The exhibition will trace the unfolding relationship of four specific motifs: the target, the mechanical "device," the naming of colors, and the imprint of the body. Through specific sequences of work, it will present Johns' early period as one devoted to examining and reinventing the premises of painting during an era when painting practice was riddled with conceptual upheaval and doubt. Works for this exhibition will be drawn from private and public collections in the United States and Europe. Organization: Organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Interesting One of the great influences on Jasper Johns was the writings of Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. In Wittgenstein's work Johns recognized both a concern for logic, and a desire to investigate the times when logic breaks down. It was through painting that Johns found his own process for trying to understand logic.

Jasper Johns (American,b.1930) Ruler, Lithograph 28 x 20 in. (71.1 x 50.8 cm.) Gift of Dr. Joseph Singer HU 70.134 In 1960 Johns produced his first print; throughout that decade he would produce more than 120 prints (most of them lithographs). He was the artistic advisor for the composer John Cage and Merce Cunningham?s Dance Company until 1972. As Johns' work evolved during the 1970s and into the present, it became more expressionist and collage like, incorporating panels of color, abstract shapes, letterforms, and found objects. In 1988 he was awarded The Grand Prix at the Venice Biennale. To date Johns has produced over 400 prints in lithography, silkscreen, and intaglio. In more recent years his work has become increasingly personal, allegorical, and it often evokes memory by incorporating elements and images from his earlier works. This collection of works, produced between 1960 and the present, explores this seminal artist's commitment toward his earliest Dadaist ideas as well as an anxious but clearly present humanism. The exhibition gathers together 60 prints from the Belger's collection of over 100 in a variety of print media, including intaglio, lithography and cast lead. The prints demonstrate not just John's vision but also the working relationships he developed with printers who collaborated with him in producing one of the most significant bodies of fine art prints in the last century. The exhibition at the University of Arizona Museum of Art was curated from the Belger Collection by Peter S. Briggs and will be on exhibit from February 14 through March 28, 2004. (right: Savarin

    Falling Down on the Job
    John Haber
    in New York City
    Jasper Johns: Catenary
For years now, Jasper Johns has been falling down on the job. Hand prints break his surfaces, as if his art could mark but not cushion a fall. Measuring sticks hang from his work, held by a nail at one end, as if waiting for gravity to set the pendulum in motion. The smeared circles behind them testify to an impulsive process of creation, eradication, and destruction. Older work hints at a murky iconography of falling bodies, from divers to mountaineers. catenary , a string suspended at both ends. That motif now lends its name to an exhibition spanning several years of recent work, and Johns strings together his entire repertory. He includes painterly constructions like those that have made him the traditionalist's ideal of Pop Art or, perhaps, antidote to such a loosening of standards. He includes thinly or thickly veiled quotes from much of his career. As usual with Johns, the show offers an occasion to look and to look again, to savor that moment between recognition and comprehension. One can demand how all that falling down got started and the associations it may have accrued as it fell. The search for an answer will range from physics, mathematics, and modern poetry to painting, personal identity, and Johns's refusal to let one stand fixedly for another.
