Roberto Sebastian Antonio Matta Echaurren was born in Santiago, Chile in 1911. He studied architecture at the Universidad Catolica in Santiago. In 1933 Matta traveled to Paris and worked for two years as a draftsman in the Paris studio of famed architect Le Corbusier. While visiting his aunt in Madrid, he met Federico Garcia Lorca and Pablo Neruda. Neruda introduced Matta to Salvador Dali and Andre Breton. Impressed by Matta's drawings, Breton invited him to join the Surrealist group in 1937. Influenced by his association with the Surrealists and by Marcel Duchamp's theories of movement and process, Matta began to explore the realm of the subconscious and to develop an imagery of cosmic creation and destruction.

(Continued) His early works, the Psychological Morphologies and the Inscape series, were organic in style and content. By 1939 the war in Europe drove Matta to exile in New York, where he was an important influence on the young New York School artists, especially in his use of automatist techniques.

Matta produced illustrations and articles for Surrealist journals such as Minotaure . During this period he was introduced to the work of many prominent contemporary European artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp The first true flowering of Matta's own art came in , when he moved from drawing to the oil painting for which he is best known. Spanish teachers looking for Spanish-language resources for Matta may visit the page Roberto Matta y el Surrealismo , a Surrealist painter of Latin American heritage, achieved what few artists from his region had accomplished before him, i.e., international status and recognition. Born and raised in Chile and educated by the Jesuits, Matta left his native country for Spain in his early twenties to explore his ancestral roots. Living an itinerant life in North and South America as well as Europe, Matta established connections with many renowned writers and artists of the twentieth century. Exhibited in major museums worldwide, Matta is usually presented as a "European" painter, based on his time spent in Italy and Paris. In February 2004, the McMullen Museum of Art will mount Matta: Making the Invisible Visible the first exhibition to critically focus on Matta’s claim to having made the "invisible visible" and to make visible the Latin American influences that lend his work its distinct aesthetic.

MATTA Roberto Echaurren MATTA (1911 - 2002) Born in Santiago, Chili, Roberto Matta is an important member of Surrealism’s second period. He did not think of himself as a painter, but rather as an architect or astrophysicist. A silent man, Matta was even known to criticize members of his movement who took too many “plastic” liberties. To Matta, painting was the means by which one accomplished something, the tool to be used. He would spend time with famous scientists like Hubert Reeves and other astrophysicists who would help him go beyond the surface, the invisible, to identify force and matter in their original form. He would play a decisive role in influencing young American painters in the forties, especially Abstract painters. The Matta retrospective held at Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1985 only confirmed his market value, which continues to climb.

Morphologie du Ciel, oil, 1996
Melodia-Melodio , carborundum etching, 1995
La Dulce Acqua Vita , carborundum etching, 2002 Chile has made a relatively small impression on the world cultural scene. In literature, the country claims two Nobel laureates, Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral. Isabel Allende has made her literary mark, albeit from her United States residence. Raoul Ruiz' sometimes memorable films are seen around the world and the late Claudio Arrau was acknowledged to be one of the great pianists of his generation.
In painting, only one Chilean name surfaces that is of international note - Roberto Sebastian Antonio Matta Echaurren (1911-2002). Matta studied architecture in Chile and then worked in the studio of architect Le Corbusier in Paris in the 1930's. Andre Breton invited him into the Surrealist group in 1937, rather late in their history which was largely truncated by the advent of World War II. Matta was influnced by Dali and Duchamp, among others. Freudian concepts of the unconscious mind were central to the style, technique, and imagery advanced by the Surrealists at that time. Matta subscribed to the Surrealists' "automatic" writing and painting in which it was thought the artist's unconscious would be revealed.

roberto matta first exhibited in the Julian Levy Gallery, New York in 1940. The 40 s signified the reentry of the human figure in matta s compositions
http://www.rogallery.com/matta_roberto/matta-biography.htm
ROBERTO MATTA (1911 - 2002 ) Roberto Antonio Sebastián Matta Echaurren was born on November 11, 1911 in Santiago, Chile. Matta was educated in his native country as an architect and interior designer at the Sacré Coeur Jesuit
College and at the Catholic University of Santiago, from 1929-31. In 1933 he became a Merchant Marine which enabled him to leave Santiago and travel to Europe. From 1933-34 he worked in Paris as an atelier for famed-architect Lecorbusier. At the end of 1934 Matta visited Spain, where he met the poet and playwright Federico García Lorca, who through a letter, introduced young Roberto to Salvador Dalí. Dali inturn encouraged Matta to show some of his drawings to Andre Breton.
Matta's acquaintance with Dali and Breton strongly influenced his artistic formation and subsequently connected him to the Surrealist movement, which he officially joined in 1937. He was in London for a
short period in 1936 and worked with Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy. Matta's employment with the architects of the Spanish Republican pavilion at the Paris International Exhibition (1937)

Latin American Masters , Beverly Hills) In a stunning retrospective of Roberto Matta's fluid drawings and paintings from 1936 to 1959, his preoccupation with the terrain of the subconscious and nature's shifting microcosms are closely interwoven. During the 1940s in New York, Matta's Surrealist visions provided much of the connective tissue linking the Surrealist exiles with the burgeoning School of Abstract Expressionism. Known for his compelling, dream-like rendering of space, Matta was born in Chile in 1912. Originally he was trained in his native country as an architect and interior designer. He left for Paris in 1932 to work as a draftsman in the Paris studio of Le Corbousier. Through a letter of introduction from Frederico Garcia Lorca he met Salvador Dali, who suggested he show his drawings to Andre Breton. Matta joined the Surrealists in 1937, and exhibited in the major international Surrealist exhibit that opened in Paris in 1938. Because of the ominous threat of war, Matta left for New York in 1938and produced his strongest works ever. Although a relative latecomer to Surrealism, Matta's eerie depictions of inner space highly influenced pivotal Abstract Expressionist painters such as Arshile Gorky and Robert Motherwell.
