Kasimir Malevich, "Suprematism"
Under Suprematism I understand the supremacy of pure feeling in creative art. To the Suprematist the visual phenomena of the objective world are, in themselves, meaningless; the significant thing is feeling, as such, quite apart from the environment in which it is called forth. The so called "materialization" of a feeling in the conscious mind really means a materialization of the reflection of that feeling through the medium of some realistic conception. Such a realistic conception is without value in Suprematist art .... And not only in Suprematist art but in art generally, because the enduring, true value of a work of art (to whatever school it may belong) resides solely in the feeling expressed. Academic naturalism, the naturalism of the Impressionists, Cezanneism, Cubism, etc all these, in a way, are nothing more than dialectic methods which, as such, in no sense determine the true value of an art work.

Biography:

Kasimir Severinovich Malevich was initially influenced by French Impressionist while studying in Moscow from 1902 to 1905. After moving to Paris in 1912, Malevich switched to Cubism, and formed his own derivation called Suprematism, a more ardent and refined approach to Cubism. The movement received capricious reviews, persuading Malevich to experimenting with Minimalism. He forewent painting for sculpture later in his career and helped to mold the Soviet Constructivist era.

Kasimir Malevich (1878 - 1935) Malevich was born near Kiev. His earliest work shows the influence of cubism, distinguished by great clarity of outline. In 1912 he began to develop his own style, known as suprematism (referring to supremacy of feeling over all other artistic considerations). In this completely nonobjective approach he used only geometric elements (rectangles and squares), first with some color and then with white on white. A noteworthy example is his Suprematist Composition: White on White (1918). He claimed that he made a picture consisting of nothing than a black square on a white field. There is often difficult knowing which way up his paintings should be hung. Soviet political that demanded Socialist Realism from its artists turned against his art, he died in poverty and oblivion in Leningrad.

Very important to the work of Irwin and Laibach, right from the beginning Tomaz Hostnik adopted the Malevich cross as a Laibach icon. Overall his influence in abstract art was far reaching in the art world; his work was pioneering but unfortunately suffered under the Soviet regime's disregard for modern art.
Malevich continued to develop his new form of art, gradually adding more geometric shapes and expanding the colour palette to produced more complex works. The aim was not concentrated on the conscious experience of looking at the painting but also hoped to delve into the unconscious as well. Looking beyond the external world as a basis for the art, instead uses objects, shapes and colour to invoke these experiences, inevitably a certain level of tuning in is required. He exhibited the Suprematist works for the first time at '0.10: The Last Futurist Exhibition' which took place in St. Petersburg in December 1915. This exhibition has since been credited in launching two new styles 'Constructivism' along with 'Suprematism', which dominated art in Russia including image design, architecture and theatre until Socialist Realism was forcibly introduced.

A number of experts have been caught out putting Malevich's painting upside down.

Timeline: Pure Abstraction Malevich, Kasimir (1878-1935). Russian painter and designer, with Mondrian the most important pioneer of geometric abstract art. Born near Kiev; trained at Kiev School of Art and Moscow Academy of Fine Arts; 1913 began creating abstract geometric patterns in style he called suprematism; taught painting in Moscow and Leningrad 1919-21; published book, The Nonobjective World (1926), on his theory; first to exhibit abstract geometric paintings; strove to produce pure, cerebral compositions; famous painting White on White (1918) carries suprematist theories to absolute conclusion; Soviet politics turned against modern art, and he died in poverty and oblivion. He began working in an unexceptional Post-Impressionist manner, but by 1912 he was painting peasant subjects in a massive `tubular' style similar to that of Léger as well as pictures combining the fragmentation of form of Cubism with the multiplication of the image of Futurism The Knife Grinder , Yale Univ. Art Gallery, 1912). Malevich, however, was fired with the desire `to free art from the burden of the object' and launched the Suprematist movement, which brought abstract art to a geometric simplicity more radical than anything previously seen. He claimed that he made a picture `consisting of nothing more than a black square on a white field' as early as 1913, but Suprematist paintings were first made public in Moscow in 1915 and there is often difficulty in dating his work. (There is often difficulty also in knowing which way up his paintings should be hung, photographs of early exhibitions sometimes providing conflicting evidence.)

to homepage to images In an attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding these late works, Goto makes a speculative reading of Malevich's life and images against the political and social event of the early Stalinist period. He picks up the story in 1927 when Malevich toured Poland and Germany with an exhibition that marked the high point of his career and was to guarantee his reputation in the West long after he was all but forgotten in the USSR. Even 'as glory falls like rain' upon Malevich, a sense of foreboding seems to have motivated a last will that he wrote in Berlin. As the 1920s concluded Malevich, like many intellectuals, found himself under increasing pressure as articles and exhibitions were criticised or censored and his research post terminated. He was arrested in 1930 and questioned over several months. This period saw the first Five Year Plan introduced and also one of the first major trials of technicians scapegoated for the failures of industry. Stalin turned his attention to the countryside where the Party still lacked complete control and began a programme of forced collectivisation of the farms. The wealthier peasants, termed 'Kulaks', were deported in their millions. During the winter of 1932/3 a terrible famine swept the Ukraine. The cancer that killed Malevich was probably diagnosed in 1933, but his requests to be allowed abroad for treatment were refused. After the assassination in 1934 of his rival, Sergei Kirov , Stalin unleashed the Great Terror which claimed the lives of countless millions including some of Malevich's old students and collaborators. Malevich died on 15 May, 1935.

Kasimir Malevich. Black Square
20 June, 2002 - 30 June, 2003 The Black Square of Kazimir Malevich is one of the most famous creations of Russian art in the last century. The first Black Square was painted in 1915 to become the turning point in the development of Russian avant-garde.
Black Square against white background became the symbol, the basic element in the system of the art of suprematism, the step into the new art. The artist himself created several variants of the Black Square . All four Squares painted by Malevich from 1915 to the early 1930s developed the same idea. Different are not only the sequence and year of creation, but also the color, design and texture. Malevich turned back to the Black Square every time he needed to present his work in an assertive and significant way, often in connection with the most important exhibitions. However he always created a new version rather than copied the previous one.
Malevich for the first time showed his Black Square (now at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow) at the Last Futurist Exhibition 0,10 in Petrograd in 1915. A
