Henri Matisse
During the course of his long and exceptionally varied artistic life, Henri Matisse redefined the basic principles of art and secured a place as one of the masters of the Modern period.
Born in northern France in 1869, he began painting in 1890 and quickly discarded plans for a law career. Studying art in Paris, he began to experiment with form and color, an exploration that flourished over the ensuing years through painting, sculpture, lithography and other forms.
Matisse's stature as the most significant artist in the Paris School by the onset of World War I owed largely to the influence of Leo and Gertrude Stein and their circle. Until his death in 1954, he pursued his interest in the sensual properties of color and his concept of line as a means to explore shape and space.

Explain that Henri Matisse was alive when Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec were. He was born five years after Henri Toulouse-Lautrec but lived much longer. Because Matisse took care of himself and didn't overdo things like Toulouse- Lautrec, he lived a long life of almost 86 years. Matisse began his art career one year after Van Gogh died at the age of 22. He startled the world when he and several other artists had an exhibit of art that took Impressionism one step farther. Colors were very bright and in some cases totally different from the actual colors. For instance, faces had blues and greens in them. (See Woman with the Hat, 1905) People said that it looked like wild beasts painted the paintings. The French word for "wild beasts" is "Fauves." This is how Matisse became known as the father of Fauvism. Henri chose the simple lines of a child and pure color to help us read what he thought.

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was born in Le Cateau, a town of textile mills that supplied fine cloth to the Paris fashion trade. He spent most of his adult life in Paris and Nice in the south of France. In 1952 just before his death he helped set up an exhibition in Le Cateau Town Hall, and gave the town a collection of his drawings, scuptures, and paintings - as well as photographs and other documents. This is the only gallery collection selected by Matisse himself - and the only museum dedicated to any artist where they conceived the presentation of their own works. Who is Henri Matisse?
Henri Matisse was considered one of the 20th centuries most influential modernist artists whom Paris critics dubbed the King of Fauves.
His determined quest to infuse his paintings with vibrant and sun-drenched colours and to explore new ways of interpreting shapes, images and mediums, garnered Henri Matisse the distinction of becoming one of the most influential artists of his time. He and a small group of fellow artists that included Maurice de Vlaminck and Andre Derain shocked the austere Paris art world with their radical ideas and what most art aficionados considered was their total lack of discipline. But Matisse persisted. In turn Paris art critics christened his small group “the fauves”, or the “wild beasts” of the early 20th century art movement. Fauvism, though short-lived, opened the floodgates for modernist artists to express their own visions and paved the way for other forms of modern expressionism like “cubism”. Henri Emile Benoit Matisse was born in 1869 in the northern French region of Picardy. The eldest of 3 sons, he was a sickly child and suffered from what doctors diagnosed as chronic appendicitis. Anna Heloise Gerard, descendant of a long line of well-to-do tanners, doted on and over-protected her son. She also showed an artistic bent and it was from her that Henri acquired his love of shapes, textures and vibrant colours. She was the first to advise her son not to adhere to the “rules” of art, but rather listen to his emotions.

He originally studied law in Paris, from 1887-9, returning home to work as a law clerk. He also attended early-morning classes at a local art school. In 1890 he was bed ridden for an extended period after appendicitis. His mother bought him some oil paints and he began to paint during his recovery. He persuaded his father to let him study art and moved to Paris, where he enrolled at the Academie Julian.

About the Artists: Henri Matisse, 1869-1954
History recalls Henri Matisse as one of the giants of twentieth-century art. Readily identified with the fauvist (wild beasts) art style and later with paper cut-outs, Matisse continued experiments with color and line throughout his art career. Pablo Picasso, in a rare acquiescence to the abilities of another artist, considered Matisse an artistic equal. A variety of artworks by both artists recall or reflect the work of the other.

The greatest master of modern sophistication, Henri Matisse, learned from the manner in which children draw how to see natural objects in an innocent way, as if perceiving them for the first time. Matisse was the artist who fulfilled the national tradition of French painting in the modern movement. When cubism entered the arena as a new alternative to the art of the past, what entered with it was the analytical, cerebral quality in modern art. Fauvism, on the other hand, represented in its first stage the victory of sensualism, which particularly through color transmitted its message with a strong direct impact. Fauvism developed in the oeuvre of Matisse into a classical art. A balance was achieved between color, expressing light, and form, presenting objects as pure forms in a two-dimensional manner without any illusionism.

His first teachers were academically trained and relatively conservative; Matisse's own early style was a conventional form of naturalism, and he made many copies after the old masters. He also studied more contemporary art, especially that of the impressionists, and he began to experiment, earning a reputation as a rebellious member of his studio classes. Matisse's true artistic liberation, in terms of the use of color to render forms and organize spatial planes, came about first through the influence of the French painters Paul Gauguin and Paul C©zanne and the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, whose work he studied closely beginning about 1899. Then, in 1903 and 1904, Matisse encountered the pointillist painting of Henri Edmond Cross and Paul Signac. Cross and Signac were experimenting with juxtaposing small strokes (often dots or "points") of pure pigment to create the strongest visual vibration of intense color. Matisse adopted their technique and modified it repeatedly, using broader strokes.

conventions without the express written permission of Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. “…send me a white cane,” Henri Matisse exhorted his assistants when he completed the compositions for his illustrated book Jazz. The artist was nearly blinded by working with intense color under the brilliant Mediterranean light of the south of France ( ). To protect against glare, he used overstated hues and intense blacks. To overcome incapacitating illness, he invented a new medium, “drawing with scissors.” Cutting shapes from prepainted paper, he formed the contour and the internal area of a shape simultaneously, eliminating as he put it, “the eternal conflict between drawing and color” ( ). These cutouts, begun as compensation for illness (duodenal cancer) that confined him to a wheelchair, became another creative peak near the end of the artist’s life.
