Ottmann: How far are you involved in the actual production of your work? Ottmann: Could you elaborate the term "integrity"? Ottmann: How do you see the development of your work? Koons: I come out of a background of, at one time, being the Senior Representative for the Mu-seum of Modern Art. I was also a commodity broker on Wall Street for six years, so I have experience in deal-ing with people on a professional level. I had only one company in my last project that turned me down. And in each company I have to deal first with them, then with their lawyers, and in some cas-es with their advertising firms and their printers. Ottmann How do you see advertisement?

Lives and works in New York, New York Jeff Koons' artworks rarely inspire moderate responses, and this is one signal of the importance of his achievement. Focusing on some of the most unexpected objects as models for his work, Koons' works eschew typical standards of "good taste" in art and zero in rather precisely on the vulnerabilities of hierarchies and value systems. As critic Christopher Knight has written "He turns the traditional cliché of the work of art inside out: Rather than embodying a spiritual or expressive essence of a highly individuated artist, art here is composed from a distinctly American set of conventional middle-class values." The 1986 work Rabbit is an icon of art in 1980s. Cast in highly polished stainless steel from an inflatable Easter bunny novelty, the sculpture's reflective surfaces have the eerie effect of including the viewer in its cool reflection in spite of any angle at which it may be approached. In a series of works he called "Banality", Koons creates sculptures of dimensions and details monstrous and absurd. These works, like

Jeff Koons's Puppy was exhibited in the U.S. for the first time at New York City's Rockefeller Center. Rising 43 feet from its paws to its ears, the sculpture was formed from a series of stainless steel armatures constructed to hold over 25 tons of soil watered by an internal irrigation system. Over 70,000 multi-hued flowering plants grew from this steel and soil structure, including Marigolds, Begonias, Impatiens, Petunias, and Lobelias. First created in 1992 for a temporary exhibition in the German city of Arolson, Puppy a symbol, according to Koons, of "love, warmth and happiness"was a contemporary artwork that captured Koons's sculptural imagination, horticultural dexterity, and engineering skill. Artist Bio
Born in 1955 in Pennsylvania, Jeff Koons is one of the world's most widely recognized artists. Koons's earliest works from the late 1970's were mass-produced inflatable flowers and toys placed carefully on mirrors. His focus on the selection, production, and display of commercial products continued in the 1980's. Sculptures and photographs completed by Koons during this time explored contemporary American iconography and the relationship between popular kitsch and high art. His work has been the subject of many exhibitions both in the United States and Europe, including major museum retrospectives organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1992) and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1992), and solo exhibitions at the Sonnabend Gallery, New York (1999) and the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, Spain (1997).

  • Abstraction and luxury are the guard dogs of the upper class. Art to me is a humanitarian act and I believe that there is a responsibility that art should somehow be able to affect mankind, to make the world a better place. I try to be a truthful artist and I try to show a level of courage. I enjoy that. I'm a messenger. When somebody sees my work, the only thing that they see is the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Jeff Koons And The Paradox Of A Superstar's Phenomenon
The Koons phenomenon Jeff Koons himself, his objects, and the discursive reception that surrounds it all seems gravely paradoxical. D.S. Baker Issue # 4, February 1993 Jeff Koons is among the most controversial and intriguing artists to have emerged in the past decade. Like Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol before him, he is concerned with the transformation of everyday objects into art and takes such post-modern issues as high and low culture, context, and commodification of art as the central focus of his work.
