Welcome To This Page On The Life,World And Work Of L.S Lowry
If you are an art lover who likes the experience of being captured in time with the artist, you will appreciate the work of English painter Laurence Stephen Lowry. Many of his paintings depict the grim industrial landscape of a smoggy industrial 1930's England brilliantly blended with colours and figures which result in a timeless art. Saying that,he was also a versatile artist who covered many styles of brushwork in his career as you will see if you research him a little. Please contact me if you have any questions or areas of interest you would like addressed, you will find the link above.

About the Lowry
The Lowry art gallery is set in the heart of the regenerated Salford Quays. It is a highly original, distinctive and unusual combination of stainless steel and glass. It has 2 theatres, each with its own unique atmosphere, a Promenade and Galleries. The interior of The Lowry covers an area larger than 5 football pitches. It is located on what once was Pier 8, with the Manchester Ship Canal still lying on two sides of its triangular site. The third side looks out over the newly constructed square. The spectacular Lifting Footbridge across the canal links The Lowry to Trafford Wharfside, Manchester United Football Club and the

66. Lawrence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976)
A brief biography of LS lowry, famous for his drawings of industrial scenes in Lancashire and Cumbria incorporating matchstick men .

'Lawrence Stephen Lowry'
Laurence Stephen Lowry was born in Old Trafford, Manchester (UK), on November 1st, 1887. He moved to Pendlebury in Salford with his parents in 1909, where he was to live for nearly 40 years. Despite the inexorable link between Lowry and working class life, he did not grow up in poverty. He had few friends at school and passed no exams, but it was decided that he should enrol at Manchester School of Art which he did in 1905, for evening classes. He joined Salford School of Art for evening classes in 1915, which is where his work on the matchstick figures developed. He had his first job in 1904 where he 'drifted into' office work as a clerk with a Manchester accountant. In 1910 Lowry took a job with a property company in Manchester as a rent collector, and stayed with them for the next 42 years. He spent much of his working life walking the poorest streets of Manchester and its surrounding area, and this is where his vision formed. 'Coming from the Mill' Lowry first exhibited in 1919 at Manchester Art Gallery. By 1945 Lowry had had 3 exhibitions and was starting to establish himself. By the 1950s the Royal Academy had invited him to join and his fame and success were assured. Lowry always claimed loneliness and dissatisfaction, but one wonders to what degree he really craved anything different. As he said himself, 'Had I not been lonely, none of my work would have happened.' He deprived himself of many of life's simple pleasures - living in isolation - and the price he effectively paid to be a great artist was his happiness.

Lawrence Stephen Lowry
(Sorry! Under Construction!)
British painter, born in Manchester. He worked as a clerk until his retirement at 65, using his spare time for art lessons and paintings. He exhibited regularly in Manchester from the 1920s, when he began his most characteristic works, bleak industrial landscapes and towns dotted with matchstick figures. These first attracted serious attention in the 1940s. A large retrospective exhibition was held at the Royal Academy in 1976. A Manufacturing Town (1922, oil on panel, Science Museum, London)
It is currently on display at the Museum's Picture's gallery until February 1997. Top of Page Mitsuharu Matsuoka's Home Page

"Coming out of School" by Lawrence Stephen Lowry A deeply sensitive and creative man, Lawrence Stephen Lowry was born in Stretford in Manchester in 1887. He showed the first signs of artistic ability at a young age, but came from a typical working class background and was only able to afford art lessons when he began working as a clerk. At the time of the 1891 census he was living in Barton Upon Irwell, Stretford, Lancashire, with his parents, Robert and Elizabeth. With that information in hand, I set out to look for his census record in the Lancashire 1891 Census CD set from British Data Archive I decided to have a look at www.TheGenealogist.co.uk and searched for Lawrence Lowry in the 1891 census transcripts, which found him at Barton Upon Irwell, Stretford, Lancashire. The transcript also told me that the census page could be found on CD 16, RG12 / 3157 / Folio 108a . From here I decided to find Lawrence Lowry on the 1901 census, so I went to www.rootsuk.com

"Going to the Match" by Lawrence Stephen Lowry
The painting by L.S. Lowry that Stuart Clarke describes as "the best and in a sense the only painting of football ever" can be found below. Its setting is outside Burnden Park , home of Bolton Wanderers F.C. from 1895 until 1997 before they moved to Reebok Stadium . In what was then the largest disaster in FA history, 33 people died in crowd trouble on March 9, 1946 . After Hillsbourough , it was recognized that the stadium was no longer suitable for top flight soccer.
The indespensible and pro-nostalgia Football Ground Guide to Burnden Park has some photos of the old ground:
