Ling Ma Ling Ma is the Reads Editor of Venus Zine . She divides her time between New York and Chicago, both cities in which she roams the streets, still goes to the cinema, and otherwise leads a sedentary lifestyle of freelance assignments and writing fiction. I met Jeff when I first arrived to New York. At the time, I had been reading an article about Jeff Koons in the New Yorker . Jeff and Jeff Koons look a bit alike. They both have "unfinished features that are distinctly American," though Jeff has a deeper brow than Jeff Koons, making him look slightly more unfinished, more Cro-Magnon than Jeff Koons.

Jeff Koons Spends Thanksgiving In Macy's
November 23, 2007 12:23 p.m. EST Anne Lu - Celebrity News Service News Writer New York, NY (CNS) - Artist Jeff Koons has a lot to be grateful for this Thanksgiving. And he wants to show his appreciation by spending time in Macy's. Koons has been invited by the prominent retailer to be its second guest artist in its annual "Blue Sky Gallery" series, Macy's 81st annual Thanksgiving Day parade. It features Koon's 53-foot-tall helium balloon version of his iconic stainless steel Rabbit sculpture. It will be paraded along Broadway on Thursday with Hello Kitty, Shrek, and Dora the Explorer. The "Rabbit" measures 53.5-feet-tall, 26.5-feet-wide, and filled with 4,650-cubic-feet of helium. It is Koon's largest inflatable sculpture so far and uses a new reflective material to replicate the mirror-like finish on the original piece. "Works like Jeff's giant topiary puppy at Rockefeller Center and the Gugenheim in Bilbao, Spain combine monumental style and whimsy, two elements that are inherent in every Macy's Parade Balloon," the parade's executive produce, Robin Hall, said. Macy's is known for sponsoring its annual Thanksgiving parade. It started in Newark, New Jersey and has been on the streets of New York every year since 1929.

This floral sculpture of a West Highland terrier has been located at several sites. It was first created in 1992 for a temporary exhibit in Germany. It was moved to the front of the Guggenheim in 1997 as part of the opening exhibit and was later exhibited in Rockefeller Center in New York City. It is now part of the permanent collection of the Bilbao Guggenheimand some a say a symbol for the city. The Rockefeller Center version stood 43-feet tall and was made of 70, 000 fresh flowers. A stainless steel armature holds over 25 tons of soil watered by an internal irrigation system. While many have affection for a sentimental image such as this (done in flowers no less), the artist's tone is not entirely clear: does he embrace such a kitsch image or is he poking fun? Koons is often considered a latter-day Pop artist; the same kinds of questions have been asked of much Pop art.

As part of a group of artists from the 1980s seeking populist idioms to explore the collapse of art and language, Jeff has emerged as the most important international artist of his generation. His work has been the subject of many exhibitions both in the United States and Europe, including major museum retrospectives organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 1992/1993. In May of this year Koons mounted a new floral sculpture entitled Split-Rocker in Avignon and in June recreated his Puppy from 1992 for Rockefeller Center in New York. IMAGE:

by BBC News Online's Olive Clancy Jeff Koons' work seems like a fitting complement to the Edinburgh Festival. Big, brash, playful and with plentiful allusions to sex and clowning, what could be more apt? The seven large new paintings on show at the Fruitmarket Gallery are multi-layered riots of brightly painted toenails, lips, plaits, doughnuts, swirling spirals and eyelashes. Called Easyfun-Ethereal, they are a pleasure to wander amongst and a relatively quiet haven from the muggy streets. Niagara: The show is a coup for Edinburgh
Reading the brochure I find they are full of references to high and low culture, mixing surreal images with snatches from adverts. The first, enormous, canvas as you go in is entitled Sandwiches - a jumble of archetypal US deli-style sandwiches, complete with olive eyes and a chocolate smear moustache. They make you want to laugh out loud.

      THE GUARDIAN, LONDON
Thursday, Jun 14, 2007, Page 14 There are tickets, there are bouncers, there are cordons and bag checks and then you are in lock-down with the famous skull for five minutes. The experience is somewhere between nightclub, Bond Street jeweler and security vault: anthropologically, nothing like an art exhibit. Hirst¡¦s true brilliance was in his first flush ¡X the shark, the flies, the paschal lamb in its afterlife of silver bubbles: perfect as visual allegories. They were catnip for critics searching for contemporary art with any kind of meaning and the shark was custom-made for the biggest of art sharks. When he opened a restaurant, spotted wallpaper and butchered cows were his wares. Butterflies trapped in bright paint were for collectors still interested in beauty. Now that Hirst sells to hedge-fund managers, he has his shrewd eye, as ever, on the clientele: the skull is such a commodity, so easily traded and worth way more than its own weight in brand-name, platinum and diamonds.
