Quizá este debate proporcione mayor encanto a sus cuadros, al no saber con certeza dónde situarnos, si ante un realista reconocido o ante un impresionista por reconocer. Manet nace en París el 23 de enero de 1832; su padre, Auguste, era jefe de personal del Ministerio de Justicia y su madre, Eugénie-Désirée, era hija de un diplomático, es decir, formaba parte de una familia alto burguesa. Sus primeros pasos artísticos los daría a temprana edad, cuando inicia su etapa escolar. Será su tío materno, Edmond-Edouard Fournier, quien le enseñe las primeras nociones y acompañe al pequeño Edouard y a su inseparable amigo Antonin Proust al Museo del Louvre . Pero los niños prefieren dibujar las cabezas de sus compañeros de clase a tener modelos inanimados, por lo que el curso de dibujo en el que se han matriculado les decepciona bastante. Acabados los estudios en el colegio Rollin, el padre de Manet desea que su hijo inicie la carrera judicial para llegar a ser un prestigioso abogado. Pero Edouard prefiere presentarse al examen de ingreso en la Academia Naval, donde es rechazado. Su deseo de navegar es tan grande que se alista en un buque mercante, en el que llegará hasta Río de Janeiro. De regreso a París, intenta nuevamente ingresar en la Academia Naval, obteniendo el mismo resultado. Estaba claro que Manet no deseaba ser abogado, por lo que solicitó el permiso paterno para iniciar estudios de pintura. El padre accede de mala gana y Manet frecuenta el taller de

On his return he first studied in Couture's studio (1851), where his independence often infuriated his master. For six years he was an intermittent visitor to the studio, constantly taking leave to travel, and going first to Cassel, Dresden, Vienna and Munich, and afterwards to Florence, Rome and Venice, where he made some stay. Some important drawings date from this period, and one picture, "A Nymph Surprised." Then, after imitating Couture, more or less, in "The Absinthe Drinker" (1866), and Gustave Courbet in "The Old Musician", he devoted himself almost exclusively to the study of the Spanish masters in the Louvre. A group was already gathering round him James Whistler , Legros, and Fantin-Latour haunted his studio in the Rue Guyot. He married Suzanne Leenhoff (1830-1906), a musician and his family's music teacher, in 1863. Edouard Manet is considered to be the father of impressionism. With the advent of lithograph photography, no longer was painting a necessary element in chronicling reality. A new movement in art began to surface beginning with the work of Edouard Manet. His originality lay in his choice of subjects from the modern world and in his bold, vigorous brushwork qualities that made him an inspiration to the Impressionists. Édouard Manet who is sometimes called the first Impressionist showed that capturing subtle effects of light can be accomplished as effectively by the juxtaposition of bright, contrasting colours as by shadings of intermediary tones. To avoid studying law, as his father wished, he went to sea. Eventually, Manet overcame his father’s opposition to his becoming an artist and from 1850 to 1856 he studied in Paris under Thomas Couture, a well-respected academic painter. However, his real artistic education was gained through studying the works of the Old Masters in the Louvre and on extensive travels he made to visit some of the great galleries of Europe.
