JEFF KOONS
Balloon Flower, 2006
High chromium stainless steel with transparent color coating
114 x 132 x 108 inches (289.6 x 335.3 x 274.3 cm)
Version 4/4 Jeff Koons was born in York, PA in 1955. He obtained a B.F.A at The Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, and also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. Since his emergence in the 1980s Jeff Koons has blended the concerns and methods of Pop, Conceptual, and appropriation art with craft-making and popular culture to create his own unique iconography, often controversial and always engaging. His work explores contemporary obsessions with sex and desire; race and gender; and celebrity, media, commerce, and fame. A self-proclaimed "idea man," Koons hires artisans and technicians to make the actual works. For him, the hand of the artist is not the important issue: "Art is really just communication of something and the more archetypal it is, the more communicative it is."
Jeff Koons' artworks rarely inspire moderate responses, and this is one signal of the importance of his achievement. Focusing on some of the most unexpected objects as models for his work, Koons' works eschew typical standards of "good taste" in art and zero in rather precisely on the vulnerabilities of hierarchies and value systems. As critic Christopher Knight has written "He turns the traditional clich© of the work of art inside out: Rather than embodying a spiritual or expressive essence of a highly individuated artist, art here is composed from a distinctly American set of conventional middle-class values."

Monday Musing: Defending Jeff Koons, or, Why Don't You Like My Puppy?
This short essay is inspired by a comment made by our own Timothy Don in his wonderful Negotiation of June 13th. As I wrote in the comments, Timothy is one of the few people writing on art at the moment I truly enjoy and profit from reading (Arthur Danto being another). And let's be honest, friends, art criticism is a foul business. Most people engaging in it would get a punch in the nose if they tried to write that way somewhere else. For the most part, it's pretentious, jargon-obsessed junk. As Clement Greenberg once mentioned, "The fact is that most art writers are cold; they're usually people who wouldn't be able to survive writing about anything else." And I'm glad I brought up Clement Greenberg here. The man could write very clearly about what are often difficult ideas. I love the guy. Love to read him, love to think about what he had to say. But it ought to be mentioned here that he was wrong, completely wrong. And Timothy Don is a wonderful writer on art, and he has many Greenbergian impulses and he's sometimes wrong too. He's not wrong in his impressions and much of his analysis. He's generally hitting the nail on the head with that. But he's wrong in his aesthetic judgments. He's wrong, as Greenberg might have put it, in his taste. Now that's not to say that Timothy Don has bad taste. I know the man and I can tell you that his taste is impeccable. The more important point is that he thinks there is taste at all, which is why, after a great reflection on why he began to appreciate Basquiat despite himself, he still feels he has to draw the line at Jeff Koons. But there is no such line. The Greenbergian moment is over. It's over. The Kantian argument lost. All there are now are many things and the struggle is to figure out what they are and why they are interesting. And because of that fact there is no reason to be so hard on our little friends like Mr. Koons. Mr. Koons was trying to liberate us from our Greenbergian fetors.

Jeff Koons And The Paradox Of A Superstar's Phenomenon
The Koons phenomenon Jeff Koons himself, his objects, and the discursive reception that surrounds it all seems gravely paradoxical. D.S. Baker Issue # 4, February 1993 Jeff Koons is among the most controversial and intriguing artists to have emerged in the past decade. Like Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol before him, he is concerned with the transformation of everyday objects into art and takes such post-modern issues as high and low culture, context, and commodification of art as the central focus of his work.
At the Modern , the publication of the San Francisco MoMA It's the most important visual arts exhibition in San Francisco this year.

Handsome, globe-trotting playboy Jeff Koons, the self-proclaimed "most written-about artist in the world," works from his busy "Jeff Koons Productions, Inc." studio at 600 Broadway in NYC. Born in 1955, Jeff started his meteoric rise in the 1980's by turning contemporary american iconography and popular kitsch into controversial high art. Koons signature works feature strikingly simple imagery transformed into sculptures using the finest of materials. Koons' sculptures have recenty sold as for as much as $1.8 million or $721 per sq. inch! He has even written a book about himself and his work: "The Jeff Koons Handbook." Why should you care? Because Jeff Koons is a balloon artist, and his balloon sculptures are absolutely gorgeous! What distinguishes Koons' balloon art from ours is that he doesn't make balloon animals no, this contemporary artist makes sculptures

Rabbit,
Rabbit

Stainless steel, 41 x 19 x 12 in.
Partial gift of Stefan T. Edlis and
H. Gael Neeson 2000.21 Koons’s Rabbit began as an inflatable, store-bought, plastic toy. Its transformation started when Koons bought it, blew it up, and had it cast in highly polished stainless steel. It has crinkled ears like an inflatable toy, a spherical head, and bulbous appendages, yet its face is blank. Employing a cliché, Koons has depicted a rabbit eating a carrot. While it appears to be a whimsical work of art, it also raises serious questions about what constitutes art. In its finished state it visually challenges the viewer on several levels. While it appears to be a shiny, lightweight, Mylar balloon, it is actually quite heavy and hard. Its mirrorlike surface also seduces the viewer, much as shiny silver in a jewelry store window would. As such, Rabbit addresses the heyday of luxury and consumerism in the 1980s.

. That makes Koons the most expensive living artist in the world, and I guess, 'Hanging Heart', at 9 feet tall and more than 3,500 pounds, the most expensive heart.
I have just bought three much smaller heart sculptures by Mackenzie Thorpe , an artist who works in the UK. They are sculptures of small people and tell the stories of their lives, their joy, despair, love and sorrow. Then in Miami a couple of weeks ago, I saw that the Miami artist Britto
