Architects and Craftsmen of Wolverhampton's Buildings ARKELL , Daniel. flourished about 1890. Temple Row based architect responsible for many developments in Birmingham. BANKS Banks also designed model dwellings and lodgings in Brickkiln Street (1853). In town he was responsible for many shops and houses. He designed the school built near to the church of St. Luke. He even planned a campanile in the “style of Giotto” in John Street. Edward Banks was a very prominent figure in the life of the town, serving on the council and as a member of the Public Works Committee. For a short period Banks was in partnership with George Bidlake with whom he collaborated on St. Andrew’s in 1865/67 and St. Matthew’s in 1847/49, both in Wolverhampton. BATES, Ernest. The Parish Church of St John The Evangelist, Crowborough, East Sussex A brief historical overview of the church and its history The Church of St John the Evangelist is located on the edge of the Ashdown Forest and seven miles from Tunbridge Wells, and was built in 1839 by the De La Warr family as a Chapel of Ease within the Parish of Withyham, to serve the small hamlet of Crowborough (known later as Old Town or St John’s). The Revd Thomas Charlton (Vicar 1926-1931) stated in 1939, on the centenary of the foundation, that it was Elizabeth Countess De La Warr who “considered the responsibility laid upon her family to provide for the spiritual needs of those who lived in this corner of their great domains” . Fourteen acres of virgin forest-land were enclosed and a small house in this area was enlarged to constitute a school, a schoolhouse and a residence for a priest. The church was known locally as Crowborough Chapel, and was served by the Curate from the mother parish of Withyham, St Michael and All Angels, three miles to the north. Originally the church consisted of the nave only, and followed the design of Newman’s Church at Littlemore, near Oxford. It was 60 feet by 25 feet, and 43 feet high, with a grouped triplet of three lancets at the east end, lancets in the side walls, and a window with simple tracery above the west door. The west front was surmounted by a bellcote. The church was, in essence, a simple plain design.

Blue plaques, erected in London since 1867, are among the most familiar features of the capital’s streetscape. They adorn the fa§ades of buildings in areas as different as Primrose Hill, Soho and Wimbledon; some of these buildings are grand, others look very ordinary, but all are connected by the fact that a remarkable person lived or worked there at some point in history. Blue plaques celebrate great figures of the past and the buildings that they inhabited. They open a window into another time by showing us where the great and the good have penned their masterpieces, developed new technologies, lived or died. Actors, authors, politicians, painters, scientists, sportsmen, campaigners and reformers – people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds – have all been commemorated in this way. The London blue plaques scheme has been run by English Heritage since 1986, and continues to grow at a rate of around 10-15 plaques each year. In their full range, totalling over 800, the capital’s plaques build up a fascinating picture of the varied activities of different ages and the achievements of London’s myriad residents.

The Memorial Windows St. Anne’s Church has four excellent memorial windows – the magnificent Victorian Gothic Revival window by Kempe at the east end and three attractively designed modern windows in the walls of the nave: one donated in memorial to James Hargreaves and his wife , the other two to Kenneth Brown and his wife The Kempe window The Kempe (East) Window (click on the image to enlarge) The splendid east window was designed and produced by the London studios of Charles Eamer Kempe. On the 8th December, 1889 the window was dedicated to the Honour and Glory of God and as a memorial to the first incumbent and vicar of Fence. The Reverend William Haworth, M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, spent the whole of his ministerial life in Pendle Forest – first as curate of Newchurch and then as Vicar of Fence from the opening of the church for divine worship in August 1837 until his death in February 1883, a period of 46 years. His memorial tablet is on the south wall of the nave. The window comprises three lancet lights, with a total area of 82 square feet. The central light depicts Christ in Majesty, crowned and carrying the kingly symbols of orb and sceptre. Underneath is a depiction of the Annunciation – the Archangel Gabriel informing Mary that she would bear Jesus. On the right is St. Mary with a nativity scene below. The figure in the left hand light is the church’s Patron Saint – St. Anne and underneath Anne teaching her infant daughter, Mary, to read. Flanking the window are paintings of St. Peter on the left and St. Paul on the right placed in church in 1896.

Saint Mark's Church was specifically founded to reflect the theology of the Oxford Movement, a movement within the Anglican Church to reclaim its catholic heritage. The architect's designs were approved in advance by the Ecclesiological Society in London. The building's architecture is in the Decorated Gothic style of the late 13th and 14th centuries, and it is regarded as one of the best examples of this Gothic Revival style. In the latter part of the 19th century what had been the rather plain interior of the church became more highly decorated as the ritual movement within the catholic branch of the Anglican Church began to exert more influence. Much of the embellishment that you see as you look around stems from the period between about 1890 and 1923. Main Entrance The main entrance to the church is through the Fiske Doors, which give many passers-by a memorable impression of Saint Mark's Church. The doors are a brilliant red and may have been the first red church doors in Philadelphia - they certainly seemed scandalous when they were installed according to contemporary newspaper articles. The polychromed figures set into the stained glass tympanum depict Christ in Majesty with the legend "Come unto me all that are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." The portal was designed by architects Zanzinger, Borie & Medary in 1923 and was created by the Philadelphia studios of Samuel Yellin and Nicola d'Ascenzo.

St Leonard's Parish Church, Turners Hill, West Sussex - 13th February 2004 The foundation stone for St Leonard's church was laid on 3rd March 1894 by Mrs Oxley, the leading benefactor. The architect was Lacy W Ridge who designed the building in the Perpendicular style. Owing to a shortage of funds, the tower was not included in the original contract and in fact didn't get built until 1923/24 in memory of those who lost their lives in the Great War. The tower contains a full peal of bells, acknowledged to be very fine. They are rung from ground level, which requires ropes some 70 feet in length, and, according to a lady who is one of the ringers, gives a good aerobic work out at the same time! Here are two pictures of the nave, the first looking east into the chancel and the impressive east window, the second looking west into the tower. The stained glass Charles Eamer Kempe (1837-1907) was commissioned to supply the glass for the sanctuary windows. Kemp used his family coat of arms (three golden wheat sheaves) as his trademark, and this can be found high in the east window. Here is a picture of the beautiful east window which was installed in the church in 1896. To quote from the church guidebook:
