From LoveToKnow 1911
SIR JOHN EVERETT MILLAIS (1829-1896), English painter, was born at Southampton on the 8th of June 1829, the son of John William Millais, who belonged to an old Norman family settled in Jersey for many generations, and Emily Mary nee Evamy, the widow of a Mr Hodgkinson. After his birth the family returned to Jersey, where the boy soon began to sketch. At the age of eight he drew his maternal grandfather. He went to school for a short time, but showed no inclination for study, and was afterwards educated entirely by his mother. In 1835 the family removed to Dinan in Brittany , where he sketched the French officers, to their great amusement, and in 1837, on the. family's return to Jersey, he was taught drawing by a Mr Bissel, In 1838 he came to London , and on the strong recommendation of Sir Martin Archer Shee , P.R.A., his future was decided. He was sent at once to Sass's school, and entered the Academy schools in 1840. He won a silver medal from the Society of Arts in 1839, and carried off all the prizes at the Royal Academy . He was popular amongst the students, and was called "the child," because he wore his boyish

See also: Pre-Raphaelites VIEW IMAGE LIST "Born into an affluent middle class family in Southampton, Millais was a naturally talented artist with an engaging, unspoiled personality. He became the youngest pupil ever at the R.A. Schools when he arrived there aged 11, and the youngest to complete the course five years later. Technically he was extremely competent and was the star pupil, but he was criticized for lacking a certain breadth of imagination and vision, which is ironic given his future as a Pre-Raphaelite. "For the Summer Exhibition of the R.A. in 1849 he painted Isabella , a story of passion, jealousy and murder from a poem by Keats after a story by Boccaccio. Millais depicted all these elements in Italianate style with intricate symbolic metaphors worked through both colors and objects: the passion flower hints at Isabella's true nature, while the blood orange she holds shows her passion will end in spilt blood, and a hawk ripping a white feather to pieces indicates the cruel nature of her two brothers, who go on to murder her lover. The work was generally well received, particularly for its early Renaissance quality of composition, colorings and slightly flat perspective. "The following year Millais painted himself into the furore that surrounded his picture

Sir John Everett Millais P.R.A.
Millais was a child-prodigy of such exceptional promise that he was admitted to the Royal Academy Sehools at the age of eleven. Ruskin records an anecdote of his youthful talent which suggests that he could draw with complete adult assurance at the age of seven. Unlike most other aspiring painters he was given every encouragement in the pursuit of his chosen career, his parents even moving from their home in Jersey to allow him to study in London. His amazing facility of hand and eye, coupled with the most thorough and vigorous training available, allowed him to accomplish astonishing feats of technical proficieney. He maintained a consistently high degree of accurate representation, for which he was accorded the unstinted admiration of the public.
The contrast between his Pre-Raphaelite paintings and his later works shows with startling clarity how greatly Pre-Raphaelitism must have offended popular taste. The comparison can be made directly in at least one instance, between the dream-like The Bridesmaid of 1851, and the same subject dating from 1879, which is a conventional portrait treatment of his second daughter Mary as bridesmaid to her older sister. Millais himself had foreseen this situation early on, and is recorded as advising intending purchasers to buy his pictures while he was still working for fame rather than for a wife and children. It can surely be no coincidence that Millais' change in style occurs almost precisely at the time of his marriage. Ruskin was appalled by Millais' 1857 Academy picture A

Sir John Everett Millais
Sir John Everett Millais, one of the best known and most successful Victorians painters, died in 1896. He had been a close friend of Sir Henry Tate (1819-98) and, from the outset, took an active part in his plans to create a National Gallery of British Art. Millais wrote to Tate in 1892, 'I would accept, without a moment's hesitation, the land offered for your gallery. The situation is splendid and open, with that grand old river in front. Nothing in Kensington would be as good. There will be grumblers, whatever you decide on. Don't listen to them. I am proud to think that my dear old friend, Sir William Harcourt, is the man who will have done this great service to the National art'. One year after Millais' death Tate told the Daily Mail 'Photographs of the building in a forest of scaffolding were submitted to the late Sir John Millais, my deeply regretted friend, shortly before his death, and he endorsed in pencil the two words "Quite satisfied"'. (John Guille Millais, The Life and Letters of Sir John Everett Millais, 1899, vol.2, pp.369-70)
The statue of Millias was installed in the garden on the east side of the Tate Gallery in November 1905. Despite the King's involvement in the project, frequently visiting Brock's studio to assess the progress of the sculpture, there was no formal unveiling. The statue, however, did not go unnoticed by the Press. The

MILLAIS, SIR JOHN EVERETT
Pre-Raphaelite movement. His early work shows a painstaking rendering of minute detail and great clarity. His Christ in the Carpenter's Shop (1850; Tate Gall., London) was attacked because of its realism, but his reputation was soon established. He was created a baronet in 1885, and in 1896 he became president of the Royal Academy. John Ruskin was a close friend and champion of his work until 1855 when Millais married Mrs. Ruskin, after the nullification of her marriage. His work is well represented in many British galleries. His Portia is in the Metropolitan Museum. See biographies by J. G. Millais (1899), M. H. Spielmann (1899), A. L. Baldry (1902), and A. Fisk (1923). Top Search the Library Books

I may honestly say that I have never placed on idle touch on canvas; and that I have always been honest and hardworking; yet the worst pictures I ever painted in my life are those into which I threw the most trouble and labour, and I confess that I should not grieve were half my works to go to the bottom of the Atlantic-if I might choose the half to go." Biography Millais was born in Southampton in 1829, the son of John William and Emily Mary Millais. His father came from a well-known Jersey family, and his mother nee Evamy came from a prosperous family of Southampton saddlers. Emily Millais had been married previously to one Enoch Hodgkinson, by whom she had two sons. About the Artist
Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti The three young students were disappointed with the teaching at the Royal Academy and the style of High Victorian art which prevailed at the Academy. They found that the greatly stylised and idealistic manner of painters such as Frederic Leighton had deprived art of a true spirit and its capacity to move spectators. In their efforts to promote a new type of art, less reliant on classicism and idealism, the three painters, together with others, founded the Isabella Walker Art Gallery ). The movement was in reality only a loose formation, which did not last more than a few years, despite the fact that the founding members and artists continued to paint in a similar manner even after they had resigned and departed from a common goal.
