English painter, one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. His paintings, characterized both by a meticulous attention to detail and a clear moral and religious symbolism, include The Awakening Conscience The Light of the World Hunt's works are both intensely realistic and symbolic. The Shadow of Death , for example, a minutely detail depiction of a biblical carpenter's workshop, shows a shadow of the Crucifixion cast on the workshop wall by the stretched arms of Jesus. Obsessed with exact historical and archaeological detail, particularly for his religious works, Hunt visited Palestine and Syria in 1854, producing The Scapegoat The Finding of Our Saviour in the Temple He also painted scenes of contemporary life, including

Biography of William Holman Hunt
William Holman Hunt was a British painter. In 1843, while attending lectures at the Royal Academy Schools, he met Sir John Everett Millais, who together with Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. They sought to revitalize art by emphasizing the detailed observation of the natural world in a spirit of quasi-religious devotion to truth. Although the Pre-Raphaelites broke up in 1852, Hunt remained loyal to that style until his death in 1910.

William Holman Hunt
I didn't expect to be able to do any serious blogging on this whirlwind journey beyond an erratic bit of travelogue. But the unexpected boon of constant internet access has enabled me to putter around a bit on the web, and I have discovered an article that I am eager to share.
William Holman Hunt was a well-known member of the Brotherhood, but is of particular interest because of his faith. A faith powerfully expressed in his painting Light of the World. A painting of Christ, lantern in hand, knocking at the door of the human heart, it was a painting that drew the admiration and love of Hunt's own time, and has retained its meaningful beauty for the present. Christianity Today has a recent article having to do with that particular work and several books recently published on Hunt's life and art. You can go here to read it. You can also go here for a short history of the Brotherhood, and here for a list of the museums and websites housing his works and offering prints of his paintings.
Even in the midst of my crazy travel days, I have been strengthened in heart by stumbling across this study on the life of a man who so valued beauty and was so committed to bringing the rich mystery of the Biblical story to life in his art. It's what I want to do in my writing. It's what I want to do in my life. So enjoy this artist. May he enrich your days as well.

Hunt: The Lady of Shalott
"She left the web, she left the loom,
She made three paces through the room,
She saw the water-lily bloom,
She saw the helmet and the plume,
She look'd down to Camelot.
Out flew the web and floated wide;
The mirror crack'd from side to side;
'The curse is come upon me,' cried
The Lady of Shalott." Alfred, Lord Tennyson, The Lady of Shalott
The painting by William Holman Hunt (1827-1910) has a complicated and elaborate symbolism. The Lady of Shalott is herself an artist and may reflect Hunt's own aesthetic on the consequences of turning away from duty and yielding to the temptations of the world rather than being removed from its material realities. The lady's magnificent hair, blown by a stormy wind, frightens away the doves of peace that had settled next to her as she worked, the weaving ruined, as is her own life. The silver lamp on the right has owls decorating the top and sphinxes at the bottom to suggest wisdom triumphing over mystery, its light extinguished now that the she has succumbed to temptation. Hercules, who is portayed to the right of the mirror is given a halo to signify him as a type of Christ, his victory over the serpent guarding the apples in the garden of the Hesperides the pagan counterpart to Christ's victory over sin. To the left of the mirror, the Virgin Mary prays over the Christ child, her humilty and the valor of Hercules both exemplars of duty and foils to the Lady of Shalott, who personifies its dereliction, as signified by her wild hair and unraveling yarn.

The Light of the World
"The Light of the World" by William Holman Hunt
The Light of the World Buy From Art.com from an article by George Dawson MA c.1887 I regard "The Light of the World" as the finest picture ever painted by an Englishman. It is really a painted text, a sermon on canvas. Such a picture explains the true uses which art had in the middle ages. With many people, nowadays, paintings are only the last touch of ornament given to their houses; but in the middle ages the painter occupied the place preachers would occupy now. When people read little, and were preached to little, the great artists were the great preachers of the world. Anybody could understand a painting but few could read books. In those times, art was held in high honour. Painters were then great servants of the Church. In "The Light of the World" the allegory chosen for illustration is that beautiful one in the Revelation, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me". The picture is not, in the strict sense of the word, a pre-Raphaelite picture, though painted by a chief teacher of the school. The whole is emblematic, and upon the understanding of the emblems used, depends one's appreciation of the success with which the painter has fulfilled his task. On the head of Christ are two crowns: the earthly crown of his shame as well as his heavenly crown of glory. And the artist has made the thorny crown begin to bud and blossom, thereby symbolising that the crown which was thorny to Christ, put upon his head and spiritually used by him, did begin to blossom; and showing, also, that there is no thorn but God can make blossom.

Identity:
William Holman Hunt was an English painter. He married Fanny Waugh in 1865 but she died in December 1866. In 1875 he married his sister-in-law Edith Waugh. The marriage took place in Switzerland as it was illegal in Britain.
Life:
Hunt was an original member of the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood. Inspired by religious zeal and a desire to be historically accurate in the settings of his Biblical paintings, he visited the Holy Land in 1854 and again in 1875. In 1872 Whistler was awarded a commission by Sir Henry Cole to provide two mosiacs for the South Kensington Museum. However, Whistler's designs were never completed. Hunt too was invited to participate but failed to produce anything. Hunt wrote to Whistler in March 1885 with his apologies for his wife and himself having missed the delivery of his Ten O'Clock Lecture for the University Fine Arts Society at the Theatre Royal in Cambridge for which Whistler had sent him an invitation. However, Hunt's moralistic and religious approach to art was completely opposed to the art for art's sake ethos of Whistler. In 1890 Whistler wrote that great people bought the works of Canaletto not those of men like Hunt. In May 1891 William Ernest Henley wrote that he hoped Whistler would enjoy his attack on Hunt.

William Holman Hunt One of the seven members of the original PRB , Hunt was soon persuaded apparently by his own painting, 'The Light of the world' to specialize in religious themes. In this case Ruskinian 'truth to nature' meant painting in the Holy Land, and Hunt's subsequent life revolved around three journeys to the Middle East.
During these peregrinations his first love (the model Annie Miller) went astray, his first wife (Fanny Waugh) died, and he married her sister Edith (although this would have been illegal in England at the time). His pictures filled a need for 'icons' in Victorian religion, and Hunt was eventually awarded the Order of Merit. However he could not forget the hostility that he and the other PRB members had originally faced from the art establishment, and he never became a member of the RA.
There is a serious website devoted to Hunt, called with what we hope is irony The Light of the World ; it includes reproductions of the majority of his works. However, right now (2003) it seems to be down most of the time. Works by Hunt at

In all of his works, many of which are biblical scenes, he strove for Pre-Raphaelite goals of serious moral content, direct study from nature, and historical authenticity. His paintings—of which perhaps the two best known are Finding of Christ in the Temple (1854, City Museum, Birmingham, England) and Scapegoat (1854, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, England)—are minutely detailed and painted in a style characterized by crowded composition and bright, relatively crude colors.
