Hij woonde allereerst in Laren op de Bijenstand 1 en in 1907 huurde hij in Blaricum , voor vier maanden, een kamer in een boerderij. Hij bezat niet meer dan een schilderskistje en wat kleding. In die paar maanden zocht hij geen contact met andere schilders of wereldhervormers die daar waren neergestreken. Ook storrte hij zich niet in het gezelligheidsleven bij Hotel Hamdorff te Laren, in tegenstelling tot zijn collega's. Abstract More than fifty examples of works by Paul Gauguin, Jan Toorop, Bart van der Leck, and Piet Mondrian demonstrate the significant influence of artifacts, newly revealed since the early nineteenth century, from the ancient Orient, that is, Pharaonic Egypt and biblical lands. The individual interest of these artists is analyzed in four monographic chapters, which indicate enough similarities in their interpretation and use of the ancient motifs to constitute a new departure in Orientalism. Their particular approaches bring out as well particular biographical, symbolic, and iconographic insights into their artistic development. As a leading symbolist painter, Gauguin pioneered the revival of sacred art involving old and new myths of Orientalism, which were critical also for Toorop, van der Leck, and Mondrian. Characteristically, all four artists assimilated ancient Oriental artistic conventions as a form of primitivisma return to original purityto create radical images about personal and social renewal. The primordial figured also in the narrative and symbolic synthesis of their art. Stylistically, all of their work became more decorative, two-dimensional, and more compatible with the architectural plane; line and color were released from mimetic servitude, and a pictographic aspect was added.

Bremmer [only available in Dutch] Bart van der Leck (1876-1958), who is primarily known as a member of the movement called De Stijl, was never able to sustain himself from his art alone. On the contrary, he struggled all his life to provide for himself and his family. It was the art educator H.P. Bremmer (1871-1956) who came to the rescue. However, his recurrent financial support of Van der Leck, which lasted for almost 35 years, was not unqualified. The condition was that in exchange for his aid Bremmer would take delivery of the paintings made by Van der Leck during this period. The correspondence maintained by the two men from 1911 to 1953 testifies to this understanding. The 124 surviving letters repeatedly make mention of the arrival of money and the receipt of works of art. Despite the success of this business partnership the two men were never able to achieve a direct and close relationship. The letters explain why. It was because of the insurmountable difference between their positions in the business relationship. From his position of strength, Bremmer exercised influence on the work and reputation of the artist. And while Van der Leck was able to get by in this isolated capacity he knew that it came at the expense of his great ideal, the creation of a new and modern societal art.

The Influence of De Stijl as an Art Movement Brent Coulton The De Stijl movement arose in the aftermath of World War One, and spanned from 1917 to 1932. It was formed by a small artistic group concentrating on representing the world by simplifying art with the use of horizontal and vertical lines as well as right-angled geometric shapes. Only the primary colours were used in conjunction with black, white and grey to create the "abstract expression" of "pure reality" (Meggs 271). Their works involved two and three dimensional art, architecture, text and type face styling to express this two angled and three coloured approach to representing the world. Their work was intended as an expression of the future for a world experiencing enormous change and development both scientifically and politically. The advent of the De Stijl art movement has influenced many facets of the world we live in today. As much as World War One was important to the history of the world, De Stijl was important to the history of art. De Stijl rose from the turmoil of war as a form of expression to meet the needs of a generation living under a new social order. The objective of De Stijl art is an attempt at representing the scientific world by disregarding all complex elements of the natural world. Through the elimination of all but primary colours plus the simplification of all shapes to vertical and horizontal line and right angle geometric shapes, De Stijl invites the viewer to focus on the ultimate basic representation of nature.

In een daarvan ontmoette hij in 1893 de architect in opleiding Piet Klaarhamer, onder wiens hoede hij zich geestelijk begon te ontplooien. In zijn zoektocht naar een hem passende levenshouding schoof Van der Leck vanuit zijn christelijke achtergrond steeds meer op naar de socialistische idealen, die indertijd opgeld begonnen te doen. En hoewel hij zich nooit aansloot bij een politieke partij of een maatschappelijke groepering, bleef hij deze ideologie tot het eind van zijn leven toegedaan.
