Windows
Detail of the Lavers and Barraud sanctuary window Detail of the Charles Eamer Kempe window We are fortunate to have examples of three great Victorian stained glass window makers. All three sanctuary windows are fine examples of the work of Messrs Lavers and Barraud dating from around 1864. The firm was established in London in 1855 by Nathaniel Wood Lavers (1828-1911) and Francis Philip Barraud (1824-1900). Later, in 1866, Nathaniel Hubert John Westlake, a designer who had been working for them for some time, was made a partner. An example of the work of Charles Eamer Kempe (1834-1907) in the memorial window, depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds at the Manger, was installed in 1893 in memory of Nellie, wife of John Wetherby of Melmott Lodge, Cookham who died in 1889. There is no doubt that Kempe was one of the giants among Victorian glass artists. Christopher Woodforde, author of ‘English Stained and Painted Glass’ is somewhat reserved in his appreciation: “The windows of Charles Eamer Kempe vary in quality, but always repay examination.”

Tiles and tales
Ovingdean Hall is a Grade II listed building; its front is covered with yellow mathematical tiles . The sides were originally also tiled but when they began to rot, permission was granted in the 1970s to remove them. It has a wide porch with Doric columns and pediment; it is two storied and has a cellar.  There is an unproven story that the Hall was used for French prisoners during the Napoleonic wars of 1793-1815, but there may be truth in the belief that it was used to house Russian prisoners in the Crimean War c1853-56. Usually, patrons are searching for ancestors, researching particular ACW regiments, or looking for examples of items worn or used by soldiers of the period. Ultimately, this database will reflect the full range of MHI's photographic collection, ranging from the periods of the Mexican War in the 1840s to recent operations such as those in Somalia and Bosnia. As our digitization efforts expand, we hope to provide links to scanned images through this database. The following photos were found: To order above photo, see MHI Web Page

The art of stained glass reaches its Victorian zenith
Adrian Barlow “STAINED GLASS by Kempe” — these words in a church guide book, or in Pevsner’s Buildings of England , are often the only nod of recognition towards one of the most important figures in Anglican church art of the past 150 years. Ignored or disparaged for a long period after his death in 1907, Kempe’s reputation has revived dramatically in the past 20 years. Today, not only Kempe himself, but the artists and craftsmen who made his Studios the most sought-after in the later 19th century, are being acknowledged and revalued. Charles Eamer Kempe was born in 1837, in Ovingdean on the edge of Brighton, and Sussex remained central to his life. It was here that he met the architect George Frederick Bodley, with whom he began his career and with whom he collaborated on some of the churches that best exemplify the Tractarian spirit in Victorian architecture. Among these were All Saints’, Cambridge; St John’s Tue Brook, on Merseyside; Clumber Chapel in Nottinghamshire; and the church of the Cowley Fathers in Oxford.
Craftsman’s art and music’s measure: a Kempe angel from one of his windows in Lichfield Cathedral In Sussex itself, he not only undertook one of his earliest and most important commissions, the decoration of Cuckfield Church, but bought and magnificently restored an Elizabethan manor house, Old Place at Lindfield, which was to become his lifetime home and his centre for entertaining friends, clients, and fellow artists. After his death, an impressive memorial was dedicated to him in Chichester Cathedral.
