Biography:

Born in Switzerland, Paul Klee studied and worked as an etcher in Munich before joining the Blaue Reiter group in 1911. His initial media of choice was watercolor in the Expressionist style, however Klee soon fell under the spell of Cubism and oils after meeting Robert Delaunay. From 1920 to 1933, Klee taught at the Bauhaus and explored his abstract paintings that were often derived from folk and children’s art. Klee was condemned as a degenerate by the Nazis in 1933, and subsequently returned to Switzerland where he died in 1940.

With Heinz Berggruen's gift of ninety works by Paul Klee spanning the artist's entire career, the Metropolitan Museum has become an important center for the study of this German artist. Klee is known for his simple stick figures, suspended fish, moon faces, eyes, arrows, and quilts of color, which he orchestrated into fantastic and childlike yet deeply meditative works. Cubism of Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, and the abstract translucent color planes of Robert Delaunay. In 1914, Klee visited Tunisia. The experience was the turning point in his life and career. The limpid light of North Africa awakened his sense of color. During his stay, Klee gradually detached color from physical description and used it independently, which gave him the final needed push toward abstraction. The view of the mosque in Hammamet with Its Mosque ) demonstrates Klee's path toward abstraction. By 1915, he had turned his back to nature and never again painted after the model. With abstracted forms and merry symbols, he expressed the most diverse subjects drawn from his imagination (

Continuing a series of exhibitions of the work of Paul Klee, this exhibition presents a remarkable group of twenty paintings, drawings and prints that explore the artist's close affiliation with the natural world. Paul Klee: Signs of Life investigates Klee's ongoing study of the intricate workings of plant and animal life and his invention of a strikingly coherent visual language of signs and symbols that communicate both visible and invisible reality. From his earliest childhood Swiss-born German artist Paul Klee (1879 - 1940) expressed a profound interest in the natural world. A youthful fascination with a range of species such as insects, snails, cats and flowers grew to become the basis of the mature artist's visual vocabulary. Although he was particularly drawn to more humble creatures and plants, Klee learned to distill even complex organisms, including human beings, to their most fundamental aspects. By revealing the most elemental characteristics and mechanisms of the life forms he examines, Klee demonstrates each living thing's uniqueness and facilitates our understanding of the ultimate similarities between diverse species.

Date and Place of Birth: Life: Paul Klee was really too original to be associated with any artistic movement. He created thousands of exquisite drawings and prints, and delicate paintings of mixed media. His work was characterized by (deceptively) simple looking use of line and color, wit and an often child-like view of subjects. Important Works:

His contact with Expressionist artists such as Kandinsky , and a visit to Tunis, led him into color. He believed improvisation was an important part of painting, with the artist subconsciously guiding a work as it evolved, rather than consciously controlling it. His paintings are characterized by line and color, with an element of humor and fantasy. Quote: "The work of art ... is above all a process of creation, it is never experienced as mere product. A certain fire, an impulse to create, is kindled, is transmitted through the hand, leaps to the canvas, and in the form of a spark leaps back to its starting place, completing the circle back to the eye and further (back to the source of the movement, the will, the idea)." Zentrum Paul Klee
The Zentrum Paul Klee museum is dedicated to the life and works of artist Paul Klee (1879 - 1940). The museum is situated in Bern and features approximately 40 percent of Klee's entire pictorial works. The majority of Klee's works were donated by Livia Klee-Meyer, his daughter-in-law. Livia inherited nearly 690 of Klee's works. She then donated them to the city of Bern in the summer of 1997. Livia's donation topped with additional works and documents loaned by the Paul Kleeson Foundation and his family produced 200 more items from the artist. To accommodate the large collection and make way for a cultural centre for Bern, the decision to build a museum on the eastern outskirts of the city was made. Famous Italian architect Renzo Piano was contacted in 1998 to design the new facility. A preliminary project was elaborated in 200 and the building was finally completed in 2005. On June 20th, 2005, the Zentrum Paul Klee opened its doors and welcomed visitors for the first time.
Personally, Klee was not only an artist, but a musician, poet, and teacher as well. He is now known as one of the 20th Century's most significant and compelling artists. Klee spent a majority of his years in Bern.
