Magritte was born in Lessines , in the province of Hainaut , in 1898, the eldest son of L©opold Magritte, a tailor , and Adeline, a milliner . He began drawing lessons in 1910. In 1912, his mother committed suicide by drowning herself in the River Sambre . Magritte was present when her body was retrieved from the water. The image of his mother floating, her dress obscuring her face, may have influenced a 1927-1928 series of paintings of people with cloth obscuring their faces, including Les Amants , but Magritte disliked this explanation. He studied at the Acad©mie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels for two years until 1918. In 1922 he married Georgette Berger , whom he had met in 1913. The Son of Man Magritte worked in a wallpaper factory, and was a poster and advertisement designer until 1926 when a contract with Galerie la Centaure in Brussels made it possible for him to paint full-time. In 1926, Magritte produced his first surreal painting

Time Transfixed, Oil on canvas 147 x 98.7 cm Joseph Winterbotham Collection, 1970.426 View enlargement The Surrealist Paris , Magritte, whose native city was Brussels , associated with the French Surrealists. Though influenced by the Paris group, he did not share their flamboyant, publicity-seeking tactics. A quiet and thoughtful man who preferred anonymity, he spent most of his career in Brussels, developing a meticulous, realistic painting style that reflected his early training in commercial art, painting false marble and wood paneling for residences. In explaining Time Transfixed, Magritte said: "I decided to paint the image of a locomotive . . . In order for its mystery to be evoked, another immediately familiar image without mystery — the image of a dining room fireplace — was joined." It is in the surprising juxtaposition and scale shift of these common and unrelated images that their mystery and magic arises. The artist transformed the pipe of a coal-burning stove into a charging locomotive, situating the train in a fireplace vent so that it appears to be emerging from a railway tunnel. The tiny engine races out into the stillness of a sparsely furnished dining room, its smoke neatly floating up the chimney, suggesting in turn the smoke of coal in the stove.

- The challenging images in Magritte's works stem from revelations of the mystery of the visible world. "My painting is visible images which conceal nothing; It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable" - said Rene Magritte. René François Ghislain Magritte was born on 21 November 1898 in Lessines, Belgium. Painting had always seemed "vaguely magical" to him. Magritte studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels for two years until 1918. In 1922 Magritte got married with Georgette Berger, whom he had met at the age of fifteen and met again at in 1920. Magritte was inspired by Georgette and she became his model. Magritte produced his first surrealist painting, Le jockey perdu in 1926, and held his first exhibition in Brussels in 1927.

Paintings René Magritte loves to mislead the conscience by paradoxes and contrasts. Examples are plentiful: in The Treachery of Images, Magritte displays a pipe and then tells us in lettering beneath that this is not a pipe. And ofcourse it's true, because it is only a representation of a pipe. Other works include: 'Son of Man', 'Castle in the Pyrenees' and 'The Empire of Lights'.

Interesting Magritte had one certain period that is completely different from all his other works. In the 1940's, when Germany invaded Belgium, Magritte suffered from a depression and decided to start painting what made him happy. Magritte began, inspired by a work from Renoir, painting in an impressionistic style. In the 1950's when the war was long gone, René Magritte returned to his more familiar style.
Less known is Magritte's work with photo cameras. Magritte rejected general accepted photographic aesthetics and often made, on purpose, "failed" pictures.
