Franz Ferdinand remixed by El Lissitzky?
Previously, on cityofsound's Infographic Music Video series: Rokjsopp, Plaid Legowelt and Pleix And now, Franz Ferdinand roar into view, with a fabulous Constructivist/Bauhaus-inspired promo for This Fire , of which MTV.com says: "A mixture of constructivist graphics and the opening titles of Hitchcock's Niagara. The idea is to mimic what happens in the opening frame of a comicbut absolutely not 'American Dream' stuff of the Batman and Superman cartoons. It's as if the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. went to war in the '50s and the soviets won and redesigned all the comics." Not a particularly good description. It's a bit more pure El Lissitzky to be honest, crossed with a hefty early 80s aesthetic. Its fab. The tremor in his flick when frontman Alexander stamps his foot is hilarious. And rather great. I'm still not sure whether I'm a fan or not, but this I like. MTV.com: Franz Ferdinand: This Fire video [PC/Windows Media, medium quality]
Domino Records: Franz Ferdinand: This Fire video [Real, quite small]

IFilm: Franz Ferdinand: This Fire video [Real, Quicktime, medium]

Click the picture to see annotations What is image annotation? El Lissitzky "Beat the Whites with the Red wedge", a 1919 lithograph is a perfect and famous example of using abstract art for very clear political message. Text in Russian (left side) "Klinom krasnim" (Meaning: "With Red Wedge") Red is left: political color and position of communists Red was a standard symbol of revolution Edge was asupremtist symbol of something new Painted during the Civil War in Russia (1917-1921) between Reds and Whites White was a standard color of anti-revolutionary forces. Circle was s supremtists symbol for unchangeable. Text in Russian (right side): Bey Belych (Meaning: "Beat Whites") White is right: political color and position of anti-revolutionaries. posted by Tagson at 9:55 AM

About
Text over image was used by painters in most of the cultures most of the times. This blog explores the tradition of Text-Over-Image in painting using software FotoTagger to add easy-to-hide comments to digital images. My view of paining totally changed, when I’ve started attaching annotations to images. People rightly so do not notice things that cannot describe easily, and having no tools to point and describe parts of paintings made noticing details profession, rather than enjoinment.

Another flash piece, done by the Getty Museum a few years ago, contains a chronology that showcases the work of El Lissitzky and the highlights of his life. The overall site goes into rich detail about his work and has tons of examples, that popup to larger details. In this particular case, it seems like the site could have been done in HTML just as easily. Nothing that I can see, makes flash a better choice - unlike some of the other museum sites I have commented on in the past. Technology aside, this is a a great way to get an overview of El Lissitzky and his work and see how it was a product of the times and geography. Lissitzky was a master of communication and information organization. He was skilled across multiple media and his design work feels as fresh and lively today as it was during his life.

Ann Arbor: UMI Research Press, 1982, p.125. 5. Davis referred to this work years later in a 1926 biographical sketch in the following way: "Executed one of the first ~modernistic~ interior decorations, since destroyed, for a modern cafeteria." (Letter to Katherine Dreier, October 1926). 6. Collection of the Societe Anonyme: Museum of Modern Art 1920, p. xv. 7. The Society of Independent Artists Exhibition contained 2,500 works by 1,200 artists from 38 states and countries. The Brooklyn Museum show, a more carefully selected affair, contained 308 works by 106 artists from 23 countries. Therefore, even though its size was smaller, the geographic range is almost equally as broad, and considering that the Brooklyn show was largely due to the efforts of one woman and the 1917 exhibition was run by a committee and basically unrestricted, the Brooklyn show represents a far more herculean effort. 8. According to Bohan, the "telemuseum" was fabricated too late for inclusion in the Brooklyn Museum but was installed in the Anderson Galleries part of the show.

Ann Carter has taken advantage of the open elevator shaft and a captive up and down audience to fashion an exceptional site specific work in this continuing series of (yes!) freight elevator installations. Colored droplets adorn the entire back wall of the shaft and are illuminated by a boxed light source within the elevator itself. Visitors can watch the drops float down past them as they move slowly up from the ground floor to the project room above. The soft colors of the tear-shaped drops are offset by the bright neon quality of the lighting in a foreboding nightscape (POST, Downtown).
Installation of altered cards (l.) and an inaugural performance (r.) were part of "Shikishi."
This celebration of the New Year, that of the Rabbit, was inaugurated by a performance combining music, prayer and archery and an exhibition of Shikishi , or coloring cards. These cards were sent out to more than one hundred people including artists, priests, politicians and homemakers who they were asked to express their thoughts on the end of the millennium. The results are a medley of drawings, paintings, calligraphy and poetic thoughts that are delightful to meander through. Ranging from the colorful pseudo-ceramic plate by artist Keiko Fukasawa to a dense, ominous drawing by the performer Oguri, the palette is as broad as the perspectives on any new millennium could be (
