(click on images to enlarge) Jeff Koons Koons' work is well-known for its commercial appeal and consumerist basis. His pieces are often large and useless, but beautiful nontheless. For this reason, he is relevant to the direction my work is taking. ARTnews online 'The Selling of Jeff Koons':
Informative article on how he built his 'power base', the rise to fame and brief critical analysis of his practise. Koons: "I'm interested in the morality of what it means to be an artist. As an artist I'm most concerned with what art means to me, how it defines my life, etc. And then after that, my next concern is my actions, the responsibility of my own actions in art in regard to other artists, and then to a wider range of the art audience, such as critics, museum people, collectors, etc. Art to me is a humanitarian act and I believe that there is a responsibility that art should somehow be able to effect mankind, to make the word a better place." In the opposite way to Koons' creations, my work is done by me, by hand. Much as I'd sometimes like to give it away to a factory process, it's important that the pieces are hand-crafted. This means that I wouldn't mind someone doing it for me... It's the idea that time has gone into the making of the work that is important, juxtaposing this with the fact that (like Muniz) the work only remains in photographic form; only existing in life for a limited period of time. The fact that the pieces have a very definite shelf life is key.

Some thought it too dangerous to attempt under a helium filled balloon. Nevertheless, like a summit between the forces of good and the forces of evil (though which is which isn't entirely clear), Rem Koolhaas and Jeff Koons appeared together as the jewel in the crown of Koolhaas and Hans Ulrich Obrists Serpentine Pavilion lecture marathons. It was a great event with the super-smooth, ex-Wall St trader prodded by - as Koolhaas described himself - 'a caricature of a critical European'. Here are a few brief notes that I took - little opinion and less conclusion: Koolhaas' interest in the mechanics of Koons Inc: How big is the enterprise? How does it produce work? Even: 'Is there a `CEO'?' (Answer around 70 people, in office, sculpture, painting and painting/sculpture roles) Images: Koons describing how as a seven year old taking art classes. After some Hawaiian punch his elderly teacher would take Koons' drawing saying 'Jeff - you can't take this home, it look like Frankenstein' Then she'd sit with him while she erased and then corrected his drawing. 'That's how I learnt to work with other people' Koolhaas on the way that economics creates different programmes and timescales in the production of work, that inspiration is not immediately endorsed.

The motifs for the series of large-format sculptures and paintings called "Celebration" seem, like "Balloon Flowers", to have been taken from children's books or fairy-tales, or even from a gift catalogue. They are familiar, at least, there is nothing that is completely strange. But no matter how spontaneous and amusing the recognition experience might be, whether the object comes from the world of things or the world of the imagination, it is not something we have seen before. On the contrary, it confronts us as an image in the image and as a sculpture in the space. The Balloon Flower consists of seven elements: six large blossom- or balloon-like shapes of various sizes, and one bar that can be taken as a flower stem. They are all aglow in the radiance of a triumphant blue, so that they can see themselves and the world around them reflected. That is the truly appealing thing about the Balloon Flower: it attracts people to look at it, and then reflects them back at themselves. Background The Balloon Flower was always intended for a public place. The public has become part of Jeff Koons' work - as a medium. A new generation of artists emerged in about 1980. They proceeded, strategically and unhesitatingly, to celebrate mundaneness and mass media production as propagated two decades before by Pop Art.

With the October issue of Wallpaper* issue going on sale around the globe from 13 September, we take a look at one of our special guest editors, the legendary artist that is Jeff Koons. Don't miss all three issues, guest-edited by Jeff Koons Hedi Slimane and Dieter Rams Jeff Koons is the most written about artist in the world. He says so himself, he's not wrong and is proud of the fact. The interplay of art, of fame, celebrity, taste and money are Koons' concern. And like Warhol, his persona - blank, chilly and slightly chilling - frames his art (we can assure you though that Koons is none of these). Click here to view a gallery of Jeff Koons' seminal works. Born in Pennsylvania in 1955, by the age of eight Koons was copying old masters and selling them at his father's furniture store. By the early 1930s he was an art superstar. His breakthrough work was 1985's Three Ball 50/50 Tank, three basketballs floating in a tank, but he quickly moved towards a more extravagant conceptual pop style. He is famous for his balloon animals cast in highly polished stainless steel or porcelain or PVC, but perhaps best known for 'Michael Jackson and Bubbles' of 1988, a life-sized ceramic rendering of Jackson and his pet chimpanzee. Koons works from his well-manned Chelsea super studio in New York - all his works are created by a team of 80-odd assistants or outsourced to European craftsmen. This summer he presented a new series of paintings Hulk Elvis, at the Gagosian gallery in London's Kings Cross. He is planning to suspend a full-scale 161-foot replica of a Baldwin locomotive above the entrance to Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Museums have moved way beyond just selling exhibition posters in their shops to selling genuine fine art editions and multiples ranging in price from $300 to $30,000 by today's leading contemporary artists through their websites. Given that little information is made readily available to the public about works by local and national arts stars offered exclusively for sale by leading contemporary art museums. This trend is growing growing rapidy and topping the scale is a high end museum run of exclusive limited edition signed print's by Jeff Koons of his famed Monkey Train (Blue), 2007 at the American Friends of the Tel Aviv Museum's of Art's

Jeff Koons: The Schlock of the New
On February 1st, 2007, Los Angeles Country Museum of Art CEO Michael Govan and postmodernist "King of Kitsch" Jeff Koons , were featured speakers at a LACMA public event billed as a conversation on "the role of artists in shaping the museum of the future." At the event the duo publicly announced plans to erect Koons' Train , an enormous structure made of an actual 70-foot fabricated steam locomotive hanging from a massive 161-foot heavy construction crane. To be located at LACMA’s " BP Grand Entrance " on Wilshire Boulevard, the suspended train will spin its wheels, whistle and blow-out steam three times a day; and according to Govan, "The beautiful thing is that we would see it from the 10 freeway and from downtown" - which to those not familiar with L.A. means the structure will be visible from most points in the sprawling metropolis. New York Arts Magazine reported that Govan compared the project to the Eiffel Tower, "expressing hope that the piece would become a landmark for Los Angeles."

I used to really like the old site, just round the corner from Sadie Coles HQ . It was a great space, big upstairs with a smaller more intimate space in the basement, the whole thing tucked away off Regent Street.
Davies Street is completely different, not so much a gallery as a shop window, albeit a very swanky Bond Street affair with a black suited bouncer and no signs of the usual gallery paraphernalia: posh bird dressed in a black cocktail dress IMing her mates on last years iMac, answering phone with posh voice (that's what she's there for) and shuffling expensive catalogues around while owner patronises some weirdly dressed Eurotrash millionaire in pointy shoes. Here, the office is hidden behind a concealed door and from what I could see not much happens back there.
I liked it, I like the idea of being able to see the whole show without entering the gallery, I particularly like the idea of spotting the piece you need for your Paris/London/New York/LA home while heading up to Claridges for cocktails (of course you'll be in your chauffered Lexus/Merc/Beemer so the work had better be BIG so you can see it at speed through tinted glass - somehow I find it more honest.
