Occupation Artist Lazar Markovich Lissitzky help info Hebrew ... December 30 ), better known as El Lissitzky ), was a Russian artist designer photographer ... typographer , and architect . He was one of the most important figures of the Russian avant garde , helping develop suprematism with his friend and mentor, Kazimir Malevich , and designed numerous exhibition displays and propaganda works for the former Soviet Union . His work greatly influenced the Bauhaus Constructivist , and De Stijl movements and experimented with production techniques and stylistic devices that would go on to dominate 20th century graphic design Lissitzky's entire career was laced with the belief that the artist could be an agent for change, later summarized with his edict, "das zielbewuŸte Schaffen" (The goal-oriented creation). A Jew , he began his career illustrating Yiddish children's books in an effort to promote Jewish culture in Russia, a country that was undergoing massive change at the time and had just repealed its anti-semitic laws. Starting at the age of 15, he began teaching; a duty he would stay with for the vast majority of his life. Over the years, he taught in a variety of positions, schools, and artistic mediums, spreading and exchanging ideas at a rapid pace. He took this ethic with him when he worked with Malevich in heading the suprematist

See also: Constructivism In 1909 the Italian Futurists published their manifesto in the Parisian newspaper, Le Figaro. Their ideas filtered to Russia and the artist Malevich and his followers, one of whom was Lissitzsky, responded with ideas of their own. Lissitzsky studied engineering and architecture from 1909-1914. After being a painter, illustrator and designer of Soviet flags, he taught with Malevich at Vitebsk and at art workshops in Moscow. He arrived in Berlin in 1921 and set up exhibitions of art by the post-revolutionary avant-garde, working also as a writer and designer for international magazines. His achievements acted like a campaign to forge links between artists in Russia and in the West, between Weimar's De Stijl and Constructivism. His own Proun paintings, Proun being an acronyrn signifying "for the new art", express his vision of a world of physics inspired by modern spiritualist thought. They were produced at the same time as Victory Over the Sun, which suggests similar concerns. His work was intended to be a catalyst to encourage "the broad aim of forming a classless society". His publications include Die Kunstismen, with

El Lissitzky
Russian painter and designer, born Lazar Markovich Lissitzky, trained as architect in Darmstadt and Moscow in 1909-14. His first art work was illustrating Jewish Passover stories in an idiom close To Chagall's. In 1918, he was appointed to the art panel of the new Commissariat of Enlightenment. In 1919, Chagall invited him to teach graphics and architecture at the Vitebsk art school hut soon Lissitzky came under Malevich's influence there and developed his own form of Suprematism. He called his paintings and prints Proun, probably an acronym for 'project in affirmation of the new', describing this work as 'the interchange station between art and architecture'. He worked on festival decorations and produced the best-known abstract revolutionary poster, Beat the White's with the Red Wedge (1919).

Elizar Morduchivitch Lissitzky was born on November 23 1890 in a village Pochinok several miles southeast of Smolensk into a well-to-do Jewish family. He spent his childhood in Vitebsk, and in his secondary school days he lived with his grandparents in Smolensk. His father was a westernized Jew with the ideals typical of the turn-of-the-century assimilated Jews : He acquired his place in the society by accepting a secular job, and as soon as he had enough money, he emigrated to the United States and asked his wife to join him. Lissitzky's mother was much more orthodox than his father, and first she went to ask the rabbi for advice, and he told her to stay. So the father came back, and El grew up in Russia. His wife Sophie KØppers wrote that he inherited traits of both his parents; actually, Lissitzky's identity consisted of many different parts, and the Eastern Jewish tradition contributed to a certain extent to this conglomerate.
