De Stijl
The first issue of a magazine entitled de Stijl was published in 1917. It promoted a
rational, mechanistic, abstract approach to architecture and design. The loose-knit
group was primarily based in Rotterdam, Holland. Its views differed sharply from the
prevailing attitudes of the Wendingen group in Amsterdam, which favored a
handicraft and figurative approach similar to the Arts and Crafts movement in
England. The principal figure of de Stijl was Theo van Doesburg who brought
together architects and artists under the banner head of this magazine. J.J.P Oud
was the dominant architect. He favored a mechanized approach, loosely based on
the popular views of Hendrikus Peter Berlage and Frank Lloyd Wright
Painters included van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian and Bart van der Leck . Although Mondrian and van der Leck were reluctant members since Oud saw architecture as architecture, but rather as a form of expression that had developed independently from architecture, destroying old and naturalistic methods through experimentation. Because of the inherit split of opinion which emerged, de Stijl never achieved the

De Stijl
The De Stijl movement encompassed a new addition in modern art - architecture. This art movement used their artistic talent by designing homes, buildings, and furniture. Unlike most architects during the time, the De Stijl movement signified a new trend, its own name meaning "The Style". Their architecture consisted of mainly solid geometric shapes, such as triangular chairs, and sphere like windows. While their art must have appeared rather radical for the time, their success as architectural artists was phenomenal. The artists maintained close ties to intellectualism and philosophy. The De Stijl movement represented a part of art that also used bold and primary coloring. Their movement indeed represented a favorable style. History The De Stijl movement was originally founded in 1917 by an aspiring group of young Dutch architects. The essential characters included

Artist and ceramic artist. His work shows Asian, Egyptian and other cultural influences. Like the artist Karel Appel, the work of Kamerlingh Onnes possesses a childlike quality, that looks easy, but is not. In his work he has taken away the frills, leaving just a fine simplicity, which he uses to portray the essence of what, in his opinion, 'is'. He does this in a way that can only be done by great artists. He was one of the 'big names' in Dutch twentieth century ceramic art. Kamerlingh Onnes also had his own tile workshop. In this function he designed (amongst others) the decorative sculptures for many of the bridges in Amsterdam.

Dutch painter, decorator, and art theorist. Originally involved in theatre, in 1900 he began painting under the influence of Post-Impressionism and Fauvism . After meeting the painter Piet Mondrian in 1915, he turned to geometric abstraction. He was instrumental in founding the De Stijl group and the avant-garde periodical De Stijl . His advocacy of the geometric style was well received at the Bauhaus , where he taught briefly and influenced Le Corbusier Walter Gropius , and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe . In 1926 Doesburg wrote his manifesto, De Stijl , and in 1930 he moved to Paris and opened a studio, which became the focus of the movement. document.writeln(AAMB2); Images and Media: More on "Theo van Doesburg" from Britannica Concise Stijl, De - Group of Dutch artists founded in 1917, including Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian. UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE BUILDING AND PLANNING 702-232 MODERN ARCHITECTURE B Discuss the influence of De Stijl ideas on 20 th century architecture. T he Dutch De Stijl movement, which lasted for hardly fourteen years from 1917 to 1931, has always had a significant place in the history of Modern Architecture. It became one of the most important theoretical movements in Europe during that time. De Stijl is actually a Dutch art and architectural movement, which encompassed a new tradition of modern art and architecture. The ideas of De Stijl were strongly influenced by Cubism, Dutch Calvinism, and theosophy. The movement was founded in 1917 by a group of Dutch artists and architects, under the leadership of painter Theo van Doesburg. To promote their utopian philosophical approach to aesthetics, they came out with a journal in that same year, also known as De Stijl to present their ideas and designs. The group advocated a new wholly abstract aesthetic style composed solely of the primary colours of yellow, blue and red, combined with straight lines of black gray and white. It is typified by the paintings of Piet Mondrian. The group and movement formally ended in 1931 with the death of van Doesburg in that year. In what follows, an attempt will be made to discuss the influence of De Stijl ideas had on 20

... contact Constructivist Art (Constructivism) is a term used to define a type of totally abstract (non-representational) relief construction, sculpture, kinetics and painting. The work is ordered and often minimal, geometric, spatial, architectonic and experimental in the use of industrial material. The principles of constructivism theory are derived from three main movements that evolved in the early part of the 20th century: Suprematism in Russia, De Stijl (Neo Plasticism) in Holland and the Bauhaus in Germany. Constructivism has been closely associated with architecture and the applied arts from its beginning. These early movements were idealistic, seeking a new order in art and architecture that dealt with social and economic problems. RUSSIA 1910-1921 :: During the early part of this period the Russian avant-garde embraced Cubism and Futurism and moved toward a non-objective art (art without subject) exemplified by Kasmir Malevich's development of Suprematism. In 1913-14 Vladimir Tatlin made and exhibited several relief constructions using industrial materials inspired by the Furturist Umberto Boccioni's vision of 'plastic configurations in space' and the 3D collages seen in Picasso's Paris studio. Tatlin used the term Constructivism to describe these works. The first Constructivist manifesto appeared in 1921 when the First Working Group of Constructivists was formed in Moscow. Other developments principally in Holland and Germany led the movement to expand and become international.
