Edward Hopper
The major Twentieth Century American Realist painter Edward Hopper was born in Nyack, New York in 1882. After completing six years of study at the New York School of Art in 1906, he took a number of extended trips to Paris to paint.
Earning his living as a commercial artist in New York during his twenties and thirties, he continued to paint and exhibit his work; "Sailing", for example, was included in the Armory Show of 1913.
That same year he moved to the Greenwich Village quarters he would occupy for the rest of his life, and soon thereafter began a longtime tradition of summering on the New England coast. In 1924, when he was forty-two, every painting in his one-man show at a New York gallery was sold, and his reputation as an overnight success was firmly established. Hopper now devoted himself entirely to his art, but he was distrustful of popularity and worked slowly and methodically, completing one or two paintings a year until his death in 1967.
His work is distinguished by his enigmatic yet precise representation of the solitude inherent in urban landscapes and interiors, human relationships, the open road, and the expansive sea.

Josephine N. Hopper Bequest. Statue at Park Entrance is an impressionistic scene of swirling brushstrokes and dramatic darks and lights. The figures are mere daubs of paint to balance out the composition; but his familiar and apparently innate sense of isolation and hispreference for an urban scene devoid of people is found even in his early work. This scene shows a masterful sense of abstraction and the fluid modeling that would become much more refined as his style progressed. Backyards, Greenwich Village

Celebrating great art in humble places: the glorious talents of the artists who illustrated stories, advertisements and comics in the 20th century.

EDWARD HOPPER'S VERSION OF THE INTERNET
Edward Hopper loved to ride the elevated train through the city at night. As the apartment buildings raced by in the dark, he would catch flashes of unearned intimacy: lonely people staring at the walls... desperate couples... people whose privacy was protected only by their anonymity.
Sometimes I think that artists, like philosophers, are keyhole peepers at heart. They are observers, once-removed from the primacy of experience by the burden of consciousness.
If Hopper lived today, he might get the same glimpses of humanity from Google. He could access an endless supply of private moments, intimate photographs, agonizing diary entries and personal confessions, efficiently organized and served up with the speed of an electrical pulse. He could download and catalogue them without ever leaving his chair.
But art calls for a little less information and a little more rumination. Or, as Carl Sandburg said, poetry is "the opening and closing of a door, leaving those who look through to guess about what is seen during that moment." Hopper's fleeting views from the train left him plenty of time afterward for slow meditation.

The Whitney Museum is home to the largest collection of the work of Edward Hopper in the world. This year, as part of this museum's 75th Anniversary celebration entitled Full House: Views of the Whitney's Collection at 75 , the entire fifth floor of the museum is dedicated to his art in a six month installation called Holiday in Reality: Edward Hopper which remains on view from June 29 through December 3, 2006.
Edward Hopper (1882–1967) needs no introduction to us. His images are iconic and deeply embedded in our contemporary culture. Indeed, probably his most familiar work

The Hopper House had been built in 1858 by the boy's maternal grandfather. Edward's father, Garrett Hopper, moved into the house after marrying the owner's daughter Elizabeth in 1878. Both Edward and his sister Marion were born in the house - she in 1880 and he in 1882. Marion lived in the house, unmarried, until her death in 1965. Although Edward left Nyack in 1910 to live in Manhattan, he held title to the house until he died in 1967. No other family has owned it.

    EDWARD HOPPER:
    CUBIST IN DISGUISE?
    by Donald Kuspit
"Edward Hopper," June 7-Dec. 3, 2006, at the Whitney Museum of American Art, 945 Madison Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10028. There’s been much talk about the moody silences of Hopper’s spaces and the oddly disturbed figures around or in them they seem to be living the lives of quiet desperation of which Thoreau spoke. But I suggest that the people are distractions from Hopper’s real concern: buildings. They abound in Hopper’s works, often dwarfing the figures into insignificance Night Shadows (1921) is a characteristic example or using them as foils to offset structure and space. Buildings are man-made constructions of geometrical space, and as such inherently abstract and autonomous. They have a charismatic quality of their own, independently of the people who use them. Hopper is a kind of Cubist, treating buildings as abstract structures with a life of their own, and often more uncannily alive than the people who use them. Cubism was in part inspired by Cézanne’s "little cubes," as Picasso called the buildings that spotted Cézanne’s late landscapes. They are the point of departure for the cunning geometry of the buildings in Picasso’s early Analytic Cubist masterpieces, for example
