I have a friend who was so jazzed up about seeing SUNSHINE that he proposed a roadtrip into Mexico, where it just opened last weekend. I’m interested in Danny Boyle’s new film, but I don’t really want to brave kidnapping and dysentery to see it, so I had to say no. In the meantime, one of our Mexican readers sent us a pair of reviews for two other films that already opened there but that won’t be out here in the US for a while. He set aside his paint brushes and his storytelling just long enough to put together this double-feature review: Hi, guys. Down here, south of the border, I just caught a couple of movies that have not yet been properly released on the states so I thought I’d give you a ridiculously early peek at Rowan Atkinson's new Mr. Bean movie (the American release is scheduled for August 31st) and Aragorn's Spanish epic Alatriste. There are quite a few spoilers scattered throughout but I really doubt this is the kind of material to ejaculate over one way or another. I think I got a little carried away so feel free to chop down at will and use whatever you may find of use.

Henry Bruce Henry was classically trained, but heeded the siren call of improvisation. Listen to Bruce Henry's "Afro Blue" I've heard him several times since, and his most recent CD, "Connections" (2003), is a permanent part of my playlist. Early influences Born in West Point, Miss., home of Howling Wolf, Henry grew up in Chicago and was singing publicly by age 5 in his family's Baptist church. His pianist father surrounded him with the music of Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Henry was classically trained, but the siren call of improvisation (Nina Simone, Al Jarreau, John Coltrane) won out. Today he maintains a busy schedule of performing here and abroad, teaching (privately and at the FAIR magnet school in Crystal), and leading his ensemble Freedom Train, a performance group with a 15-voice choir, five-person dance troupe, seven-piece band, and a spoken word component with a mission of sharing African American music and history with all people. He also serves as music director for the Bridge worship service at 11 a.m. each Sunday at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Minneapolis. Henry brings a rare and not-to-be-missed holiday show to the Dakota on Thursday, Dec. 20. His band will include Jason Craft on piano, Gary Raynor on bass, Daryl Boudreaux on percussion, and Wendell Henry (no relation) on drums. I talked with him about what to expect and more.

"DOC" HOLLIDAY Dr. John Henry "Doc" Holliday "He was the most skillful gambler, and the nerviest, fastest, deadliest man with a six-gun I ever saw." This was the tribute paid to Doc Holliday by Wyatt Earp , who was something of a tough character himself. Biography On August 14, 1851 in Griffin, Georgia, John Henry Holliday was born to Henry Burroughs and Alice Jane Holliday. Their first child, Martha Eleanora, had died on June 12, 1850 at six months of age. When he married Alice Jane McKay on January 8, 1849, Henry Burroughs was a pharmacist by trade and, later, became a wealthy planter, lawyer, and during the War between the States, a Confederate Major. Church records state: "John Henry, infant son of Henry B. and Alice J. Holliday, received the ordinance of baptism on Sunday, March 21, 1852, at the First Presbyterian Church in Griffin." Alice Jane died on September 16, 1866. This was a terrible blow to young John Henry for he and his mother were very close. To compound this loss, his father married Rachel Martin only three months later on December 18, 1866. Shortly after this marriage, the Holliday family moved to Valdosta, Georgia. Major Holliday quickly became one of the town's leading citizens, becoming Mayor, the Secretary of the County Agricultural Society, a Member of the Masonic Lodge, the Secretary of the Confederate Veterans Camp, and the Superintendent of local elections. Because of his family status, John Henry had to choose some sort of profession and he chose dentistry. He enrolled in dental school in 1870 and attended his first lecture session in 1870-1872. Each lecture session lasted a little over three months. John wrote his required thesis on "Disease of the Teeth". He served his required two years apprenticeship under Dr. L.F. Frank. On March 1, 1872, the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery in Philadelphia, conferred the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery upon twenty-six men, one of whom was John Henry Holliday. Upon completion of his training and graduation, Dr. Holliday opened an office with a Dr. Arthur C. Ford in Atlanta in 1872. The Atlanta Constitution on July 26, 1872, ran the following item:
