She painted using vibrant colors in a style that was influenced by indigenous cultures of Mexico as well as European influences that include Realism Symbolism , and Surrealism . Many of her works are self-portraits that symbolically express her own pain. Kahlo was married to and influenced by the Mexican/Spanish muralist Diego Rivera and shared his Communist views. Although she has long been recognized as an important painter, public awareness of her work has become more widespread since the 1970s. Her "Blue" house in Coyoac¡n Mexico City is a popular museum, donated by Diego Rivera after his death in 1957.

A metal rod had made a very deep abdominal wound, and her third and fourth lumbar vertebrae were fractured. Frida had received many more wounds too, and she ended up trapped in a body cast for months, as her illustration shows: The Accident, 17 September 1926 While Frida was confined to her bed, her mother brought her a small lap easel, and Frida started to paint. She had studied art before, at the National Preparatory School, where she had met Diego Rivera when he was painting the Creation mural , but Frida had never worked on paintings before. Over her bed, Frida had a mirror so she could see herself, and this was the beginning of her focus on self portraits. Self-Portrait, 1929 The Bus, 1929 Frida was a close friend of Tina Modotti, who modelled for Diego Rivera , and through her Frida and Diego met again, and fell in love. They

Introduction: Frida Kahlo, born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón, lived from July 6, 1907 to July 13, 1954. During her short lived life, she had many accomplishments. She was a surrealist artist who expressed her feelings and thoughts through her paintings. To the public she was a high spirited rebellious woman. Her paintings were full of personal content. They expressed her internal feelings. Her creative style was always breathtaking yet bewildering. Frida was probably the most idolized woman artist of her time and "today, she is a figure of legendary power whose work inspires excitement and awe throughout the world."

Frida's Life
Biography
In about 1935 she dropped the "e" in her first name. Her father one of Mexico's foremost photographers, was the son of Hungarian Jews from the German town of Baden-Baden who emigrated to Mexico. Guillermo Kahlo married her mother Matilde Calderon, a Mexican of Indian and Spanish ancestry. The family home, called the Casa Azul ("Blue House"), was built by Guillermo Kahlo a few years before Frida's birth. She was born, raised, lived and died in her family's home. Kahlo's father had a profound influence on her life. Her mother was a meticulous housekeeper and devout catholic whose conventional patterns of thought created some distance between her and her daughters. Kahlo's father, on the other hand, recognized and encouraged her intellectual independence and curiosity. It was at the National Preparatory School that she first met Diego Rivera, an artist whose work she admired. Her attraction to the painter was considerable, and one story from that period of her life alleged that she declared to her school friends her ambition to have a child by Diego Rivera. In 1925, however, Kahlo was involved in a tragic accident that dramatically changed her life. Traveling home from school on a bus, the vehicle collided with a trolley car, driving a piece of iron into her pelvis an back. Kahlo struggled with the effects of this accident and the pain it caused for the rest of her life. She underwent as many as 35 operations over the course of her life, most of them on her spine and her polio-deformed right foot.

Because I am the subject I know best."
Frida Kahlo may have felt alone, but through her paintings, she has connected with many others. In painting the subject she knows best, she depicts her own personal pain, fear, anguish, loss - as well as deifiance of all these, and even joy. The rest of us marvel at how she can depict our heartbreak, our sadness, our lonliness. It's as if the physical pain that frida was forced to endure gave her the means to depict her feelings so honestly on canvas. She created a world and invited us in, and I, for one, am greatful. About Frida Kahlo
Mexicanidad mestiza , a Mexican of mixed European and American Indian ancestry, who was to become Frida's mother. A tragic bus accident in1925 left Frida with a fractured spine, a crushed pelvis, and broken foot. She was to remain partially handicapped and in pain for the rest of her life. This life-changing event set in motion the practice of faithfully recording the painful episodes of her life through her art. Kahlo first met the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera at the Ministry of Education in Mexico City. Having just returned from Paris and enjoying a certain level of fame in his native country, Rivera was perched high on a scaffold and absorbed in the creation of his first fresco when Kahlo interrupted "el Maestro" by boldly requesting he come down from the scaffold to critique her work. Rivera graciously complied and was impressed with Kahlo's original style and mode of expression. Twenty-four years his junior, Kahlo married Diego Rivera in 1929, marking the beginning of a complex relationship defined by mutual admiration, painful separations and reconciliations. In 1942, Kahlo began teaching and her ardent followers and students were collectively known as "Fridos". She was, however, forced to abandon her teaching because of numerous painful surgeries to correct her spine and foot. Her physical suffering, coupled with the torment of her husband's waywardness became the primary subjects of her art, well documented in a lifetime's worth of emotionally charged canvases. These sad chapters of Kahlo's life were the subjects of some of her most powerful and notable works of art.

F rida Kahlo (July 7, 1907 - July 13, 1954) wrote in her diary a few days before her death: "I hope the exit is joyful, and I hope never to come back." In some ways Frida did not get her wish. It has been over 40 years since her passing, and she is back. In some ways it is like she never left. She was famous in her lifetime, as the wife of the celebrated muralist Diego Rivera and as a respected painter in her own right. Today her fame has turned into mythology and her intimate self-portraits of her personal pain and b eauty are disturbing, sensual, and always memorable. In an interesting turn about, Frida, who was so supportive of indigenous Mexican art and clothing and culture during her life has had the favor returned by contemporary folk artists who celebrate her work and life in their art. The famous Aguilar sisters of Oaxaca have been among the most significant modern day folk artists giving homage to Frida. Obviously they have used Frida's paintings as inspiration, but from that starting point they have created distinctive works of great feeling and charm. The ceramic "Frida's of the Aguilar sisters can be seen in the book "Oaxacan Ceramics" and are featured in the magnificent exhibition sponsored by Banamex of Mexico :

Her paintings are her biography.' This observation serves to explain both why her work is so different from that of her contemporaries, the Mexican Muralists, and why she has since become a feminist icon. "Kahlo was born in Mexico City in 1907, the third daughter of Guillermo and Matilda Kahlo. Her father was a photographer of Hungarian Jewish descent, who had been born in Germany; her mother was Spanish and Native American. Her life was to be a long series of physical traumas, and the first of these came early. At the age of six she was stricken with polio, which left her with a limp. In childhood, she was nevertheless a fearless tomboy, and this made Frida her father's favourite. He had advanced ideas about her education, and in 1922 she entered the Preparatoria (National Preparatory School), the most prestigious educational institution in Mexico, which had only just begun to admit girls. She was one of only thirty-five girls out of two thousand students.

Born July 6, 1907 in the town of Coyoacán in Mexico, Frida Kahlo survived many difficult events in her life, including contracting polio as a child, a long recovery from a serious car accident, two failed marriages, and several miscarriages.
She used these experiences, combined with strong Mexican and Native American cultural influences, to create highly personal paintings. Kahlo used personal symbolism mixed with Surrealism to express her suffering through her work. A viewer might classify her paintings as Surrealism or Magic Realism, but she considered her art to be realistic.
Kahlo died July 13, 1954 of pulmonary embolism.
