born June 7, 1868, Glasgow died Dec. 10, 1928, London Scottish architect and designer who was prominent in the Arts and Crafts Movement in Great Britain. He was apprenticed to a local architect, John Hutchinson, and attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art. In 1889 he joined the firm of Honeyman and Keppie, becoming a partner in 1904. Glasgow School of Art Although Mackintosh was nearly forgotten for several decades, the late 20th century saw a revival of interest in his work. The stark simplicity of his furniture designs, in particular, appealed to contemporary taste, and reproductions of Mackintosh chairs and settees began to be manufactured. The Mackintosh House in Glasgow was reconstructed and opened to the public as a museum in the late 1970s. Charles Rennie Mackintosh , the son of a police superintendent, was born in Glasgow in 1868. He was educated at the Allan Glen's School before starting his architectural apprenticeship. He attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art and in 1889 joined the firm of Honeymen and Kepple.
Although Mackintosh's architectural output was fairly small he had a considerable influence on European design. Especially popular in Austria and Germany, Mackintosh's work was highly acclaimed when it was shown at the Vienna Secession Exhibition in 1900. It was also exhibited in Budapest, Munich, Dresden, Venice and Moscow.
An outstanding exponent of the Art Nouveau style, Mackintosh was responsible for the Glasgow School of Art (1897-99), its library block (1907-09), the Cranston Tearooms and Hill House in Helensburgh. His work, often done with his wife, Margaret Macdonald , included interior design, textiles, furniture and metalwork.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) architect, designer and artist is celebrated around the world today as one of the most significant talents to emerge in the period which spans from the mid 1890s to the late 1920s. Most of his surviving work can be found in or around Glasgow Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born one of eleven children in the Townhead area of Glasgow, close to Glasgow Cathedral. From these beginnings, he has become one of the most celebrated architects of his generation. He met Margaret Macdonald, his future wife, at Glasgow School of Art and much of what can be seen in the buildings and collections involves their artistic collaboration. You will also witness his masterful handling of light and space and see many of the well-known pieces of furniture which have themselves become icons. Mackintosh took his inspiration from our Scottish traditions and blended them with the flourish of Art Nouveau and the simplicity of Japanese forms. Much of his work has survived. It can be seen today alongside that of his close collaborators in the group known as "The Four" and the other artists and designers who collectively created "The Glasgow Style".

Charles Rennie Mackintosh:
'A Modern Man' For over 20 years the Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh worked almost exclusively in Glasgow where all his best-known work was created and where much of it remains today. It was only in later life that Mackintosh left Glasgow in search of greater success, ending his career in London where he died in relative obscurity at the age of 60. It is perhaps ironic therefore that Mackintosh was given so little recognition by his native city during his lifetime. This was to change and by the end of the 20th century, some 70 years after his death, he was finally lauded as the father of "Glasgow Style". A MODERN MAN takes a critical look at Mackintosh's life and artistic career and the importance of the friends and patrons who provided him with regular work when it matter most. Influential critics, including the designer Terence Conran, give their views on Mackintosh's current reputation. All are unanimous in their appreciation of "the complete designer". Together, they recognise his importance as an influential architect of the 20th century and acknowledge that Charles Rennie Mackintosh was very much A MODERN MAN. Read customer reviews

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (b. Glasgow, Scotland 1868; d. London, England 1928) While enrolled at the Glasgow School of Art, Mackintosh developed an artistic relationship with Margaret MacDonald, Frances Macdonald and Herbert McNair. Known as "The Four", they exhibited posters, furnishings, and a variety of graphic designs in Glasgow, London, Vienna and Turin. These exhibitions helped establish Mackintosh's reputation. With a design philosophy solidly rooted in Scottish tradition, Mackintosh disregarded the architecture of Greece and Rome as unsuitable for the climate or needs Scotland. He believed that a revival of the Scottish Baronial style, adapted to modern society would meet contemporary needs. His buildings clearly demonstrate this belief. Mackintosh created buildings notable for the elegance and clarity of their spatial concepts, the skillful exploitation of natural and artificial lighting, and skillful detailing. He felt that each design should work as a whole to which each carefully contrived detail contributes.

http://www.scotcities.com/renniemack.htm
This page is dedicated to the architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh in his home city of Glasgow, where he lived and worked in the years surrounding the dawning of the twentieth century. Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born in 1868 in Parson Street, Townhead, Glasgow, where his Martyrs Public School (left) still stands. His novel architectural creations in Glasgow were all completed before his 40th birthday. He devoted his later years to interior design, furniture and visual art. Like Mackintosh's architecture, his works of art are exceptional in their sheer originality.
Glasgow Herald Building The very narrow Mitchell Street was the home of the Glasgow Herald newspaper from 1895 until 1980 when new publishing practices created a requirement for more modern premises.
The lower floors were used as production space where the newspapers where dispatched from platforms open to the street. The upper floors, which have less of an industrial feel about them, were used for the editorial and commercial side of the operation.
When Glasgow was awarded the title "UK city of Architecture 1999", the block was altered and extended to create a modern Architecture and Design centre, the Lighthouse.
