Ren é Magritte
R ené François-Ghislain Magritte was born on November 21st, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium, the eldest of three boys. Even at an early age, he liked to draw, and was encouraged to do so by his father Léopold. He later started painting at the age of 12. Régine Bertinchamp, Magritte's mother, suffered from depression; one night, while the rest of the family was asleep she fled to go to throw herself over a bridge, into the river Sambre. A few days later, her body is found floating, her face covered by her nightgown; René, who was then only 14, was deeply scarred by the image, which was later going to reappear in some of his works (The Heart of the Matter). At the age of 16, Magritte met Georgette Berger, the girl who would be his future wife and creative muse. A year later, in 1914, he left Georgette behind, and he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels to learn how to paint with all the "proper" techniques usually attributed to artists who worked in the figurative style, his plan was to master these techniques before breaking free of them. He would not see his beloved Georgette again until 1920, when by chance he would meet her at an art supply store. While studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, Magritte met many artists who would influence his style, amongst them were

(r u key , Belgian surrealist painter. Strongly influenced by Chirico , Magritte developed a style in which a misleading sort of realism is combined with mocking irony. His paintings are dominated by an intense quietude and restraint, despite a startling juxtaposition of images. Characteristic works, such as The Red Model (1935; Modern Mus., Stockholm), contain elaborate fantasies constructed around commonplace situations.

Click to enlarge The Treachery of Images by Rene Magritte This is the trademark Magritte classic, "The Treachery of Images" or "This is not a pipe," as the sentence in French below the pipe is declaring. Magritte excels in juxtaposing the representational notion of ordinary things with their mundane meaning. Indeed, the "image" of the pipe in the painting does not make it a pipe, no matter how realistically it is rendered.

Ren© Magritte
Magritte was born in Lessines, in the province of Hainaut, in 1898, the eldest son of L©opold Magritte, a tailor, and Adeline, a milliner. He began drawing lessons in 1910. In 1912, his mother committed suicide by drowning herself in the River Sambre. Magritte was present when her body was retrieved from the water. The image of his mother floating, her dress obscuring her face, may have influenced a 1927-1928 series of paintings of people with cloth obscuring their faces, including Les Amants, but Magritte disliked this explanation. His art shows a more representational style of surrealism compared to the style seen in works by artists like Joan Mir³ . In addition to fantastic elements, his work is often witty and amusing. He also created a number of surrealist versions of other famous paintings. This is one of a group of food paintings which the Liverpool-based painter and poet Adrian Henri made in the mid-1960s. Although the carefully arranged and succulently painted cuts of meat reference the traditional genre of the still life, Henri disturbs conventional expectations by placing them against a plain white background. The effect is to make them seem faintly macabre or surreal (an intention conveyed in the title's homage to one of the greatest twentieth-century surrealists). But the meat is also painted in a cool and distant manner. One might be looking at the artwork for a British Meat advert.

    Review Summary
Each episode of Portrait of an Artist offers an intimate peek at the life and work of an important figure in the world of art. Not just a dry discussion of the major works, this is an exploration into the environment that produced the artist and influenced his or her work. From interviews with family and friends, to short trips to an artist's favorite haunts, no stone is left unturned. In this particular episode, viewers explore the life and work of Magritte, a Belgian surrealist who enhanced bizarreness in the objects of everyday life. ~ Rob Ferrier, All Movie Guide

Rene Magritte, (Belgian, 1898-1967) Rose et Poire. Les Moyens d'Existence, Rose and Pear. The Means of Existence Etching 6 1/4 x 4 1/4 in. (15.9 x 10.8 cm.) Gift of Louis Shorenstein Ren¨ Magritte attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels from 1914-1918. In 1922 he worked as a graphic artist mainly drawing motifs for wall-paper and designing posters, only devoting his free time to serious painting. In 1926, influenced by Giorgio de Chirico?s Song of Love , Magritte began his first surrealist work. Magritte has his first exhibition in 1927 at the gallery Le Centaure, Brussels. In his work, Magritte toyed with everyday objects, human habits and emotions, placing them in foreign contexts and questioning their familiar meanings. He suggested new interpretations of old things in his deceivingly simple paintings, making the commonplace profound and the rational irrational. In 1929 Magritte moved to Paris and became acquainted with much of Surrealist theory, including their romanticized notions of scandal, crime and disguise. However, three years later disgusted by the superficial methods of the Parisian Surrealists and their dependence on dreams, drugs and magic for vision, Magritte moved back to Brussels.
