HENRI
MATISSE Matisse's true artistic liberation, in terms of the use of color to render forms and organize spatial planes, came about first through the influence of Gauguin, Cezanne and van Gogh, whose work he studied closely. Then, Matisse encountered the pointillist painting of Edmond Cross and Signac. By 1905 he had produced some of the boldest color images ever created. His images of dancers, and of human figures in general, convey expressive form first and the particular details of anatomy only secondarily. Matisse extended this principle into other fields; his bronze sculptures, like his drawing reveal the same expressive contours seen in his paintings. Although intellectually sophisticated, Matisse always emphasized the importance of instinct and intuition in the production of a work of art. He argued that an artist did not have complete control over color and form; instead, colors, shapes, and lines would come to dictate to the sensitive artist how they might be employed in relation to one another. He often emphasized his joy in abandoning himself to the play of the forces of color and design, and he explained the rhythmic, but distorted, forms of many of his figures in terms of the working out of a total pictorial harmony. Matisse is regarded as one of the great formative figures in 20th-century art.
Henri Émile Benoît, leader of the Fauve group, was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in northern France on December 31, 1869. The son of a middle-class family, he studied and began to practice law. In 1890, however, while recovering slowly from an attack of appendicitis, he became intrigued by the practice of painting. In 1892, having given up his law career, he went to Paris to study art formally. His first teachers were academically trained and relatively conservative; Matisse's own early style was a conventional form of naturalism, and he made many copies after the old masters. He also studied more contemporary art, especially that of the impressionists, and he began to experiment, earning a reputation as a rebellious member of his studio classes.

Artist
Henri Matisse is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century and, along with Pablo Picasso , one of the most influential modernist painters of the last century. Matisse began studying drawing and painting in the 1890s. A student of the masters of Post-Impressionism, Matisse later made a reputation for himself as the leader of a group of painters known as Les Fauves. An ironic label given to them by a critic (it means "wild beasts"), the name reflected Matisse's aggressive strokes and bold use of primary colors. In 1905 Matisse gained sudden fame with three paintings, including Woman with the Hat , purchased by the wealthy American ex-patriot Gertrude Stein . Beyond painting, he worked with lithographs and sculpture, and during World War II he did a series of book designs. Later in his career he experimented with paper cutouts and designed decorations for the Dominican chapel in Vence, France. Along with Picasso, Matisse was considered one of the world's greatest living painters throughout his life. His other works include "The Dance" (1910), "Red Fish" (1911) and "The Moroccan in Green" (1913). Other painters include Claude Monet Raphael and Frida Kahlo

Interesting Matisse kept painting and making works till his death. Though Matisse suffered from cancer and had to stay in a wheelchair for the last years of his life, this did not stop him from continuing what he always loved to do.
Matisse trained young artists during his lifetime, but refused to accept payment because he wished to maintain the right to quit teaching at any time.
Matisse is best known for his paintings and cutouts, but starting in the 1920s he also produced over 50 bronze sculptures including the Seated Nude (1925).

Matisse's art diverged from the Cubist style in his freer use of color and greater attention to the decorative effects of line and pattern. A leader of Fauvism , a movement that relied on the exaggerated, non- naturalistic use of color, Matisse later began to exhibit a more austere style closer to Cubism. Bathers by the River, a work completed in several stages between 1909 and 1916, is a supreme example of this phase in Matisse's art. It is considered one of his greatest masterpieces. The painting began as one of three panels commissioned for the residence of a Moscow collector. The first version was a stylized rendering of a pastoral scene showing five nude females near a waterfall. After the collector decided not to purchase that

Henri Matisse BACK
He worked in brilliant colour at Collioure (1905) with Derain and each painted a portrait of the other. Although his palette was somewhat subdued during the 1910s, e.g. Pond at Trivaux (c. 1916) or Painter and his Model (1916), he was as little touched by Cubism as Picasso was by Fauvism. He was deeply impressed by an exhibition of Near Eastern art in Munich (1910) and visited Morocco. His love of oriental fabrics and ceramics is reflected in the exotic decorative details and character of the great Odalisques of 1920-5. From 1917 he lived at Nice, with a visit to the U.S.A. and Tahiti in 1930-1. He worked on the chapel at Vence (1949-51); his other late works include the remarkable collages of cut-out, gouache-coloured paper shapes arranged in terms of expressive abstract rhythms, e.g. I'Escargot (1953). excerpts taken from Thames and Hudson, Dictionary of Art and Artists
An excerpt from Matisse by Gerard Durozoi
In 1941, after his operation, Matisse had the idea of constructing some kind of edifice as a gesture of gratitude towards the Dominican sisters who had nursed him. But it was not until 1947 that the project resurfaced. One of his former models, who had since become Sister Jacques-Marie, showed him a sketch for a stained-glass window she had conceived for the extension of the Dominican chapel at nearby Foyer Lacordaire. Matisse offered his advice, but soon formulated his own ambitious plans for an entirely new building, with the aid of Frere Rayssiguier, a student-architect, and the architect Auguste Perret.

CONTEXT FOR THE CREATION OF JAZZ
"My curves are not crazy." - Henri Matisse, Jazz, 1947
In 1943, while convalescing from a serious operation, Henri Matisse began work on a set of collages to illustrate an, as yet, untitled and undecided text. This suite of twenty images, translated into "prints" by the stenciling of gouache paint, became known as Jazz-considered one of his most ambitious and important series of work.
The years of World War II were a difficult time for Matisse and his family. He had separated from his wife Amelie in 1940 when he moved to the south of France. His wife and his daughter Marguerite were each tried and then jailed by the Gestapo for their parts in the French Resistance movement. Marguerite was tortured and then deported to the Ravensbruck concentration camp but was miraculously rescued before arriving there. The artist's two sons, Pierre and Jean were living in New York and Paris, respectively, and communication with them was intermittent at best during the war years. Jean, a sculptor, was also a Resistance fighter, training soldiers in marksmanship in his studio.
Matisse himself was recovering from a bout of intestinal cancer and, unable to stand, spent great periods of time in bed. After a risky operation, Matisse remarked to his friend Albert Marquet in 1942, "Truly, I'm not joking when I thank my lucky stars for the awful operation I had, since it has made me young again and philosophical which means that I don't want to fritter away the new lease on life I've been given." It seems clear that, despite the illnesses, the change in direction in Matisse's work was already under way. This was, in fact the only period of his life when all of his various media were at play toward the same goals. Still, despite his optimism, there was pain and difficulty ahead of him as he was forced to wear a metal corset for weeks at a time. Further, he was plagued by gallstones, liver problems, deteriorating vision and, worst of all, terrible insomnia.

Nancy Doyle
So-called primitive art meant the work of an untrained painter such as the 19th-20th century artist Rousseau, as well as sculpture from other parts of the world, such as Africa. Many late 19th (and early 20th) century European artists were drawn to certain qualities about this 'primitive' art, such as its non-imitative nature, its powerful and inventive stylized forms, and its more direct and honest quality, which contrasted with their impression of the overly refined art of the European academic tradition. Specifically, Picasso was drawn to the Catalan sculpture of his native Spain, as well as African sculpture, and Gauguin was attracted to the simplicity and beauty of Tahiti, where he filled his canvases with bright, independent colors - colors which followed the laws of painting, rather than the imitation of external nature; painting which sought not to imitate nature, but to illuminate the artist's inner reality.
Another visual device used by the Fauves was the black contour, sometimes solid, and sometimes broken. They also sometimes left a "white" contour around forms, which served to integrate the forms with their surrounding space in the image. Both of these devices contributed to a flat image, as opposed to the illusion of spatial depth used in traditional or academic painting. Another device Matisse developed was using one color over most of the painting surface - often red or deep pink - which covered the 'negative' spaces (the "empty" areas in the painting), leaving only simple linear indications of spatial depth such as perspective lines in, for example, an interior view. The lines of floor, ceiling, wall or even table perspective were left in a minimal fashion - leaving only the flattened objects in space - a bunch of flowers, a person, etc. (See
