Edouard Manet
French Painter
There is only one true thing: instantly paint
what you see. When you've got it, you've got it.
When you haven't, you begin again. All the rest is humbug. Edouard Manet was born on January 23, 1832 in Paris. He is often identified with the "Impressionists," and was influenced by them. However, because of the Paris art world's generally hostile regard for Impressionism , he chose not to exhibit with them. He preferred to show his work in the more conservative exhibitions sponsored by the French government.
Manet learned to paint in the traditional style, but his work became more spontaneous after his exposure to Claude Monet and the other "Impressionists." He used expressive outline, severe lighting contrasts, bold color and rich texture to portray the world around him.
Manet scandalized the people of Paris with a number of works containing nudes painted in bold poses with direct, outward gazes. While it was popular during his time to paint scenes from the Bible and ancient history, Manet painted scenes from 19th Century history, including one work featuring the execution of Emperor Maximillian of Mexico in 1867.

After traveling in Germany, Austria and Italy to study the Old Masters, Manet finally found the answer to all his questionings and aspirations for light and truth in the paintings of Velasquez and Goya at the Louvre. Edouard Manet was a French painter whose work inspired the impressionist style, but who refused to so label his own work. His far-reaching influence on French painting and the general development of modern art was due to his portrayal of everyday subject matter; his use of broad, simple color areas; and a vivid, summary brush technique. Overview
It is hard to image a time when Paris was without broad, tree-lined streets or when the life of the city did not interest French artists. Yet this was the case in 1850 when Edouard Manet began to study painting. Young artists could expect to succeed only through the official Academy exhibitions known as Salons, whose conservative juries favored biblical and mythological themes and a polished technique. Within twenty-five years, however, both Paris and painting had a new look. Urban renovations had opened the wide avenues and parks we know today, and painting was transformed when artists abandoned the transparent glazes and blended brushtrokes of the past and turned their attention to life around them. Contemporary urban subjects and a bold style, which offered paint on the canvas as something to be admired in itself, gave their art a strong new sense of the present. (continue) chronology

Edouard Manet's Olympia
When Edouard Manet's painting Olympia is hung in the Salon of Paris in 1865, it is met with jeers, laughter, criticism, and disdain. It is attacked by the public, the critics, the newspapers. Guards have to be stationed next to it to protect it, until it is moved to a spot high above a doorway, out of reach. With Olympia, Manet rebels against the art establishment of the time. Taking Titian's Venus of Urbino as his model, Manet creates a work he thinks will grant him a place in the pantheon of great artists. But instead of following the accepted practice in French art, which dictates that paintings of the figure are to be modeled on historical, mythical, or biblical themes, Manet chooses to paint a woman of his time not a feminine ideal, but a real woman, and a courtesan at that. And he paints her in his own manner: in place of the smooth shading of the great masters, his forms are painted quickly, in rough brushstrokes clearly visible on the surface of the canvas. Instead of the carefully constructed perspective that leads the eye deep into the space of the painting, Manet offers a picture frame flattened into two planes. The foreground is the glowing white body of Olympia on the bed; the background is darkness.

The Puzzle of Olympia
by Phylis A. Floyd Fig. 1 Edouard Manet, Olympia Fig. 2 Edouard Manet, When Edouard Manet sent Olympia (fig. 1) to the salon of 1865 he fully expected it to achieve the acclaim denied (fig. 2) two years earlier. Although the jury admitted Olympia into the exhibition, critics, to Manet's shock and surprise, again found cause to rebuff it. As the artist complained to Charles Baudelaire shortly after the exhibition opened: abuses rain upon me like hail. I have never before been in such a fix. . .I should have wished to have your sound opinion of my work for all this outcry is disturbing and clearly somebody is wrong. After the Salon rejection of in 1863 and the scandal that followed its exhibition at the Salon des Réfusés, why would Manet, who had been deeply shaken by those events, invite the same scurrilous attacks by taking up another "modern" nude in a contemporary, erotic context? "What continues to astonish after so many years" observed George Heard Hamilton in 1969, "is that Manet, bitterly resenting the notoriety which had brought him . . . should have again offered the public the same affront: this was the same model, still nude."

biography Édouard Manet (January 23, 1832 - April 30, 1883) was a noted French painter. One of the first nineteenth-century artists to approach modern-life subjects, his works bridged the gap between Realism and Impressionism Edouard Manet was born in Paris, France; his mother, Eugénie-Desirée Fournier , was the goddaughter of a Swedish prince, and his father, Auguste Manet , was a French judge. He wanted Édouard to also pursue a career in law, but Édouard wanted a career in the arts. His uncle, Charles Fournier , encouraged him to pursue painting seriously; he often took young Édouard to exhibitions at the Louvre From 1850 to 1856, after failing his naval examinations, Manet went to study under academic painter Thomas Couture . He would copy the Old Masters in the Louvre in his spare time. He spent some time visiting Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, during which he absorbed the influences of the Dutch painter Frans Hals and the Spanish artists Diego Velasquez and Francisco José de Goya Manet , in imitation of the current style of Realism initiated by Gustave Courbet , painted many everyday subjects like beggars, cafés, bullfights, and other events and scenery. He produced very few religious, mythological, or historical paintings.

In the summer of the following year, perhaps seeking relief from the harsh criticism he had received, Manet left Paris for Boulogne-sur-Mer , a city on the north Atlantic coast of France, where he painted marine subjects and still lifes of fish. He finished the still lifes there, but did not complete the marine paintings, including Steamboat Leaving Boulogne, until he returned to Paris. These works represent a breakthrough for the artist; although his bold, flat brushwork outraged his critics, it inspired his Impressionist colleagues in the next decade. horizon line and is filled with a wall-like expanse of water against which various ships are represented. Edouard Manet (1832-1883) is the father of modern painting and his Olympia is now part of the hallmark of art history. It is hard for us to see this picture, knowing all that we now know all the art that has come after and fully appreciate just how strikingly different Manet was. The uproar at the Salon was a frontal assault on the established methods of painting and the Salon was "the field of battle" according to Manet. This was not just an evolution of thought but a revolution against the sensibilities of the time. The critics fought back and so did the public Manet was intensely hated, scoffed at, ridiculed and made the butt of jokes. One of the few more sympathetic reviews read as follows: Jean Ravenel L'EPOQUE "M. Manet Olympia"
