Russian painter and designer, with Mondrian the most important pioneer of geometric abstract art.
Born near Kiev; trained at Kiev School of Art and Moscow Academy of Fine Arts; 1913 began creating abstract geometric patterns in style he called suprematism; taught painting in Moscow and Leningrad 1919-21; published book, The Nonobjective World (1926), on his theory; first to exhibit abstract geometric paintings; strove to produce pure, cerebral compositions; famous painting White on White (1918) carries suprematist theories to absolute conclusion; Soviet politics turned against modern art, and he died in poverty and oblivion.

  • Malevich, Kasimir b nr. Kiev, Feb. d Leningrad, May Russian painter, designer, and writer, with Mondrian the most important pioneer of geometric abstract art . He began working in an unexceptional Post-Impressionist manner, but by 1912 he was painting peasant subjects in a massive ‘tubular’ style similar to that of L©ger , as well as pictures combining the fragmentation of form of Cubism with the multiplication of the image of Futurism The Knife Grinder , 1912, Yale Univ. AG). Malevich, however, was dissatisfied with representational art or—as he put it—fired with the desire ‘to free art from the burden of the object’. He was a devout Christian, with mystical leanings, and he thought that by abandoning the need to depict the external world he could break through to a deeper level of meaning and ‘swim in the white free abyss’ (he often used the analogy of flight and space when discussing his paintings). His first abstract work was a backdrop for the Futurist opera Victory over the Sun , produced in the Luna Park Theatre, St Petersburg, in December 1913; his original drawing (now in the Theatrical Museum, St Petersburg) shows a rectangle divided almost diagonally into a black upper segment and a white lower one. He claimed that he made a picture ‘consisting of nothing more than a black square on a white field’ as early as 1913, but Suprematist paintings were first made public in Moscow in 1915 (there is often difficulty in dating his work and also in knowing which way up his paintings should be hung, photographs of early exhibitions sometimes providing conflicting evidence).

Kazimir Malevich was born near Kiev Ukraine . His parents, Seweryn and Ludwika Malewicz, were ethnic Poles, and he was baptised in the Roman Catholic Church . His father was the manager of a sugar factory. Kazimir was the first of fourteen children, although only nine of the children survived into adulthood. His family moved often and he spent most of his childhood in the villages of Ukraine beside sugar-beet plantations, far from centers of culture. Until age 12 or 13 he knew nothing of professional artists, though peasant art had surrounded him in childhood. He delighted in peasant embroidery, and in decorated walls and stoves. He himself was able to paint in the peasant style. He studied drawing in Kiev from 1895 to 1896. Black Square, 1915, Oil on Canvas

In 1919 he began to explore the three-dimensional applications of Suprematism more Sixteenth State Exhibition in Moscow, which focused on Suprematism and other nonobjective styles. Malevich and his students at Vitebsk formed the Suprematist group Unovis. From 1922 to 1927 he taught at the Institute of Artistic Culture in Petrograd, and between 1924 and 1926 he worked primarily on architectural models with his students. Kazimir Severinovich Malevich: Taking in the Harvest Oil on canvas, 72 x 74.5 cm. Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Taking in the Harvest , also known as Taking in the Rye , is one of the most "radical" expressions of the Cubo-Futurist movement ( Gray 150). Though short-lived (lasting perhaps for a year or two), this movement is noteworthy for two main reasons:
    • Cubo-Futurism was a movement unique to Russia most of the Russian artists of the period passed through the Cubo-Futurist phase before moving on to completely non-objective art.
Combining elements of French Cubism, Italian Futurism, and Neo-primitivism, Cubo-Futurism was more or less a natural stepping stone for Russian art as it began to free itself of European influences and once again established itself as a leading force in the development of the world art. As one of the most creative and inspired artists of the Russian avant-garde, Malevich was well qualified to become one of the leaders of the Cubo-Futurist movement. Taking in the Harvest expresses particularly well both Malevich's artistic temperament and the essence of the Cubo-Futurism. The color of the painting may be what strikes viewers most forcibly. The unnatural, bright metallic coloring is unexpected and, compared to other works of the time, perhaps a little shocking. If the color isn't surprising enough, however, the geometric quality of the figures certainly is at least from a "realistic" point of view. Though the painting is unusual, there is nothing incongruous or inharmonious about its form and composition. In fact, a kind of "cubo-dynamic rhythm" reigns here; one senses that the figures and the bales of rye depicted on the canvas really belong there. Every movement, every bend of a body, every curve fits aesthetically as well as metaphorically. The simplicity of the work is also remarkable and, together with other Russian neo-primitivist paintings, harkens back to folk art and the icon painting tradition. Even the absence of perspective (except as indicated by the scale of figures) is reminiscent of icons. The impetuosity and the energy of
