Edouard Manet was born into the ranks of the Parisian bourgeoisie on January 29, 1832. His Mother, Eugenie-Desiree Fournier, was a woman of refinement and god daughter of Charles Bernadotte, the Crown Prince of Sweden. Edouard's father, Auguste Manet, was a magistrate and judge who hoped that Edouard would someday follow in his footsteps, but Edouard was destined to follow another path.
Although well educated, Manet did not particularly excel within the academic environment but he showed a propensity toward drawing and the arts. His Uncle Charles Fournier encouraged Manet's appreciation for the arts and often took him and his childhood friend, Antonin Proust, on outings to the Louvre. In 1850 after serving in the merchant marines, Manet entered the studio of Thomas Couture where he studied until 1856. He was influenced by the old masters, particulary Velazquez and Goya , but Manet reasoned that ones art should reflect ideas and ideals of the present rather then the past. So disagreeing with Diderot's theory that great art only reflected the costume of the past, Manet sought instead to follow the advice of Baudelaire...to depict a contemporary realism, to be "

Death Year : 1883 Country : France Edouard Manet was born in Paris. His father was a government official, and although Edouard showed early artistic talent, he was destined for the Navy until he failed the entrance examinations. He then began to study art with Thomas Couture, whose academic teaching did not satisfy Manet. He began to study the works of the Venetian Renaissance masters, the Dutch seventeenth-century artists and of the Spaniard Velázquez. He studied these first in Fountainbleau, then in the Louvre, and eventually on trips abroad to Holland, Germany, Italy, and Spain where, in 1865, he discovered Goya. His earliest works, by their delight in clear colors, strong lines and large flat areas, are strikingly similar to Spanish art, particularly in his silhouetted figures which, if cut out, would leave a background in monochrome and a clearly defined outline. These striking paintings are well delineated and so rounded in contour that they seem almost to project outwards from the immediate foreground. From the very beginning of his career, Manet startled the public. His "Luncheon on the Grass" (1863), in which a nude woman sits besides two fully dressed men, based on a classical work by

After having failed the entrance examination to the Naval College , he leaves France towards Rio in 1848 as a cadet on a training ship. Back in France, his father authorizes him to devote himself to painting , towards which he had felt attracted since his childhood. He compels him to follow a solid formation at the School of Fine Arts in the Workshop of painter Thomas COUTURE , where he was to remain during six long years. Although he had suffered from Couture's method of teaching which required "ideal and impersonality", he will keep for him all his lifetime a certain respect. "I paint what I see, and not what others like to see" Edouard MANET used to say to oppose to the academic doctrine, intending to assert his own subjectivity and the importance of the vision of the painter compared to the conventional rules.

On leaving school at the age of 16, he joined the navy. He would have preferred to study painting, however, and in 1850 his father at least allowed him to enroll as a pupil of the history painter Thomas Couture, with whom he remained for six years. Manet's revolutionary Absinthe Drinker , submitted to the Paris Salon of 1859, was rejected by the jury, though the great Romantic painter Eugene Delacroix protested on his behalf against their decision. In 1861, influenced by Spanish pictures and fasinated by Spanish subject-matter, Manet offered The Guitarist to the Salon. It was accepted, and praised by the poet and art critic Theophile Gautier. Another poet-critic, Charles Baudelaire, was a friend of the young painter, and wrote an article on him in 1862. At the Salon des Refuses of April, 1863, Manet showed Le Dejeuner sur l'Herbe (Luncheon on the Grass) , for which nude and clothed figures had posed in the studio. The reaction of the public to this was a mixture of hilarity and indignation. Only one month before, however, an exhibition of Manet's paintings had made a profound impression on

Interesting In those days it was very difficult for women to get into the circle of artists. Manet's first contacts with Impressionist female artists Berthe Morisot and Eva Gonzalès was with them as a model.
A lot of critics liked to criticize the work of Manet. For instance he was accused of incompetence for painting 'A Bar at the Folies-Bergere'. Critics were astonished by his obvious "mistake": the customer was missing from the painting.

In 1863 Manet who had already received favorable critical notice entered work in the Salon des Refusés, but his painting Le Déjeuner sur l'Herbe drew a savage response from the critics. Going against contemporary ideas of art, Manet brought the modernist point of view into direct conflict with conventional standards, and his intentions were misunderstood.

Edouard Manet is regarded as the inventor of modern art and the godfather of Impressionism. He is also the last figure of the great classical art. He wasn't the Impressionist but young painters adopted his dynamic style of painting, sharp natural lighting and bold colouring. Manet was a shocking artist; his career is studded with scandals that he did not seek to create. He rejected traditional, academic style of painting and conventional themes. His famous work - Le dejeuner sur l'herbe evoked a scandal. The subject of the picture threw many of those who saw it. The painter was alluding to the masterpiece of Renaissance - Giorgione's Country Concert. Manet's painting brought younger artists flocking to him. In their admiring eyes he was a confident force to the new. Following the scandal of the Le dejeuner sur l'herbe, Manet prompted an even more violent controversy with Olympia , quoting Titian's famed Venus of Urbino.

It is difficult to imagine that Manet was ill when he painted this work, indeed he died within a year of completing it. It is the facade of a house at Rueil, just outside Paris, in which he stayed for the summer of 1882. He was there to recover from illness and he was morose and despondent, which is reflected in letters written during the time.
Despite these handicaps, he wished his time there to be productive and in those letters he complained that bad weather restricted his painting activity, particularly out of doors. However, this painting and others from the same time do not reflect emotional or physical disparity.
The size of the canvas is comparatively large, implying that his ambition and means to execute substantial work had not diminished. It is also signed and dated, indicating that he considered the work finished. The paint is handled with astonishing exuberance and energy, especially in the grassy clumps beneath the tree, in the foliage and in the curving pathway. The light is shimmering and bright and the view is charged with vitality and life.

Edouard Manet 1832-1883 Italian version Edouard Manet Edouard Manet (1832-1883), was a French painter who helped break tradition by using his subject matter primarily for visual effect, rather than for telling a story.
    Impressionism revolutionary
Since Manet's time, painting has been dominated by this concern with the importance of the picture itself, not its storytelling function. Manet is often identified with the impressionist style of painting, and he and the impressionist artists influenced each other. However, Manet refused to exhibit his works in impressionist shows. The public considered impressionism revolutionary and treated it hostilely. Manet preferred to seek popular success by exhibiting in conservative shows sponsored by the government.
    Paris and Mr.Couture
Manet was born in Paris. From 1850 to 1856, he studied with the skillful but traditional artist Thomas Couture. Couture taught Manet to love technique for its own sake. From Couture, Manet learned how to use outline expressively, how to obtain a lively effect with broken brushstrokes, and how to achieve strong lighting with a minimum of tones. Manet wanted to use this technical knowledge to portray modern life in a spontaneous way. But Couture and other conservative French painters preferred sentimental storytelling.
    Female nude
In 1863, Manet shoked the people of Paris with his painting Luncheon on the Grass. This picture shows a female nude at a picnic with two men in modern clothing. Many people felt that the panting was indecent. In 1865, Manet's Olympia, a painting of a female nude, created an even greater scandal. The public objected to the nude's bold pose and to the picture's severe lighting contrasts and flat silhouetted forms.
