News Brushstrokes begins two-year visit to Brown campus Brushstrokes PROVIDENCE, R.I. Pop Art icon
Brushstrokes, shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, right, will be on exhibit on the knoll behind MacMillan Hall for the next two years. The 30-foot work of painted and fabricated aluminum was installed Monday, Dec. 22, 2003. Installation of the 30-foot-high, 3,400-pound Brushstrokes (1996), a work composed of painted and fabricated aluminum, began at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2003. The sculpture is on loan to Brown from the Estate of Roy Lichtenstein and will be on public exhibition for the next two years. It is the fourth in a series of loans facilitated by the Public Art Committee between the University and significant artists, bringing sculptures to public sites throughout campus. Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) is perhaps best known as a painter, and his many paintings based on comic strips epitomize modern American Pop Art. Yet Lichtenstein also created a remarkable and unusual body of sculptural work, including Brushtrokes Brushtrokes In the fall of 2002 the Public Art Committee arranged for a three-year loan of To Tallness a 10-foot sculpture by Isamu Noguchi. It has been on public exhibition on The College Green since January 2003. In addition

Thayer Watkins Roy Lichtenstein's Art
Roy Lichtenstein has been one of the most innovative painters of the late twentiety century. He has tried a multitude of forms and while none could be considered beautiful many were visually interesting and intellectually provocative. He was born in 1923 and taught himself to draw and paint while in high school. He received some formal training in art in a summer program and then entered Ohio State University in 1940 in the fine arts program. He was drafted into the army in 1943 at age of twenty and served until 1946. He re-entered Ohio State in 1946 and completed his bachelor's degree in fine arts that year and went to complete a master's degree in fine arts there in 1949. In the 1950's he taught at the State University of New York at Oswego and later at Rutgers University in New Jersey. In 1961 he began to paint in the style that became known as Pop Art. The following are attempts to create facsimiles of Lichtenstein's art using computer graphics. Those elements, such as the benday dots, which are subject to rule and regularity are ideally suited to computer graphics. When the intent of the artist is to achieve regularity of pattern and placement and uniformity of color computer graphics can more closely achieve the artist's intention than he or she can using physical media. This can be seen clearly in the case of Piet Mondrian, neoplasticism and De Stijl

What is Pop Art?
Pop art, which is shorthand for popular art, is characterized by themes and images taken from popular mass culture. Everyday objects such as cartoons, flowers, road signs or even cans of soup were the inspiration for pop artists. Pop artists worked in a variety of mediums including paintings, sculptures and collages.
About the Artist
Roy Lichtenstein was born on October 27th, 1923 in Manhattan, NY and passed away on September 29th, 1997. Lichtenstein was one of the foremost artists of the American Pop Art movement. Other artists that were part of this movement included Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Indiana and Wayne Thiebaud.

Although you can take a tram tour to see the entire gardens, you will actually see a lot more if you take a self-guided walking tour of the property. A detailed map of the property can be obtained from the Visitors Center after you purchase your admission tickets. The sculptures need to be examined up close to appreciate their true beauty and design details. The sculptures are made from a variety of paint embellished materials including fiberglass, aluminum, steel and bronze.

of City Hall and City Hall Academy
Best known as a painter, Roy Lichtenstein was also a prolific sculptor. He began making sculptural works in the early 1960's, just after his first exhibition of paintings at Leo Castelli Gallery. His earliest sculptures were renderings of utilitarian objects and mannequin style heads, both directly influenced by the representation of commercial techniques in his painting. As his career progressed, Lichtenstein's sculpture evolved with his painting. In the 1980's this convergence of media culminated in his monumental brushstroke sculptures. Evoking the movement and color of paint on canvas, these totem-like works suspend the artist's sweeping brushstrokes in midair. The centerpiece of the exhibition is Element #E from the artist's Five Brushstrokes (1983-1984), shown for the first time in its full-size version. More than 50 feet tall, this sculpture of four colorful brushstrokes was fabricated by the Estate of Roy Lichtenstein for this special loan to the City Hall Academy. Lichtenstein's

From his studio in New York City, Roy Lichtenstein did cartoon inspired paintings that helped launch the Pop Art movement. He was unique in that he developed a new visual language in an avant-garde style that was disruptive to viewers and yet was accessible and popular with them. He also did innovative art work that incorporated many late 20th-century movements and addressed a number of social issues. His thirty-five year career of public recognition was celebrated in 1993-94 by The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York with a large scale retrospective of his work. He was born in Manhattan and went to high school there. By age 14, he was taking art classes at the Parsons School of Design and also studied briefly with Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League in 1939. He then attended Ohio State University where his major influence was Hoyt Sherman, whose figure-ground relationships inspired Lichtenstein's treatment of cliche subjects. In 1943, he was drafted into the Army and served in Europe and then returned to Ohio State, completing his BFA and MFA and then teaching at that campus. From Cleveland, Ohio, he made frequent trips to New York and started to exhibit there in 1949. In the 1950s, he used various techniques of Abstract Expressionism, did figurative work, and like many of his generation, began employing pop art images. But he was searching for a style.

Encyclopedia Article Find Print E-mail Blog It Multimedia 3 items Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997), American painter, sculptor, and graphic artist, best known for his large-scale paintings and prints based on comic strips. Along with fellow American artist Andy Warhol , Lichtenstein was one of the central figures of the American pop art movement in the 1960s, which celebrated popular, commercial images. In the 1950s Lichtenstein painted works in a series of different styles. His subject matter also ranged from reproductions of 19th century paintings to commercial illustrations, and eventually comic strips. His trademark comic-book style dates from 1961, when he began to reproduce not only the subject matter but also the appearance of comic strips printed in newspapers. To accentuate the mass-produced quality of his cartoon heroines and fighter pilots, he imitated the newspaper printing style, using patterns of colored dots to achieve different tones (fewer dots read as a lighter shade), a limited number of colors, and heavy black outlines.

R oy Lichtenstein: American Indian Encounters , presented by the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, premiers at the Montclair Art Museum (MAM) Sunday, October 16, 2005 and will be on view through January 8, 2006. The exhibition will travel to four additional venues across the United States. American Indian Encounters will feature an extraordinary selection of virtually unknown works by Roy Lichtenstein (1923 - 1997), one of the best-known American artists to emerge after 1960. It will bring together over thirty paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures, including a rare sketchbook of American Indian design motifs, thereby juxtaposing two lesser-known periods of Lichtenstein's art-the Cubist abstractions based on 19th century American history paintings of Native American themes, and the "Amerindian" Pop-style works from 1979-1981.
