Paul Klee was born in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland in 1879. He studied art at the Munich Academy of Fine Art (1898-1901) and later became associated with the Blaue Reiter group. Artists in the group believed that they had a responsibility to "heal the gaping wound that separates man from his environment".
Klee was living in Germany during the First World War and in 1916 was called up by the German Army . He was not sent to the front-line and spent some of his time painting aeroplanes. His war experiences appeared in his book, Diaries: 1898-1918
After the Armistice Klee taught at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau. Klee was a brilliant and undogmatic teacher and a stimulating writer on art. The most important book Klee wrote during this period was, Pedagogical Stetchbook
With the emergence of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany, Klee returned to Switzerland. A large number of his paintings on display in Germany were confiscated by the Nazis as degenerate. The growth of fascism in Europe affected Klee badly and he began to suffer from acute depression. In 1935 Klee developed scleroderma, a rare debilitating disease.

Paul Klee (1879-1940) was one of the most inventive, prolific and individual artists of the 20th century. The son of a German music teacher living in Switzerland, he was taught to draw and paint by his maternal grandmother. He graduated from the Bern Gymnasium (secondary school) in 1898, the year his family moved to Munich, where Klee began his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Art. In 1901-06 he traveled through Italy and visited Paris and Berlin, returning at intervals to Bern, where he played violin in the Bern orchestra. He returned to Munich in 1906 and married the Swiss pianist Lily Stumpf. In 1911 he met August Macke and Wassily Kandinsky , who was to become a lifelong friend. Through them Klee met Franz Marc and Alexei von Jawlensky, and joined in the 1912 Blaue Reiter group exhibition while working part time as an art critic. That year he also traveled to Paris a second time, saw Cubist works by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, first saw the satirical drawings of Daumier, and met French painter Robert Delaunay (1885-1941), who awakened Klee to symbolist ideas of color. He traveled to Tunisia in 1914 with Macke and Swiss painter Louis Moilliet, a childhood friend, a trip that permanently aroused his sensitivity to color. He returned to become a founding member of the New Munich Secession. Klee was profoundly affected by Franz Marc's death in battle in April 1916, the same month Klee was inducted into the German army, where he painted aircraft and worked as a paymaster's clerk. After the War, in 1919 Klee was given a major exhibition of 362 works by Munich art dealer

Klee, Paul
Timeline: The 20th century A Swiss-born painter and graphic artist whose personal, often gently humorous works are replete with allusions to dreams, music, and poetry, Paul Klee , b. Dec. 18, 1879, d. June 29, 1940, is difficult to classify. Primitive art, surrealism cubism , and children's art all seem blended into his small-scale, delicate paintings, watercolors, and drawings. Klee grew up in a musical family and was himself a violinist. After much hesitation he chose to study art, not music, and he attended the Munich Academy in 1900. There his teacher was the popular symbolist and society painter Franz von STUCK. Klee later toured Italy (1901-02), responding enthusiastically to Early Christian and Byzantine art. Klee's early works are mostly etchings and pen-and-ink drawings. These combine satirical, grotesque, and surreal elements and reveal the influence of Francisco de Goya and James Ensor, both of whom Klee admired. Two of his best-known etchings, dating from 1903, are Virgin in a Tree and Two Men Meet, Each Believing the Other to Be of Higher Rank

Paul Klee (1879 - 1940) Swiss painter, watercolorist, and etcher, who was one of the most original masters of modern art. Belonging to no specific art movement, he created works known for their fantastic dream images, wit, and imagination.
A German citizen, Klee was born in Münchenbuchsee, near Bern, Switzerland, on December 18, 1879, and in 1898 moved to Munich, where he studied art at a private school and at the Munich Academy. He grew up in a musical family and was himself a violinist. After much hesitation he chose to study art, not music, and he attended the Munich Academy in 1900. In 1906 he married the pianist Lili Stumpf and settled in Munich, then an important center for avant-garde art. He join Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), an expressionist group that contributed much to the development of abstract art. After World War I he taught at the Bauhaus school . In 1931 he began teaching at Dusseldorf Academy, but he was dismissed by the Nazis, who termed his work "degenerate." In 1933, Klee went to Switzerland. There he came down with the crippling collagen disease scleroderma, which forced him to develop a simpler style and eventually killed him.
The paintings of Klee is difficult to classify. His earliest works were pencil landscape studies that showed the influence of impressionism. Until 1912 he also produced many black-and-white etchings; the overtones of fantasy and satire in these works showed the influence of 20th-century expressionism as well as of such master printmakers as Francisco Goya and William Blake. Klee often incorporated letters and numerals into his paintings, but he also produced series of works that explore mosaic and other effects. His late works, characterized by heavy black lines, are often reflections on death and war, but his last painting, Still Life is a serene summation of his life's concerns as a creator. Klee was a teacher at the Bauhaus, Germany's most advanced art school, from 1920 to 1931.
