It is a well-known fact that they had a passionate and stormy relationship, filled with great love and also betrayals. They both had incredible talents and vision, but Diego's work would be more public and monumental, whereas Frida's was more personal and intimate in scale. I will first explore the development of Rivera's style of social realism, then attempt to define the surreal artworks of Kahlo.

Diego Rivera was born in Guanajuato Mexico in 1886, but moved to Mexico City with his family when he was eight. He studied in the San Carlos Academy and in the workshop of artist Jose Guadalupe Posada, who was to influence him greatly. Awarded a scholarship to study in Europe, he traveled to Paris in 1909. There, he was influenced by post-impressionism and cubism. He became especially fascinated with Picasso's cubist works. After some cubist experiments of his own, he became disenchanted with the elitist art world. In 1920, he went to Italy to study Renaissance art .

Frida Kahlo in Mexico City
Banco de México, ‘Fiduciario’ en el Fideicomiso relativo a los Museos Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo Her persona, fashioned over almost three decades of self-portraits, fused physical suffering and emotional isolation. Her frank depiction of a woman’s psychic pain made her a feminist icon. She became a Chicana heroine and an unintended purveyor of Mexican kitsch. She is an emblem of confessional painting at a time when nothing is intimate anymore. But this year, as Mexico celebrates the centenary of her birth, the largest retrospective ever of her work attempts to look beyond what Mexicans call Fridamania. The result is a rich view of her art and her life, one that broadens the perspective on her career beyond the narrow, cultish view that has at times threatened to obscure her work. For the majority who know Kahlo’s painting only from the movie version of her life or the unmistakable power of her face on a T-shirt, the exhibition that opened here last month at the Palacio de Bellas Artes may come as a surprise.

This selection of 50 photographic portraits of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-54) spans the life of the artist, beginning with a photograph of a two year-old and ending with the image of Kahlo on her deathbed. They follow the artist's transition from child to famous artist, documented by photographers including Kahlo's relatives, lovers and friends, many of whom were also professional photographers. The selection includes both black and white images, and some previously unexhibited works in colour. On display for the first time in the UK, these portraits bring into focus the painter, the paintings, the patient, the wife, the daughter, the lover and the friend. They permit us to peer into Kahlo's bedroom, sit at her table, visit her hospital room, wander into her garden, view her collections and play with her pets. Some of these photographs conceal as much as they reveal about the woman who described herself as "la gran ocultadora," the great concealer. While most of the images provide us with a glimpse of the woman behind the façade, others, though maybe not so revealing, are equally fascinating in allowing us to view one of the most intriguing of the artist's creations; the construction of a self-image as carefully crafted and conceived as any of the painter's other works of art.

I made this miniature dollhouse for my daughter because I wanted her to learn about Frida Kahlo . This was such a fun project to make. It took me months to complete it but I am glad that I did it. Natalie loves it and once in a while we play with it on the kitchen table. She likes anything that is tiny just like her Mom. Next year I want to finish another dollhouse for her that I started last year but this one is bigger. Posted by Elsita in CRAFT Permalink Digg This Save to del.icio.us

Fibromyalgia in Frida Kahlo's life and art
(Reprinted from: Arthritis Rheum. 2000 Mar;43(3):708-9) Martinez-Lavin,Manuel MD; Amigo, Mary-Carmen MD; Coindreau, Javier MD; Canoso, Juan MD The great Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is without doubt one of the most intense and emotive artists of the twentieth century. Frida's life changed dramatically at the age of 18, when she was involved in a terrible accident. A streetcar violently impacted the bus in which she was riding. She suffered multiple bone fractures, including the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae, and had a deep abdominal wound inflicted by a metal rod. She was confined for several months in a plaster corset. From that time on, Frida suffered severe, widespread pain and profound fatigue. Generalized pain and exhaustion lingered with her for the remainder of her life ( Through the years, a variety of diagnoses were offered to explain her chronic illness, such as tuberculosis and syphilis, that were later ruled out. She received diverse types of treatments, including medications and long periods of confinement in a metal or plaster corset. In efforts to relieve her pain, she underwent several orthopedic operations on her spine, both in Mexico and in the United States, without improvement in her symptoms. Despite her debilitating illness, Frida was engaged in an active social life. She had a tempestuous marriage to the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. She traveled extensively and had relationships with the world leaders and artistic personalities of her time. Frida began painting after her accident. During periods of immobilization in a plaster corset, she used a special easel, and a mirror was attached to the canopy of her bed so that she could focus on herself. Although her painting skills were largely self-taught, she was also acquainted with the traditional schools of painting. Both in her oeuvre and in her customs, she looked back with devotion to her Mexican roots. The Surrealists claimed her as one of their own. The stillness of her self-portraits reflects the influence of her father, who was a photographer (

Kahlo, Frida key Rivera , whom she later married. Although Kahlo's work is sometimes classified as surrealist and she did exhibit several times with European surrealists, she herself disputed the label. Her preoccupation with female themes and the figurative candor with which she expressed them made her something of a feminist cult figure in the last decades of the 20th cent. One Frida is the loved Frida, dark-skinned and wearing Mexican dress, holding a picture of Diego. She is holding hands with the other Frida, who is paler and in European dress and who has a broken, exposed heart. Her torn emotions are clearly displayed on the canvas. Yet a year later she and Diego remarried. However, her pain continued as her health worsened in the 1940s. She had numerous operations (about 35), had to wear a steel corset to support her spinal column, and was frequently in the hospital. Months were spent in bed, but she continued to paint. Saturdays are also a big day but the take up ratio (.05%) is diluted by Free First Saturday (FFS) attendance. FFS is the Walker family day; we had 4,800 visitors on November 3rd, a large percentage of which were 12 and under. The 50+ crowd are the folks purchasing the tour. Teens and 20-somethings think they know it all and tend to dismiss it. I wonder how much this demographic might change if the tour was free and/or offered on personal technology.
