Forum Articles Pop Art Roy Lichtenstein Biography - 1923-1997
Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York as the son of a realtor and a housewife. Next to Andy Warhol he is considered as THE great artist of the Pop Art movement. The use of familiar subjects like comic strips, bank notes or advertising themes, makes the art of Roy Lichtenstein easily accessible.
His Early Years
Lichtenstein grew up under no specific artistic influence - neither at home nor at school. But at the age of 14 he attended a painting class at Parson's School of Design every Saturday morning. From 1940 to 1943 he studied in New York at the Art Students' League. Then he was drafted to the US Army and served in Europe during War II. Back from the army, Lichtenstein studied at the Ohio State University from 1946 and received his M.A. in 1949. Like Andy Warhol he worked in the commercial graphic business for a while - making designs and decorating shop windows. From 1957 on, he taught at different universities.

Interesting Many contemporary art critics consider Roy Lichtenstein the worst American artist ever, or even say that he is not worthy of the title of artist. But isn't the controversy that he arouses a sign that he truly is a great artist?
When Roy Lichtenstein's son showed him a picture of Mickey Mouse and said to him that his father probably could not paint something that beautiful, the challenge was on. This small incidental moment was one of the factors leading to the development of Lichtenstein's typical pop art style.

REMEMBERING ROY LICHTENSTEIN
SEPTEMBER 30, 1997
NEWSHOUR TRANSCRIPT Paul Richard, art critic for the Washington Post, and Phil Ponce take a look at the life of Roy Lichtenstein who died this week. PHIL PONCE: Roy Lichtenstein, one of the originators of pop art, died yesterday at age 73. He rose to prominence in the 1960's by making art based on cartoons. And whether the images were of romance or war, his works often parodied and poked fun at American life. Paul Richard is the art critic for the "Washington Post." He joins us now for a look at the artist and his work. Welcome, Mr. Richard. First of all, why was Roy Lichtenstein considered an important artist? PAUL RICHARD, Washington Post: Oh, he was a lovable artist, and he left a very strong imprint on 35 years of American painting and American pop culture. And he took elements of pop culture that were really not at all a part of the world ofhigh world of painting and brought them together. PHIL PONCE: So what did he do that hadn't been done before when you talk about making new elements of pop culture, what do you mean?

Roy Lichtenstein

From his first collaboration with Gemini in 1969, Lichtenstein generally worked in series there, exploring variations on a single theme such as in his Cathedral Series (31.1 - 31.8). Sources for both his prints and sculpture are found in commercial art and in modernist traditions, including cubism ( Modern Head #1 [31.23]) and expressionism ( Head [31.72]). Transformed by Lichtenstein, images from fine and commercial art sources coexist, redefining the sources from which art derives. Flattened, schematic forms, dots and stripes, and bright, rich colors are all essential to Lichtenstein's visual effects. His earlier prints, such as the Bull Profile Series (31.44 - 31.49), depended in large measure upon mechanical printmaking methods that yielded flat, unmodulated surfaces. Lichtenstein later explored different techniques and materials: in lithography, he drew directly onto plates and stones; he also explored the woodcut, a process that offers distinctively rich surface effects. For his Expressionist Woodcuts (31.62 - 31.75) and the wood blocks for his "Paintings" Series (31.76 - 31.83), the artist carved all of the essential edges that delineated form while the workshop staff cleared away more generalized areas. During his long relationship with Gemini, Lichtenstein developed increasingly

Pop Art Recommended for Beginner to Intermediate Level Photoshop Users
If you are a fan of pop art then you're probably already well acquainted with the work Roy Lichtenstein . Roy Lichtenstein became one of the leading pop artists of the sixties with his comic-strip paintings. Drowning Girl 1963, shown left, is one of his better known works and is a good example of the design features in his most famous pieces. Notice the thick lines, bold colors, and thought bubble. His work also often included boxed captions and words such as "WHAAM!", commonly found in comic books. Benday dots were Lichtenstein's trademark. Benday dots are a printing process which combines two (or more) different small, coloured dots to create a third colour. Back in the day, pulp comic books used benday dots in primary colours to inexpensively create the secondary colours such as flesh tone. You can create the benday dot effect by using the Colour Halftone filter found in Photoshop , however in this tutorial I'm going to show you a way to create a fantastic looking black and white Halftone Pattern . "Why?", because I like the look of it better.

In 1939 he studied under Reginald Marsh at the Art Students League in New York, and the following year under Hoyt L. Sherman at the School of Fine Arts at Ohio State University, Columbus. He served in the army from 1943 to 1946, after which he resumed his studies and was hired as an instructor. He obtained an M.F.A. in 1949. In 1951 the Carlebach Gallery, New York, organized a solo exhibition of his semi-abstract paintings of the Old West. Shortly thereafter, the artist moved to Cleveland, where he continued painting while working as an engineering draftsman to support his growing family. From 1957 to 1960 Lichtenstein obtained a teaching position at the State University of New York, Oswego. By then he had begun to include loosely drawn cartoon characters in his increasingly abstract canvases. From 1960 to 1963 he lived in New Jersey while teaching at Douglass College, a division of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He met artists such as Jim Dine , Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg , Lucas Samaras, George Segal, and Robert Whitman, who were all experimenting with different kinds of art based on everyday life. In 1961 he began to make paintings consisting exclusively of comic-strip figures, and introduced his Benday-dot grounds, lettering, and balloons; he also started cropping images from advertisements. From 1964 and into the next decade he successively depicted stylized landscapes, consumer-product packaging, adaptations of paintings by famous artists, geometric elements from Art Deco design (in the
