The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is presenting an exhibition that pairs the artwork of Paul Klee with the drawings and beautiful freak folk music of Devendra Banhart . According to the SFMOMA, the exhibit, titled Abstract Rhythms: Paul Klee and Devendra Banhart, "explores the relationship between music and visual art." It features more than a dozen of Klee's works on paper along with thirteen of Banhart's drawings, created along with his new album Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. Seen here at left, Klee's " Der Verliebte (Man in Love)" and, at right, Banhart's cover art for "Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon." From the SFMOMA: Music was a consistent source of inspiration for Klee (1879–1940), spanning the arc of his career and informing much of his practice. He came from a family of musicians and, prior to turning his attention to painting, drawing, and printmaking, was an accomplished violinist who often performed in concerts. His varied experience with music influenced much of his work. Hoffmanneske M¤rchenscene (Hoffmannesque Fairy Tale Scene) (1921), for example, was inspired by Jacques Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann, an opera Klee saw on several occasions. Additionally, Klee wrote extensively on the relationship between graphic arts and music, and he devised elaborate techniques to marry the two forms in his practice. Some excerpts from his writings are paired with selected works in the exhibition...

Paul Klee
Klee's position among the great painters of this century is unique. He neither founded a new style nor belonged to a modern movement. His achievement was not so much concerned with the manner of painting, but with its content. His influence, though not immediately evident, has been perhaps the most widely felt of his time. The script of this film was written by Professor Will Grohmann, a personal friend of Paul Klee and the leading authority on his work. It shows selected examples taken from nine thousand works created by Klee, and groups them together not chronologically but by subject matter. The commentary describes Klee's life, his relationships and the different stages in his artistic career - Blaue Reiter, For more information see section 17 and section 19

Tiny picture painter and averagely tall etcher Paul Klee was born in Switzerland with a sense of humour that led to him calling pictures things like 'The Twittering Machine' and a gift for music that had him fiddling with the Bern Municipal Orchestra by the time he was 10. However, he plumped for painting not plucking and studied art in Munich, after which he scraped for spondulix and sketched for love. By 1907 he was a married dad and scratching a living as an etcher. After meeting cutting edge Kandinsky and August Macke in 1911 he joined the transcendentally inclined Blue Rider School. In 1914 he and August went to North Africa for a hol' (fancy taking a Macke to the desert) and, just as Monet had done half a century earlier, Paul became radiant with enthusiasm for the intense natural light, not to mention the grid patterns created by those zany Tunisian irrigation ditches.

Paul Klee - An intangible man and artist
"A new centre is opening this month in Bern to celebrate Paul Klee (1879-1940), one of the greats in the pantheon of modern art.
Klee described himself as "intangible" - a perhaps fitting epithet for a man who was seen at times as both bourgeois and bohemian, and who went down in history as a Swiss artist, even though he was German.
Klee was born and died in Switzerland, but his formative years were spent in Germany, where he became famous as an artist of the avantgarde."

AMAM 1944.21 Paul Klee's Die Paukenorgel , painted during the artist's last year at the Bauhaus in Dessau, shows the influence of French Cubism, Bauhaus Constructivism, and the work of Laszlo Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) and Lyonel Feiningger in its monochromatic composition of crystallized forms. The title and details place the largely abstract work in a musical context, and bear witness to the fact that Klee was as proficient and knowledgeable in music as he was in art.
Klee painted Die Paukenorgel in 1930, his last year at the Bauhaus in Dessau. In contrast with his earlier intuitive approach to artistic creation, at this time he was conducting planimetric and stereometric experiments into the geometric origins of form. Drawing on scientific data derived from contemporary physical, mathematical, psychological, and aesthetic research, he formulated a theory of pictorial space and its formal relationships and assembled a handbook of motifs. Almost obsessively, he drew endless diagrams in which he explored the kinetic variations and rhythms of structure by projecting geometric objects in space.

Paul Klee's Art
Paul Klee was not childish, despite frequent comparisons between his art and that of children... ... At the Phillips Collection, where 80 works by the Swiss-born modernist were exhibited this fall (they are now at the Menil Collection in Houston, through January 14, 2007), the link with children's art was made explicit by an adjoining room filled with the sort of masterpieces proud parents affix to refrigerator doors. A few of these are delightful - my personal favorite is A Visit to The DIA [Detroit Institute of Arts], by 11-year-old Gregory Stafford, which shows dinosaurs strolling through an art museum, gazing at paintings and sculptures of dinosaurs much like themselves. Rarely have I seen such eloquent tribute to art as mimesis - in the words of the German scholar Wilhelm Worringer, "The criterion of judgment to which we cling as something axiomatic, is, as I have said, approximation to reality." Most child artists fail to achieve anything like an approximation to reality, but we forgive them, because we assume their failure is not deliberate. For example, the jump ropers in seven-year-old Mikako Sugai's Skipping have limbs curved like rubber hoses, with no discernible joints. We smile, because we expect that one day soon, young Mikako will learn how to draw elbows and knees. But what about Klee's
