John Frederick Kensett From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search John Frederick Kensett, signed and dated Feb. 29, 1864. John Frederick Kensett (1816-1872); Mount Washington from the Valley of Conway ; Collection of Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts Artist John Frederick Kensett was born on March 22, 1816 in Cheshire, Connecticut , and died on December 14, 1872 in New York City . He attended school at Cheshire Academy , and studied engraving with his immigrant father, Thomas Kensett, and later with his uncle, Alfred Dagget. He worked as engraver in the New Haven area until about 1838, after which he went to work as a bank note engraver in New York City. In 1840, along with Asher Durand and John William Casilear , Kensett traveled to Europe in order to study painting. There he met and traveled with Benjamin Champney . The two sketched and painted throughout Europe, refining their talents. During this period, Kensett developed an appreciation and affinity for 17th century Dutch landscape painting. Kensett and Champney returned to the United States in 1847.

Kensett September 18 - December 21, 2001 J ohn Frederick Kensett (1816-1872) was one of the leading figures of the Hudson River School, the renowned group of artists who celebrated the nineteenth-century American landscape. Kensett compiled hundreds of pencil sketches while touring the North American continent during the warmer months of the year. These drawings then served as source material for the paintings he created during the winter in his studio. A selection of Kensett's costumed figure studies, rendered in pencil and watercolor, will complement the exhibit's display of the artist's better-known American landscape sketches. Kensett produced numerous figurative drawings during his years spent overseas, as consideration of the human form was an intrinsic element of the revered European artistic tradition. A prolific painter and regular participant in the major exhibitions of his day, Kensett had a congenial personality that led him to positions of leadership in many important art organizations. He was a member of the United States Capitol Art Commission in 1859, the principal organizer of New York's Sanitary Fair Exhibition in 1864, a founding trustee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1870, and, at his death in 1872, president of the Artists' Fund Society. "Born in Cheshire, Connecticut, in 1816, Kensett received his first artistic training from his father, Thomas, and an uncle, Alfred Daggett, both engravers. During the 1830s, he worked in print shops in New York, New Haven, and Albany, but grew increasingly restless at the engraver's trade and eager for a career in the fine arts. In 1840, he sailed for Europe, where he lived and worked in England and Paris and toured the Rhine region, Switzerland, and Italy.

In 1840 he went to Europe with Asher B. Durand and John W. Casilear. In Europe Kensett studied painting and met his lifelong friend, Benjamin Champney. Kensett and Champney traveled throughout Europe sketching and painting together. Kensett returned to America in 1847 and in 1850 he and Champney went to Fryeburg, Maine, and on to Conway. At that time Kensett made the sketches of his famous painting M oun t Washington from the Valley of Conway (later engraved by the American Art Union). Kensett made his home in New York City, but he spent much of his life traveling to the mountains in the West, upstate New York, and New England. One of the leading painters of the Hudson River School, he painted extensively throughout New England. He wa s elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1849.
