Montclair Art Museum Montclair, NJ Montclair Art Museum Gallery Will Be Dedicated to Works by George Inness O pening on November 18th, 2001 is The Montclair Art Museum's new George Inness Gallery. A Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Martucci of Irvington-on-Hudson, New York, the gallery will be most comprehensive in the world dedicated to the work of George Inness, the renowned artist of the Hudson River School, often called the 'Father of American Landscape Painting.' Works by the visionary Inness, an artist who single-handedly transformed the depth of landscape painting during the second half of the 19th century, are one of the hallmarks of the Montclair Art Museum's Permanent Collection. Inness was a visionary artist whose renderings of nature were profoundly spiritual, a style inspired by his belief in Swedenborgianism, the philosophy of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), which embraced a theory of the connection of the spiritual and material worlds. Inness' considerable contribution to American art at the turn of the century greatly influenced 20th century art movements, and brought recognition to American artists in their own right as peers of their European counterparts. George Inness settled in Montclair, New Jersey in 1885, living and working there until his death in 1894. The town of Montclair was frequently the subject of his art, and as a nationally and internationally recognized artist during his lifetime, Inness' presence attracted other well-known artists, and helped establish the town's reputation as an intellectual community and artists' colony, one of the earliest in the country.

Description: Widely regarded as one of the greatest American landscape painters, George Inness worked professionally for fifty years, from his first appearance at the annual exhibition of the National Academy of Design in 1844 to his last in 1894. That half century saw tremendous transformations in the political, social, and cultural climate of the country, and in the art world. Art historians have always recognized that Inness's work evolved considerably alongside these broader changes. Yet, until now, the literature on his work has not recognized the full extent to which this artist pushed himself in new stylistic and technical directions. Inness himself once said, "I do not care about being a cake; I shall remain dough, subject to any impression which I am satisfied comes from the region of truth." As it turns out, the variety and malleability of his work is far greater than anyone has acknowledged. For the first time, a complete and coherent picture of Inness's career is available in this elegant collection of 1,154 of his paintings and sketches. Michael Quick, who is considered one of the two foremost George Inness authorities in the country, provides a detailed look at the artist's long career. He includes scholarly commentary on individual works, as well as Inness's stylistic and thematic development, his subjects, mediums, working method, and relationships among his paintings. The analysis considers likely motives for changes in his style, including the influence of other artists such as Asher B. Durand, Elihu Vedder, and James Whistler, as well as the less obvious impact of changes in his patronage and financial situation.

In 1845 he opened a studio in New York City, devoting himself to painting, and two years later with a friend's aid was able to go to Rome. He made a subsequent visit to Rome in 1851, and in 1854 he and his wife went to Paris. On their return they settled in Medfield, Mass. There Inness painted many of his best-known canvases. In later life he enjoyed a high reputation, maintaining studios in New York City and in Montclair, N.J., where most of his last 20 years were spent. The early work of Inness is in the manner of the

George Inness (1825-94), long considered one of America's greatest landscape painters, has yet to receive his full due from scholars and critics. A complicated artist and thinker, Inness painted stunningly beautiful, evocative views of the American countryside. Less interested in representing the details of a particular place than in rendering the "subjective mystery of nature," Inness believed that capturing the spirit or essence of a natural scene could point to a reality beyond the physical or, as Inness put it, "the reality of the unseen."
George Inness and the Science of Landscape
This lavishly illustrated work reveals Inness as profoundly invested in the science and philosophy of his time and illuminates the complex manner in which the fields of art and science intersected in nineteenth-century America. Long-awaited, this reevaluation of one of the major figures of nineteenth-century American art will prove to be a seminal text in the fields of art history and American studies.

George Inness
Inness began his career in 1841 as an apprentice in a map engraver's firm in New York City, where he worked for one year. The only formal training he received came from Regis Gignoux. Following that, Inness opened his own studio in 1845, the same year he first exhibited at the A merican A rt U nion He first exhibited at the N ational A cademy of D esign in 1844 and continued to do so for the rest of his life. He also exhibited frequently at the Brooklyn Art Association. He was elected a member of the Century Association in 1853 and resigned in 1890. Inness seems to have had an inner restlessness, for he moved frequently and made numerous trips to England, Italy, and France, where he was exposed to the Barbizon School. Following Inness's exposure to the Barbizon School, his compositions lost the tight linearity of his early work. I nness was fond of New Hampshire and kept a studio on the second floor of the North Conway Academy for several years before 1876. The last sixteen years of his life included trips to Mexico City, Cuba, Florida, the Yosemite Valley, and Europe.

GEORGE INNESS and the San Francisco art world in the 1890s - painter
Magazine Antiques Nov, 2000 by Alfred C. Harrison Jr. George Inness (Fig. 1) was a leading American landscape painter whose volatile personality caused him difficulties even as it made him seem "artistic" to observers of the American cultural scene in the late nineteenth century. [1] He was at one moment a generous supporter of his fellow artists and at an another an egotist with a patronizing attitude toward those of lesser reputation. He was intimately involved with marketing his paintings but was quick to spurn lucrative deals when the client offended him. He was arrogant in his opinions about art, but so insecure when contemplating his finished works that he often repainted themagain and again.

Executive summary: American landscape painter Daubigny and Rousseau . After his return to America he opened a studio in New York, then went to Medfield, Massachusetts, where he resided for five years. A pastoral landscape near this town inspired the characteristic painting "The Medfield Meadows." Again he went abroad and spent six years in Europe. He came back to New York in 1876, and lived there, or near there, until the year of his death, which took place at Bridge of Allan on the 3rd of August 1894 while he was travelling in Scotland. He was a National Academician, a member of the Society of American Artists, and had received many honors at home and abroad. He was married twice, his son, George Inness (b. 1854), being also a painter. Inness was emphatically a man of temperament, of moods, enthusiasms, convictions. He was fond of speculation and experiment in metaphysics and religion, as in poetry and art. Swedenborgianism, symbolism, socialism, appealed to him as they might to a mystic or an idealist. He aspired to the perfect unities, and was impatient of structural foundations. This was his attitude towards painting. He sought the sentiment, the light, air, and color of nature, but was put out by nature's forms. How to subordinate form without causing weakness was his problem, as it was

DeLue, a professor of art history Throughout his career, which stretched roughly from the mid- to late-19th century, Inness was possessed by the desire to discover techniques and strategies for making visible that which was invisible to the eye. To that end, he experimented with color, composition and paint application processes, and read and wrote extensively on topics ranging from optics and mathematics to philosophy, psychology and physiology. He also was strongly influenced by the work of Emanuel Swedenborg, a scientist and theologian whose theories were embraced by a number of 19th-century artists and writers, including Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Swedenborg was one of the most remarkable figures of the Enlightenment. He was an inventor, scientist, civil servant, philosopher, and in his own words, a “rational revelator”. He broke with the traditional teachings of the established church and focused on a new understanding of the nature of salvation similar to that of Gnosticism. As a Swedenborgian, Inness felt a responsibility to use the representation of nature to express his own spiritual concepts, unlike the Hudson River School which had attempted to erase the hand of the painter in order to render God's nature as the visible representation of God Himself. Inness declared, “ . . . the highest beauty and truest value of landscape painting are in the sentiment and feeling which flows from the mind and heart of the artist,” and made it clear that he preferred what he called a “civilized landscape”, i.e. “a landscape, where no part is left uncultivated, but all is made subservient to the pleasure and happiness of its residents.” By 1887, American critics were claiming that his work was superior to that of the French Barbizons who had originally inspired him. During the last decade of Inness's life, he was not only wealthy, but probably the most respected landscape painter in America . In 1894 he decided to make another trip to Europe . He was touring Scotland when he suddenly and rather mysteriously died. Despite the distance, his body was brought back to America where it lay in state at the National Academy of Design, only the third artist to be so honored. In 1905, critic Arthur Hoeber called him “not only the greatest landscape painter that America has produced, but . . . one of the greatest artists of the modern world, fit to rank with the best of all nations.” Today, Inness retains his place alongside the other great masters of landscape to celebrate our enduring fascination with the world of nature.

The Inness Family Crest
The Celtic name for the Innes (or Inness) family is Mac Aonghuis (son of Angus) and the Clan Motto is "Be Faithful." The ancestral home of the Innes(s) Clan is Moray, in the Highlands of Scotland, which covers the lands from Spey to Lossie along the North Sea coast. This is Malt Whiskey country, where the vast majority of Scotch distillaries are located. Innes means 'greens', and refers to the wide plain of grass that stretched between the tall white mansion of Innes (built by Sir Robert in 1646) and the River Lossie.

As a result of this, the Innes Clan claims descent from the original Moravians. Berowald's grandson
