This page provides a brief biography and useful links on Charles Rennie Mackintosh, whose design style and graphic imagery have inspired the look of our Website and publications. Born in Glasgow on 7 June 1868, Charles Rennie Mackintosh trained as an architect in a local firm and studied art and design at evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art. For 20 years he worked as an architect/designer in Glasgow where all his best known work was created and where much of it still remains, yet he left Glasgow in search of success and died in London in virtual obscurity. It is perhaps ironic that he was given so little recognition at the time by his native city, for Glasgow of the late l9 th and early 20 th centuries was the centre of a progressive movement in painting and the decorative arts. At art school, Mackintosh and his friend and colleague Herbert MacNair met the artist sisters Margaret and Frances Macdonald. The four artists collaborated on designs for fumiture, metalwork and illustration, developing a distinctive imagery of weird, abstracted female figures and metamorphic lines reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley. Their style earned them the nickname of the 'Spook School' and their work, particularly in England, was treated with suspicion because of its decadent influence of Continental art nouveau. The majority of Mackintosh's work was created with the help of a small number of patrons, within a short period of intense activity between 1896 and 1910. Francis Newbery helped Mackintosh to secure the prestigious commission to design the new

CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH: A Brief Chronology
His major achievements include his masterpiece the Glasgow School of Art, the villas Windyhill and The Hill House, Scotland Street School, and a series of city-centre tea room interiors. In common with many of his contemporaries he believed that the architect was responsible not just for the fabric of a building, but for every detail of its interior design. He was one of the most sophisticated exponents of the theory of the room as a work of art, and created highly distinctive furniture of great formal sophistication. He was also a highly talented painter, producing exquisite flower paintings, and late in life, a series of striking landscapes of the South of France. Did you know that Charles Rennie Mackintosh has 11 celebrated main architectural sites in Glasgow? with the addition of commissioned work which is not open to the public. The first is of a main door and entrance hallway in one of the main squares of Glasgow - Blythswood Square. It was inserted in 1909 about 10 years after Blythswood Square was completed. If you go to the square, take a look at all the main doorways, I'm sure if you know your Charles Rennie Mackintosh work then you should be able to recognise the door and entrance. If not drop me a line and I'll tell you!
More of his commissions can be found in Glasgow. Another example, Craigie House (1872) is a private residence, currently office space at 6 Rowan Road, Bellahouston Park. This area is know as Dumbreck. In 1892 The Glasgow Firm, "Honeyman and Keppie", entrusted their young architect, John Keppie with a series of alterations to the entrance and library but it is believed judging by the wood carvings it is seen as Charles Rennie Mackintosh's work, at this time he was the architects assistant!
An original mural by Charles Rennie Mackintosh can also be found inside the premises at 91 Buchanan Street, which was the Clydesdale Bank (1896) and the building was originally designed as a Tearoom.

38. Charles Rennie MacKintosh And The Glasgow School Of Art
An illustrated discussion by JK Gillon of the influences on the design of the Glasgow School of Art.
http://gillonj.tripod.com/MacKintosh/
Charles Rennie MacKintosh and the Glasgow School of Art JK GILLON In 1896 a competition was announced, by the Board of Governors of the Glasgow School of Art, for the erection of a new building with a limited budget intended as 'sufficient to erect only a plain school'. The Honeyman and Keppie entry, designed and drawn by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, was successful. Pevsner describes it as 'a remarkably bold choice...because it was perceived as being Art Nouveau and lacking in the overt stylistic references to various historical periods utilised so freely by the other competitors'.
The reins of power in the competition were ultimately in the hands of Francis Newberry, the Director of the School of art, and Mackintosh's former teacher and friend. The importance of Newberry in terms of encouraging Mackintosh's creative individuality was an important factor in both his education and the commission for the School. Financial constraints led to the building being constructed in two stages, the first from late 1897 to 1899, and the second (western) portion from 1907 to 1909.
The completed building is a towering rectangular block with almost no decoration, an austere statement and bold break away from the traditional methods of architectural adornment. Its lack of obvious historical references, the apparent over-scaling of the windows, the lack of classical references, the absence of sculptural embellishments, the asymmetrical facade and the severity of the structure caused much adverse comment at the time of its construction.
