: they were serious folks, profoundly pious , a strange stock of Catholic Puritans whose stern sentiments of religion, handed down from generation to generation, gave them something like an aristocratic character ; they were incapable of mean ideas soul Pascal Bossuet , Nicole, and Charron parish priest in the cult of Vergil and the Bible ; the "Georgics" and the Psalms, which he read in Latin, were his favourites. - Homi Bhaba [The] capacity of objects to serve as traces of authentic experience is ... exemplified by the souvenir. The souvenir distinguishes experiences. We do not need or desire souvenirs of events that are repeatable. Rather, we need and desire souvenirs of events that are reportable, events whose materiality has escaped us, events that thereby exist only through the invention of narrative.
    - Susan Stewart In French realist painting and literature, references to popular culture in the form of printed broadsides, Epinal prints, poems, songs, and other forms of "folk art" are often taken to be expressions of an artist's left-leaning political tendencies. But even though Jean-François Millet collected and appreciated such peasant handcrafts as ceramics, costumes, and hand-worked copper pots, he did not seem to link these so-called arts du peuple with the same radical political sympathies that Gustave Courbet, George Sand, and many others in the late 1840s found in them. Because Millet's relationship to popular representations of rural life is ambiguous and fraught with contradictions, much more so than Courbet's, it has been little discussed.

An exhibit at the Frick Art and Historical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
By Eula Holmes 13 September 2000 Use this version to print The following letter from a contributor to the WSWS comments on an exhibit of the works of nineteenth century French painter Jean-Francois Millet that was on display in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The exhibit is currently in Amsterdam. The group of drawings that inspired the exhibit and pastels are a part of the permanent collection of the Frick Art and Historical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This show was appropriately called . Visitors enjoyed the exhibition's stay in Pittsburgh last spring. Its new home is in the Rijksmuseum Vincent Van Gogh in Amsterdam. The exhibition is a summary review of Millet's work. Shown are his rarely seen pastels, watercolors and drawings. Various stages of works of art are shown and displayed for their own beauty and use of technique. Millet (1814-75) is recognized as one of the founders of the Realist movement. He was also well known for his exceptional skill as a draftsman and his commitment to drawing still life pictures. His oil paintings are better appreciated as one sees how they were given life, form and detail by the preceding drawings of the subjects.

    PREFACE
In making a selection of Millet's pictures, devoted as they are to the single theme of French peasant life, variety of subject can be obtained only by showing as many phases of that life as possible. Our illustrations therefore represent both men and women working separately in the tasks peculiar to each, and working together in the labors shared between them. There are in addition a few pictures of child life. The selections include a study of the field, the dooryard, and the home interior, and range from the happiest to the most sombre subjects. They show also considerable variety in artistic motive and composition, and taken together fairly represent the scope of Millet's work. ESTELLE M. HURLL. NEW BEDFORD, MASS. March, 1900.
